Armistice Day Plans In Dillon and Beaverhead County

The National War Fund drive starts Monday in Beaverhead County with Mrs. W. H. Stephan as Dillon director and Margaret Sweeney coordinating rural areas. Beaverhead’s quota is 5000 dollars. The USO and 18 relief agencies benefit, preventing multiple drives. Armistice observance in Dillon on November 11 includes a football game between Beaverhead High and Park County High, a parade, and the Legion open house at the Metlen hotel followed by a dance.

Bud Porter Dies After Brief Illness In Dillon

Richard E. Bud Porter, 43, a Dillon native and longtime Beaverhead County ranch worker and rodeo performer, died yesterday at St. James hospital in Butte after about a week of illness. Born September 19, 1900, he spent his life in the area and leaves a son Jack R. Porter, daughter Dora May Melton, his parents, and a sister Rose Westergard. Funeral Friday at 2 pm from Brundage chapel with Rev. Lewis Smith officiating. interment at Mountain View cemetery. pallbearers listed.

Native of Dillon Passes Saturday in Michigan City

John Edie a well known Dillon man died last Saturday in Kalamazoo Michigan after a brief illness. He was born in Dillon in May 1898. Surviving is a niece Margaret Edie Relling of Spokane. Body being shipped to Dillon for funeral arrangements on arrival.

Bayers Hereford Sale at Butte Is a Distinct Success

The annual Bayers Hereford sale in Butte drew a large crowd of breeders from across the country. C Bayers of Twin Bridges declared the event a success as 61 bulls averaged 386 dollars with a top price of 1529 dollars. 40 heifers averaged 200 dollars with top pen at 270 dollars. 101 registered Herefords sold over two and a half hours.

Dillon Elks set special meeting for district visit

Dillon lodge No. 1554 B P O E will hold a regular meeting at the Odd Fellows hall tonight to discuss a special session Friday November 5. Harvest of Beaverhead Potato Crop Finished

Beaverhead’s potato harvest ends after 23 days yielding 75 000 bushels from 130 acres at the Irvine & Cottom plant. A hailstorm in August trimmed the yield slightly but quality remains high and demand strong nationwide. Sorting starts November with shipping to follow late November or early December. Christmas Seal Sale To Be Held Here In November

The thirty seventh annual Christmas Seal sale begins in November to ensure stamps arrive with Christmas cards. Originating in 1907 by Miss Emily Bissell, the sale was nationalized in 1908 by the American Red Cross and later overseen by the National Tuberculosis Association. In Dillon, the Shakespeare club sponsors the local drive.

Bird Refuge at Red Rock Is Discussed

Dr Ward M Sharp of the Red Rock Wild Life Refuge spoke at the Dillon Rotary dinner detailing the refuge aims to protect migratory birds and spotlightting the trumpeter swan. He noted about 221 trumpeter swans exist worldwide with around 100 at Red Rock lakes and wintering in open water poses challenges for the species. The talk also covered wildlife in the Red Rock lakes area and the refuge income from day and summer grazing.

Halloween Parties Planned for City School Children

Plans are complete for Halloween parties for city school children this Saturday night. Mrs. Glen Lyon leads the effort with help from the Dillon police and fire departments. Joseph Achten Fatally Injured In Runaway Team Incident

Joseph Achten, employee at the Antone Buyan ranch, was fatally injured Thursday when the horse he was driving bolted after being frightened by a car. He died several days later from head and chest injuries. Funeral services were held Monday at St Patrick's church in Butte and the body shipped to Miles City. Pallbearers included Bill Buyan and Norman Grant.

Local WAC Enlistments Handled by Mrs Gilbert

War Council to present program with Navy recruiters

The Montana War Council and the Navy recruit in service will jointly present a program in Dillon on Wednesday, November 17. Sheriff John Troupe announces the county defense council's event with Eugene W. Savage in charge and a Navy recruiter aide. Motion pictures from the war fronts will be shown at both the high school afternoon session for students and a public evening gathering. New Ration Book Registration Opens in Beaverhead County

Dillon Fire Department Sets Longest Run for Armstead Blaze

Dillon volunteer firemen responded to a major Armstead fire that destroyed a Roselle tourist cabin. Armstead volunteers formed a bucket brigade and slowed the spread before Dillon firefighters arrived to finish the blaze. The cabin housed tourists. two occupants were hunting nearby when the fire broke out. The origin remains unknown.

Dillon Sailor Selway Recovering After Med Sea Action

Chief Petty Officer Charles Selway, son of Mr and Mrs Ro Selway of Dillon, is reported to be recovering from wounds received in action in the Mediterranean. He is a patient in a Boston hospital. It is believed the ship he was serving on was sunk a month ago, marking the fourth time since the war began that he has been a member of a crew on a ship sunk. He has served in the Navy five years.
