Beaverhead County candidates press their final appeals ahead of the November 8 election. County Democrats chair Bruce Risley and Republicans chair Sam Ditty predict close races as candidates try to reach every voter, hampered by a heavy mid October snowstorm and many requests for absent ballots.
The Dillon Rotary Club held a regular Monday session with wives present. Dr. Curtis Wilson of Butte, Mines faculty, spoke on community service emphasizing daily opportunities to help locally. He praised Rotary ideals and stated lasting tribute is gratitude from fellow citizens.
Dillon Elks map elaborate plans for the district deputy James T. Finlen Jr of Butte visiting next Saturday. A postponed regular meeting, an initiation ceremony, a 7:30 parade by the drum and bugle corps, a free bingo for ladies, and a Halloween dance follow in Dart's hall with paid membership for admission.
Dillon residents hear of a plan to create a city park and playground. Under Mrs H M Warner the local council surveys churches and civic groups while Mayor Galt forms a special committee to gauge community support. A summer recreation camp inspired the permanent park proposal.
Mrs Frank Blair a Bea verhead county matron died Monday at Barrett hospital after a four week illness pneumonia fatal. She was 60 born September 1 1878 in Illinois and lived in Dillon Horse Prairie and other Beaverhead county areas. Survived by husband and a son Ludwig Carlisle of Butte and sister Elsa Buckman Arlington Va. Funeral held this afternoon Brundage chapel Rev Paris Wells Presbyterian officiating interment Mountain View cemetery.
Gustave K. Rody and Joseph Sawyer of Centennial Valley ranchers completed final proofs on their homestead entries Monday in the clerk of the court’s office.
Mt Moriah lodge invites Dillon members for past masters night in Butte with a 5 30 pm Dillon departure and 7 30 pm banquet. Seven new members joined the women’s athletic association including Florence McBain Rosanna Miller and Maxine Cline. Ted Lavine of Dillon chaired a Gargoyle club officer election.
The Dillon Business and Professional Women's club presents The Circus at the Normal college auditorium on November 4 and 5. Miss Helen Raynor of Boston directs about 100 local business and professional people in the production to raise funds for Mountain View cemetery improvements. First rehearsal held tonight with committee chairmen.
A Civilian Conservation Corps company of 190 youths arrived at Birch Creek last Friday from the Many Glaciers camp in Glacier National Park. The Missouri Arkansas and Nebraska group, under Lt. James Coleman, joined a small earlier arrival. The camp will host winter projects and an educational course planned for the season.
Beaverhead chapter Daughters of the American Revolution will meet Tuesday afternoon November 1 at 3 o'clock at the home of Mrs. E L Poindexter Miss Jean Bishop will read a paper on The History of the Indian Tribes of Montana Prior to 1850 Mrs W B Wiley regent will preside
Montana educators from the Normal college join the Montana Education Association events in Bozeman Kalispell Great Falls Wolf Point and Billings. Miss Jessie L Duboc presents Correlation of Intermediate Grade Subjects in the intermediate section. Dr Marin K Farmer presents Objectives of the Social Science Curriculum in the junior high school section.
Juries will hear the murder case of William Heaston Sr on November 9 as the fall term opens. Judge Henry G. Rodgers set the calendar. Heaston is charged with killing Joseph W. Potts of Wise River. J E Kelly prosecutes, T E Gilbert defends. Civil cases listed include Rawleigh vs Wenger and Baril cases.
Charles Green pleaded guilty to forgery in justice court before Judge Louis Stahl and was bound over to district court for sentence under a $1,000 bond. He was arrested by Deputy Sheriff Dellar Gordon after allegedly cashing fictitious checks signed by Martha Wilson at the Metlen hotel and Vaughn Ragsdale.
Lima Republican Central Committee cancels a planned rally after residents warned of smallpox in the area. Chairman Sam Ditty cited health risks and urged candidates to attend a community dance the following Saturday in Lima.
Ruth Ann Dart of Dillon was elected grand warden by the grand assembly of Rebekahs in Helena. She has served as grand treasurer and is a former noble grand of Diana Rebekah lodge. Mrs Stanley Wright attended as official delegate. Local members and husbands attended a card party at the I.O.C.F. hall after the meeting.
Beaverhead county high school has chosen three candidates from each class for the annual carnival queen. Seniors nominees are Ruth Jackson Evelyn Nissen and Eleanore Thompson. juniors Jo Ann Deputy Maxine Wiant and Pat Peterson. sophomores Evelyn Meine Ethel Mary Forrester and Betty Lee Harrison. freshmen Daryl Bennett Annabelle George and Adele Pierce. Last year's queen Dorothy Ann Gosman withdrew along with Irma Jackson and Catherine Jackson.
In Helena the Montana Highway finance committee states virtually all residents favor Initiative 41 and expect it to pass at the November election. The measure would allow the state highway commission to issue 3 million dollars in debentures to match federal grants with no new tax, repaid over 10 years from the gasoline tax.
Joe Metlen of Beaverhead County and Guy Stambaugh of Montana woolgrowers attended a western district rate hearing in Salt Lake City. The conference sought to separate fat livestock from stocker and feeder stock for railroad rate purposes, with two witnesses from each western state.
Dillon lodge No. 513 entertained about 75 members of the Treasury State Legion of the Order at a frolic at the I.O.O.F. hall Saturday night. Delegations came from Butte Anaconda Deer Lodge Philipsburg and Helena plus guests from other lodges. Great North Moose L. H. Wind of Anaconda presided at a business session before dancing and refreshments. Local committee members were Joe Fuller Ernest Knapp Jack Keith Jack O'Donnell and Orin Pilon.
Six Beaverhead County High School musicians travel to Billings to join an all state orchestra of 120 players for two Montana Education Association district meetings concerts. The group includes Elizabeth Wilkin son Joe Taylor June Patrick Billy Bonnifield Peggy Quacken bush and Ruth Jackson. They will be joined by Mrs. Sam Wilkinson and Mrs. Charles Bonnifield for transportation and support.
Cornelius J. Hovren a Dillon businessman and Beaverhead post American Legion commander, with L Donovan, had a narrow escape when their duck-hunting canoe struck a log and overturned on the Beaverhead river Sunday afternoon. They lost both shotguns and the canoe was damaged. Donovan clung to willows and reached safety minutes later.
