Dillon volunteer fire department leads fire prevention week with a kickoff fire drill at city hall and inspections to reduce hazards. Chief O T Vandegrift notes historically low fire losses though two recent small blazes occurred, one at the Fred Crouse home causing about 200 dollars in damage and another chicken house fire behind the Hazelbaker building causing minor damage with no poultry present.

Young man sentenced for horse theft from Forsyth ranch
Robert Nash, 19, was sentenced to two years in state prison by Judge Henry G. Rodgers after pleading guilty to stealing a horse from the Andy Forsyth ranch in Centennial. Nash, arrested in Tooele Utah, guided an eight mile timber trip with Sheriff Paul H. Temple to recover the dead horse, which Nash said he abandoned after fearing pursuit.

Dillon to Host 1940 P T A Convention
Dillon has been chosen as the site for the 1940 biennial convention of the Parent Teachers associations of Montana. The Bozeman state meeting last week selected Dillon and officers said plans will start immediately. Delegates from Dillon included Mrs. L. M. Holloran and four others. The convention backed opposition to referendum 40 and supported initiative 41 for highway debenture bonds, opposed a national lottery, and endorsed permanent federal aid to schools.

Hunters Urge Red Rock Lakes Open To Duck Hunting
Hunters statewide back Beaverhead Sportsmen's Association in pushing to open Red Rock lakes to migratory waterfowl during open season. The U S Bureau of Biological Survey has designated part of the lakes as a refuge, a move the group contests as against local and state sportsmen interests. President Jack Keenan led a telegram to Senators Wheeler and Murray and Representative O Connell requesting intercession with Dr. Ivan N. Gabrielson to reconsider the refuge designation.

Man Held After Lima Beer Parlor Shooting Affray
J. F. Maynard is jailed in Beaverhead County on charges tied to a Lima area shooting affray at a beer parlor Saturday night. He allegedly fired four shots at Phil Lyons, owner, one grazing Lyons' head after an earlier disturbance. Lyons subdued him with a bottle before Maynard returned with a rifle and fired again.
