Rotary and Lions Club Joint Meeting Highlights

The mother of joint meetings was held Thursday night with Rotary and Lions clubs in attendance. Several speakers addressed the gathering sharing community updates and activities for the upcoming period.

Dinner hosts and federation officers elected at Wisdom events

About 30 Dillon men and as many from the Big Hole basin attended a joint dinner and meeting in Wisdom where Dr. W H Stephan presided. The Beaverhead Federation of Women's Organizations met there with officers elected including Mrs W K Harvey Melrose president and Mrs H D Black Dillon secretary, and sessions featured programs on county nursing and future federation work.

Husband of Local Girl Dies in Plane Crash

Lieutenant J. A. Barnes husband of former Miss Ruth Johnson of this city was killed in a Brooksfield San Antonio Texas plane crash last Thursday morning. A Montana youth 22 native of Fort Benton and a Montana State University Missoula graduate he had become an aviation instructor in government service. The body went to Fort Benton by plane for interment. They married two months ago after meeting as students at the state university and had lived in San Antonio since marriage.

Boston Montana Directors Face Legal Action In Equity Suit

Funeral services were held for Thomas Guilfoyle a prominent Dilton rancher after his death of likely heart failure. The Massachusetts suit by William L Baker and Charles S Cummings targets 14 Boston Montana Mines directors for alleged neglect and mismanagement affecting the 4400 share stock company owner of the Elkhorn mine with W R Allen among the defendants.

Enry Hackett longtime Beaverhead resident dies

ENRY HACKETT former Dillon police officer and longtime Beaverhead county resident died at the county farm after a lingering illness. He came to Dillon in 1880 after arriving from Nebraska at age 19 in 1878 and later gained fame in 1884 for a rafting journey down the Missouri river with a companion. He spent years working around local prospecting camps in the Little Rockies.

Victim Madison County Shooting Dies Here Yesterday

Andrew Ziegler, 69, died at Barrett hospital after being shot at his Madison county ranch on Oct 10. His brother Ambrose Ziegler, 65, is jailed on first degree assault charges and may face murder charges now that the victim has died. Authorities seek to identify the bullets and determine the crime’s motive amid reports of drinking and a barn confrontation.

Legion Dance to Benefit Boy Scouts at City Hall

Hunters Out In Force As Season Opens

Sportsmen in Dillon and Beaverhead county areas flocked to the mountains of Beaverhead and Madison counties as the big game season opened Saturday. Many, including Dillon hunters, traveled to upper Madison country near Yellowstone Park hoping for their first elk trophy.

Elks Plan October 29 Dance at City Hall

Dillon Elks, at their last meeting, approved a dance set for Saturday night October 29 in the city hall auditorium. The event is invitational and expected to be a fall highlight. The lodge also schedules a special session Tuesday night November 8 to receive election returns, with public invited after the regular meeting. All Elks lodges nationwide hold meetings that night.

Hecla Miner Dies in Smoke Fumes at Hecla Shaft

Lex McDonnell aged 66 was found dead in a Hecla mine shaft likely from smoke swept in by a lamp fire at the entrance. Heja, a Nova Scotian native who first worked at Hecla in 1888, leaves a widow and eight children after a career spanning Spokane and Canada before returning to mining. The body was taken to Dillon on Sunday.

Red Cross Roll Call Continues in Beaverhead County

EAVERHEAD county residents are urged to renew memberships in the Red Cross as soon as possible. Chairman E W Bond reports the first week failed to reach the 660 quota. Modern Woodmen Plan Year’s Work At Dillon Camp

The Dillon camp of Modern Woodmen of America met Wednesday night at the Odd Fellows hall to map plans for winter activities. An entertainment committee of Ned Calhoon, Manetho Brown and John Coppin was appointed. A class will start at the regular meeting on November 9. District Deputy Earl Roe attended. John Coppin was named sentry and Louis Stahl trustee to fill unexpired terms.
