Deer Season Opens Soon in Beaverhead County

The Beaverhead County big game season begins Saturday October 15 and runs 30 days. Hunters plan opening trips around Yellowstone park for elk while many stay closer to home. Snow last week improves conditions over last year and deer harvests were lower, suggesting a robust game population this season. Hunters must observe tag requirements.

Madison Forest Fire Held To 28 Acres In Beaverhead Reserve

A man caused fire in the Madison Reserve near Hutchins burned about 28 acres before a 12 man crew contained it. It was the tenth man caused blaze in the Beaverhead forest this year, with only one natural fire. The season’s largest local fire reached 75 acres in the Madison district last month.

Rancher Guilfoyle Found Dead On Dillon Ranch

John Thomas Guilfoyle a Dillon rancher born August 12 1871 in Fulton Kansas was found dead this morning on his ranch west of the county fair grounds. He had been stricken while tending irrigation ditches and a search by neighbors followed his absence from home. A resident since 1901 he had owned the river road ranch for a decade and is survived by Kansas relatives including cousin Martin Quigley of Wisdom. Funeral arrangements are pending.

Dillon Elk Lodge No 240 attended a reception in Butte honoring Grand Exalted Ruler Floyd Thompson of Moline Illinois. University units face budget cuts under plan

Greater University of Montana executive council settled on a maximum annual budget of 1 050 000 for all units for the coming biennium starting July 1. Chancellor Brannon will present figures to the state board of education on October 22 in Butte before sending them to the legislature.

Mysterious Ranch House Shooting Leaves Rancher Wounded

Geer shoots three times at the Ziegler ranch on the Madison county side of the Big Hole river near Glen. Andy Ziegler lies near death at Barrett hospital after four shots hit him including the abdomen chest and wrist. Ambrose Ziegler unharnessed a team as the shooting occurred. a .38 revolver and a bullet hole were found at the scene.

State Normal Bulldogs Fall to Montana State College Reserves

Montana State College reserves defeated State Normal 32 to 0 on a muddy field. The Bulldogs showed flashes of defense but struggled offensively. Key linemen Callahan Kerr Anderson and Thompson starred on defense, while Leslie Booth suffered a shoulder bruise. Next home game vs School of Mines on October 21.

Dillon Rotarians to Attend Big Hole Lions Joint Meeting

Dillon Rotary club members will travel to Jackson tomorrow night to join the Big Hole Basin Lions Club for another joint meeting. A banquet will be served and talks will be given by members of both clubs. County Commissioner Martin Jackson, president of the Big Hole club, extended the invitation.

Tom DuBois of Dillon has been named Montana field representative of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation based in Helena. His duties include inspecting rancher loan applications and, upon approval, releasing funds within three days as red tape has been removed.

Red Cross Roll Call Opens in Beaverhead County Campaign

The nation's annual Red Cross drive runs this week with Beaverhead County active. Dillon conducts a house to house canvass and booths at the post office and local banks. Grand Master Visits Dillon Lodge of Masons
