Montana Normal Bulldogs prepare to host Carroll College of Helena this Friday at Vigilante field with an 8 p.m. kickoff. The team opened with a 12-7 win over Idaho State Junior varsity, but dropped their conference opener 19-6 at Millings to Eastern Montana Normal. Jack Milligan starred for Eastern with multiple runs, while Dillon's Smith scored late on a counter from the Eastern 10.

Prize steer boards Warren on the Big Hole trip
Gov Earl Warren, Republican vice presidential candidate, receives a 10 inch high clay prize steer from the Big Hole Basin and two large steaks. The steer was sculpted by Mrs Christ Sperle of Jackson and presented by Dell A Lloyd of Wisdom after Warren's Fox Theater address. Pendleton of the Big Hole basin owned the brand and paid 260 dollars to Beaverhead Republican central committee. Warren traveling on Governor Warren's special train will accompany the Republican candidate.

Hero of South Pacific comes home to rest
First Lt. Walter F. Shaffner a Beaverhead native killed Oct. 1 1944 in the South Pacific was laid to rest Tuesday with full military honors at Mountain View cemetery. Services at Brundage chapel followed by graveside rites conducted by Beaverhead post of the Legion. Shaffner survived by parents and three brothers.

Body of Sgt Barlow Being Shipped Home
The body of Sgt James Barlow who died in Germany on March 17 1945 is en route to the United States aboard the Carroll Victory. Arrival date at Dillon not announced. He was wounded in France on Armistice Day 1944 and returned to duty before later hospitalization. Born July 13 1925 in Fremont Nebraska, he moved to Dillon as a boy and attended Beaverhead County High School before enlisting October 15 1943. Survived by his mother Mrs William Miller and sisters Mrs James Hier Vallejo California Mrs Roland Rodgers San Diego and Mrs Ray Kinkenon of Fremont.

Hunters report ducks plentiful early but rising high in Montana during the opening lap of the season. Local shooters brought home enough for meals and some limits. Rodeo Association Declares Dividend for 1948 Show
At a Dillon rodeo association meeting held Wednesday in the courthouse, reports show the 1948 event was the largest grossing in history. Finances disclosed 20 percent of net proceeds for Barrett hospital fund totaling 1000 dollars, plus 45 dollars from parade funds, overall 1045 dollars. Dividends for 1948 were two dollars per share, near the annual average. No dividend was paid in 1947. A plaque will honor Jefferson County Idaho mounted posse for its role in the 1948 event.

Irvine and Cottom finished the 1948 harvest of certified seed potatoes begun Sept 16. Favorable weather aided work with 50 to 75 men in the fields. Tubers were brought to the city for grading and storage as the large warehouse and cellar filled. Quality met expectations, a company spokesman said.

Truck Salvaged From Beaverhead River After Wreck
A Garrett company truck was dragged from the Beaverhead River after four days in the water. Harold Thurston, the driver, escaped before submersion and was unharmed. A rail shipped heavy duty crane from Salt Lake City set a runway up the river bank to recover the vehicle.

Two Men Sentenced in Forgery Case in Dillon
In district court Monday morning Eugene Saltz was sentenced to four years in state prison and Harvey Day to three years by Judge Lyman H Bennett. They were taken into custody by Butte police and brought to Dillon by Sheriff Paul Temple after allegedly cashing large denomination checks in Butte with forged McDowell ranch firm names from the Big Hole basin.
