Beaverhead County will auction several properties owned by the county. Minutes from the Beaverhead board of county commissioners regular meeting note ongoing road matters and advertising for the sale. The session began October 4 1937 with Commissioners Hartwig Jackson and Rife and Clerk Baker present.
Beaverhead county resident Maud Gannon died Saturday morning in San Bernardino California after two months away for health reasons Her body to be returned to Dillon for interment She was born April 13 1877 in Pioche Nevada and lived in Dillon area most of her life Surviving relatives include four children four sisters a brother her mother and six grandchildren
W. J. Howard of the Montana Retail Lumber Dealers spoke to the Dillon Rotary Club on housing. He stressed the building industry’s job-creating power, noted copper’s role in construction, and said modern lumber dealers sell many building materials. He discussed prefabricated housing ads and public interest.
Beaverhead chapter of the Order of DeMolay installed officers for the coming year at the regular meeting last Wednesday. Warren Stone Jr. was named master councilor. The staff includes senior councilor Pete Best junior councilor Bruce Gilbert and many others led by sentinel Garfield Pomeroy and almoner Bill Tait. The Women and Men’s Glee Clubs also elected officers for the year with Janet Smith and Victor Cushman in top posts.
Mrs Laura Tolman Scott of Armstead is seriously ill with heart trouble but slightly improved at home. Mrs Clarence Seage of Oakland California and Mrs LeGrand Young of Yakima Washington are visiting their mother.
Professors J F McBain and E L Fairbanks speak at a Sunday dedication on the Montana State Normal College campus honoring late Joseph Eaton Monroe. Dillon lodge No 16 A F and A M led the services for a man who served as Normal College president, local business figure, high school principal and weather observer for 36 years. The bronze memorial was funded by the Dillon Business and Professional Women's club with support from Anaconda Copper Mining Company.
Beaverheads third annual ram sale will be at the livestock pavilion in the county fair grounds next Saturday Oct 16. Buyers from southwestern Montana and parts of Idaho will attend. Five hundred range rams Rambouillets Hampshires and crossbreds will be sold. Col A G Jones Miles City Mont will act as auctioneer. Consignors include George D Selway Lime Sheep Bozeman Charles M La Due Sheridan Lester R Schulz Sheridan O A Schulz Sheridan Rambouillet Sheep Bozeman Ralph W Jorgenson Wisdom County Agent Bernard Williams sponsors the auction. The three previous sales have been highly successful.
Joe and Dale Metlen shipped a load of Shorthorn steers to Thomas E. Wilson of Wilson Packing in Iowa and a carload of calves to the American Shorthorn Breeders association in Waukesha Wisconsin. The steers will be divided to breeders for show pen preparations. The Junior Legion auxiliary met Friday night at Rosanne Callahan's home.
The senior class elected President Bernard McGinley Butte Vice President Violet Burns Manhattan and Secretary Treasurer Selena Adams Bro wning with Miss Marjorie Hamer as sponsor The sophomore class chose President Kate Seagren Butte Vice President Lawrence Buckley Butte Ethel Kennedy Monida and Ruth Kelly Dillon as secretary treasurer with Miss Maxine G Johnson as sponsor The freshman class organized temporarily with President Eda Jackson Dillon Vice President Joe Callaghan Three Forks and Lucile Kelly Dillon as secretary treasurer under Prof Rush Jordan The junior class has not yet announced officers Miss Margaret Hocking of the Normal college office staff departs for a vacation in Southern California.
The Beaverhead Federation of Women’s clubs held a semi annual conference in Dillon with 40 visitors. The day featured a business session at St James guild hall, talks on library service non road issues and junior organization work, a luncheon, and a puppet show for visitors at the Normal college.
Rosa Lee Brown was elected president for the coming year at the Art Club meeting on October 5 with Vernon Vandeberg as vice president Nina Thompson secretary Mary Louise Purdy treasurer Selena Adams shop treasurer and members Leah Os borne Marjorie Opp and Bill Bayerd in attendance Associate members Winnifred K Bengtson Ruth Nicol and Frances Provo were invited to continue. Potential new and former members urged to sign up by October 14 and speak with current members about club work.
Frisco Baker drove the car that left the highway near Lima and injured three Dillon youths. William Stewart and R B Billings suffered head injuries and were treated at Barrett hospital with Stewart held for several days. A front tire blow out was blamed for the crash.
Displaying increased ability in nearly every phase, the Beavers staged a late comeback to overwhelm the Butte high Reds 19 to 7 last Saturday. In their opener, Butte upset Dillon 18 to 0 before the Beavers grew into form.
Dorothy Anne Davis was elected president Ernest Desonia vice president Ethel Kennedy secretary and John Stevens treasurer by the Chanticleers on Monday October 4 A committee to arrange programs for the year was named with Ernest Desonia as chairman Bill Bayerd and Janet Smith as members A second committee to plan activities and membership requirements includes Eleanor Barney Barbara Schofield and Alice Fox Violet Burns Eleanor Barney and John Stevens were tasked to send items to other papers The club also approved subscribing to the New York Times.
October weather brought large crowds to BeaVerhead county for the C Bar D sale owned by F A Hazelbaker. Over 2,000 cattle passed through the ring with top prices on 55 head of weaner calves selling to Staggers of Nebraska at 10.10 per hundred and steers at 8.80.
The Business and Professional Women's club asks for voluntary subscriptions to fund a cemetery project, with total cost about 2200 dollars. They seek 650 dollars soon to lay ten inch steel pipe donated by the city and a spring pump, then 1000 and 650 dollars installments. Donations may be deposited at First National Bank or State Bank & Trust, or given to committee members Dora Smith, chairwoman, Elizabeth Winn, and Hayess T. Baxter.
Dillon public school marked Columbus Day with programs by junior high and sixth grade including orchestra numbers flag salute and a Columbus themed reading. Fourth graders performed a Columbus playlet and students delivered readings while portraits and poems complemented the day’s observance.
The Beaverhead local of the Montana Education Association held its first regular meeting of the term after a dinner at the Andrus hotel. G W McMullin presided and speakers included Supt Charles Henry on new MEA legislation Prin Conrad Orr on the Teachers Retirement Act and Dr E Davis on a possible program for cultural study of Montana. Earl Fairbanks reported on credit unions. Miss Mary Castles entertained with two piano solos.
M Club officers elected Thursday were Bernard McGinley as president Frank Davison as vice president and Larry Buckley as secretary treasurer Initiation plans were discussed and Coach Kakuske gave an athletic program talk Pledges named Ernest Desonia Bob Lee Donald Seyler Eddie Kastelitz Returning members include Buckley Riordan Michelic Osborne Laphan and Davison Mrs A A Malcolm Deer Lodge district president of the American Legion auxiliary attended the Monday night meeting at city hall.
