Tom Gilbert elected one of Dillon's first district commander veterans at a meeting of the District Convention of the American Legion. A child’s death in Buttelasst Tuesday noted. Attendance below expectations, but every post represented. convention deemed complete.
Dillon county attorney T E Gilbert elected district commander at Beaverhead post convention. William Ashton Helena named vice commander and W O Webb Anaconda re elected district adjutant. Over 100 Legionnaires attended. delegates from Butte Anaconda Deer Lodge Helena Whitehall Beaverhead. The opening parade led by Anaconda drum and bugle corps preceded sessions at the city hall.
Montana's big game season begins next Saturday October 15. Dillon hunters have planned extensive trips into snow covered ranges for deer. Many sportsmen leave tomorrow for hunting grounds in Beaverhead district with good hunting conditions anticipated as ranges are snow covered. Some will seek elk areas but most stay in Beaverhead mountains. The limit this year is one deer of any age or sex.
The local Parent-Teacher Association urges former members to renew and newcomers to enroll. Dues remain twenty five cents, inviting all community families to join a national network of parents and teachers working together.
George Williams was sentenced to four to eight years in the state prison after pleading guilty in district court to burglarizing the Eliel Brothers department store on September 29. Judge Henry G. Rodgers imposed the sentence. Williams was taken to Deer Lodge by Sheriff W. C. Orr. Others named in the robbery, Ruth Ross Frank Ross and Patrick Sullivan, posted $2,000 bonds for appearance and were released. Each pleaded not guilty last week in district court. Mike Fitzgerald was arraigned in justice court on a disturbance charge at the Monida hotel and paid a $50 fine.
F C Swartz a former Dillon rancher in Beaverhead valley threshed 611 sacks of Lima beans from 14 acres near Owensmouth California averaging 36 percent sacks per acre. Swartz previously farmed in Dillon Montana and also yielded 36 sacks to the acre last year, matching his prior high.
Governor Frank Hazelbaker of Rotary International's Sixth District presented two gifts to Montana Rotary clubs at the Dillon meeting. One is a large bronze Rotary wheel crafted by Montana women. Both gifts aim to promote Rotary ideals and district development. A public auction is set for October 20 near Glen to sell Chris Snyder ranch and surrounding county lands.
Peter Best nine year old son of Mr and Mrs Judson P Best of Dutton was seriously injured when he fell fifteen feet from a garage beam onto the concrete floor. Dr F M Poindexter treated him and reported he is rapidly recovering from the accident.
Harry L. Kupfer a well known Dillon druggist died in Butte after major surgery. He came to Dillon in 1879 with his mother Mrs Mary L Newton who ran a jewelry store. He later moved to Butte Spokane and finally Dillon before two years ago retiring to lower altitude. He leaves his mother and three children Karl Kupfer Mrs Boris Yeamans Winona Hupter.
The Moroni Olsen Players deliver a bright comedy in Denver with Dorothy Adams and Marion Clayton in leading roles. Moroni Olsen directs and stars, praised for powerful presence and engaging storytelling. The production drew strong crowds and promises another visit.
Beaverhead County Montana board of commissioners met October 3 1927 in regular session. The minutes were read and approved and September work by commissioners was approved. Each commissioner is to inspect and direct road bridge and county buildings and property for the ensuing month.
George Clemon a leading Big Hole basin rancher offers a purebred calf to a Smith-Hughes student from Beaverhead County High School. The student will care for and feed the animal for a year under the department supervision led by D. P. Thurber. If successful the baby beef will be shown at the state fair and the school fair next year.
Hundreds view exhibits over Friday and Saturday and attend festival events with Saturday night displays drawing praise. The junior fair and harvest festival showcased student projects and community participation.
Beaverhead county high school hosted ranchers and families for a harvest festival marking the junior fair’s close. Visitors praised the high school exhibits in agriculture and domestic science, with Monroe of the State Bank giving an industry talk, and A Peterson welcoming guests. Awards were announced for the agricultural division including sheep and wool showcases.
Fred Woodside of Dillon Montana, president of Montana Auto Supply and Montana Air Service, wrote a feature in the Pacific Radiator September issue discussing the future of aviation. The article accompanied a photograph of Woodside and his new Waco Ten aircraft. Woodside, a Chevrolet Buick and Cadillac dealer, connects Dillon to Oakland through a long shout for aviation.
W. B. Hartwig manager of the Hartwig theatre came back Monday from a three weeks trip to eastern points. He attended the Tunney Dempsey fight in Chicago and visited Rochester Minnesota for medical attention. He described the bout as worth the money and noted ringside seats for him and his father Charles Hartwig of Helena. He believes Dempsey lost by not returning to his corner promptly after a knockdown.
Dillon Independents organize for football and prepare for a home clash with the Englewood team of Butte at the Dillon athletic field. The club, formed by local stars, lost 31 9 to Beaverhead county high school in its first game but vows stronger form for the upcoming game against Englewood, a team defeated 7 0 by Dublin Gulch.
James La Marche sues United States Smelting and Mining Experiment Co. over injuries from an electric wire attached to a tram near its Hecla mines in Beaverhead County. He alleges the wire was down and caused his harm while riding a road near the mine.
