Jack Temple and John Wedum freshmen at Montana State College have been pledged to Sigma Alpha Epsilon. Mr and Mrs H M Warner were visitors in Butte on Monday.
Four men faced a $50 fine each and license revocation after being found with three Chinese pheasants. Sheriff Paul Temple and deputies arrested them Sunday on the highway north of Dillon after game warden Charles Price tipped off authorities. Guns were confiscated and the incident marked the season’s first strict fine for such a offense.
The county educational institute will gather rural teachers in Dillon on October 17 and 18. State educational supervisors will attend to report and offer suggestions. Rural schools likely remain closed Friday October 17 to allow instructor attendance.
All city bowlers and interested residents are invited to a meeting at City Hall tonight at 8 o clock. A bowling association will be formed and plans for league play will be outlined, with both men and women encouraged to attend.
City attorney T. F. McFadden ruled the remaining councilors should elect new members to replace resignations from last week's meeting, then submitted his own resignation to Mayor Bert Megquire. Four ward members resigned, and other actions included mourning George Opp, a police magistrate, and a beach land sale contingency tied to fencing. Harold Murray received a wage claim totaling $64.88.
Delta Kappa Gamma will hold its first state wide convention in Helena on Saturday October 11 with Beta chapter delegates from local and Butte groups. Beaverhead county USDA defense board chair J C Ferguson says milk eggs hogs and livestock marketings will rise in 1942 over 1941 by five two ten and twenty seven percent respectively.
Owen D. Speer district governor of Rotary spoke at the local service club during his annual visit. He emphasized Rotary’s ideal of service beyond fellowship and urged open mindedness to adapt to rapid technological and social changes. Speer met committee chairs after the banquet.
Normal College Bulldogs under Coach Bill Straugh travel to Helena Friday to face Carroll College Saints in the season opener. Last year Carroll won 33 to 0 in their visit here. Returning lettermen include DuPuis Wheat Burgess LaBuff G Aitken Kipp R Schultz Davis Womack. Freshmen Thill and Bud Deegan push for backfield and end positions. Womack faces pivot challenge from Chapman. Carroll reports full first string return and coach Simonich aims to run a Notre Dame style shift.
Mrs Martha Jane Truitt of California daughter of Mrs H D Gowen returns home Friday Mrs Gowen will accompany her and spend the winter in California.
William Evans, former Harlowton high school agriculture instructor and FFA advisor, arrived in Dillon to assume duties at the high school. He comes after six years teaching at Denton and Harlowton and holds a BS from Montana State College. He fills the vacancy left by D L Johnson who became principal at Beaverhead County High School. Mrs. Evans will arrive later this week.
Beaverhead chapter No. 20 of the American Legion will meet at 8 o clock Thursday night in the Metlen hotel for the Armistice day celebration committee. Reports by Dr. F M Poindexter and James McCollum, delegates to the National convention at Milwaukee, Wis., will be heard. Poindexter led the campaign for national commander Lynn J Stambough of North Dakota.
George Selke president of the American Association of Teachers Colleges will address a college assembly Friday at 10 AM. The association accredits the Normal college, in full standing. Selke is president of the State Teachers College at St Cloud Minnesota.
Montana hosts the fourth annual Dillon Hereford show and sale October 26 27 featuring 76 range bulls and herd sires. Breeders from multiple towns consign to the event with Fred Reppert auctioneering and A G Williams as clerk.
Courthouse and bank officials stated today that since Sunday October 12 is Columbus Day, banks and county offices will be closed on Monday October 13. Columbus Day is a legal holiday and the above offices will remain closed Monday October 13.

Beaverhead county home demonstration units plan Achievement Day events next Saturday. Exhibits from the past year will be shown at 10:30 a.m. in the high school art room, with a 12:15 luncheon at St Rose guild hall and a program 2 to 3:30 p.m. Multiple committees lead arrangements, headed by Mrs. Ike Rife Jr and Mrs. W. G. Squires, with members from Armstead Dillon Lima Wise River Melrose and Jackson assisting.
A group of twelve draftees left for Missoula this morning for formal induction under the Selective Service law. They will report to Camp Lewis, Washington, on Friday for assignment of service, including R L Zumbrennen, R F Richmond, J W Rife, T J Hill, J T Price, R N Erwin, R A Hummell, M B Ryan, E A Batchelor, E P Holloway and C A Buck.
National Fire Prevention Week opens Sunday and is observed by Dillon residents through the week under the direction of the Dillon Volunteer Fire Department. Firemen urge precautions, aid households and stores in checking for hazards such as faulty wiring and rubbish. special school programs are planned.
Montana Railway and Public Service commissioners recessed a hearing on Union Pacific proposed curtailment from Butte to Monida due to a manpower and power shortage tied to national defense. The board will decide later in Helena after reviews with witnesses, with protests from business groups and unions documented.
Beaverhead beat Butte 14-6 after trailing 6-7 at halftime. Dillon scored on a 30 yard pass from Conger to McMannis with extra point by Conger. Rogan intercepted a Butte pass on the 10 yard line for a 95 yard return. Beaverhead heads to Bozeman on Oct. 10 then hosts Livingston Oct. 17 before meeting Butte Central Oct. 24.
Recorder Giles and Deputy Stone issued three permissions to marry during the past week. Mearl Wheeler of Bremerton Washington and Alice Anderson of Blackfoot Idaho obtained their license Monday. Hobart Jewell and Minnie King of Dillon, and Dale Devere Landon and Marie Nate of Idaho Falls Idaho also received permission to wed.
The Beaverhead county high school P T A group voted to remain a separate entity from the adjoining public school association after the first meeting of the year. Pressure to split the two clubs was discussed and rejected. Mrs D L MacDonald of Bozeman spoke on the benefits of a high school P T A and stayed with Mrs O A Bergeson.
Col Ralph E Davis in charge at the Marine recruiting station asks all former Marines in the state to write him. He says he wants to hear from every man who has served in the Marines and notes that former Marines hold prominent positions in many fields.
Kiwanis club marked National Newspaper Week with an observance at the guild hall. Nearly 300 clubs participated last year. Beaver County High School editor Mary Ann Luebben delivered the main address tracing newspapers from Old Testament times to today. Other speakers included K B Kizer of Dillon Examiner and A Erickson of the Tribune speaking on service by city publications.
Mr. and Mrs. Howard Puyear and their daughter Joan and son Don ald of Denver Colorado visit the home of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Puyear. Mr. Puyear plans to return home this evening while Mrs. Puyear and the children will remain for a short visit.
The Beaverhead stock men and feeders tour attracted nearly 40 Mis soula and Ravalli county cattlemen with over 100 cattlemen at large. Visitors stopped at Big Hole basin and Grasshopper valley ranches including Montgomery place Tash Carroll Jardine Clemons Schinder Huntley Browning Harrison for a noon barbecue beef feast.
Leaders of the Girl Scout and Brownie packs discuss rally arrangements for October 18 at their Friday meeting. The annual Court of Awards will be held during the rally. Mrs. Paul Lacry and Mrs. K B Kizer were elected to the council. Mrs. Fred Kerr head. A joint Brownie and Girl Scout meeting will plan the rally next Wednesday. Merit badges and other awards will be given at the Court.
