Cottonseed Meal and Straw Ration for Winter Livestock
Cattle expert C N Arnett at Montana State College recommends feeding cottonseed meal with straw to stretch roughage. A 1000 lb steer needs about seven tenths lb of protein daily. straw supplies carbs but little protein. One lb of cottonseed meal provides 0.4 lb protein, costing about 4 cents per lb and roughly eight cents daily per steer, with $8 per 100 days for wintering. For cows 1200–1400 lb, plan about 2.5 lb cottonseed meal daily and add bran to aid consumption. Ensure salt and water, shelter cattle, and rely on straw stacks.
