Dillon unveils a new six-light-per-block street lighting system in the business district, praised as the finest in the state. The white way provides brilliant illumination and decorative appeal as paving nears completion, promising a celebratory civic occasion for residents.
William T Bonning former Wisdom merchant charged with grand larceny failed to appear for trial on $5000 bond. He was arrested in Milwaukee last Friday and will be brought back to Dillon for trial. A reward of $300 had been offered for his capture. Bonning previously ran a meat market in Wisdom and was once tied to cattle rustling. Three locals signed his bond. He traveled about 2000 miles to Milwaukee and did not deny the Beaverhead case.
Hurley Leach sold all upper Blacktail holdings to Hans Anderson a noted sheepman who will run the Beaverhead and Madison county ranches. The deal includes 700 acres deeded land a section of leased land buildings and improvements and 2700 head of sheep. The ranch is a strong sheep operation and hay producer. Sale price is about 55000. The Leaches will winter in California with no firm plans announced.
Mr and Mrs Bert Orr and their sons Byron and Bert Jr leave for New York City to sail for South America. They intend to spend several months there visiting important sites while Mr Orr, a wealthy cattleman, studies range and cattle conditions in the region.
A Melrose hotel death is ruled a murder by an unknown assailant after doctors testified the gun could not have been fired by Martin. Coroner Holland and Deputy County Attorney Riley lead an ongoing probe with no arrests yet. witnesses describe the scene and Martin’s recent behavior.
A September 1919 payroll analysis for Montana lists state officials and department workers across Helena and cities like Butte Bozeman Missoula and Dillon. It notes totals 130 667 monthly and highlights the largest departments and per capitas including Warm Springs hospital and the university. It also mentions the average pay across all employees at 120.25 a month.
George Ditty of Dillon Horse Sales reports strong demand for work horses with sale dates set for October 24 and 26. He notes daily inquiries and recent high prices, including a four hundred dollar work team sale. John Lenkersdorfer bought a carload for his sugar beet farm, praising the horses. About five hundred cattle are expected to be sold at the October auction.
W G Rae of Billings says demand for fine wool lambs remains strong while dark faced ewes drop to discard. Montana stockmen are keeping and expanding fine wool flocks to sustain prices for at least a year. He warns added storage costs may erode consignor profits versus immediate sale. Helena Independent.
Rev Hamstra resigns from local Baptist church and departs Friday with wife and two sons to take charge of a church district in New York state.
Regular session notes include discussion of traffic violations in new improvement district, proposed heavier fines, and reassessment of property where improvements were not made. A crossing on Franklin street Kent addition approved, salaries considered, and bills totaling 4274.90 audited across funds. Mayor Monroe supports fire department enhancements pending proper care.
Central High of Butte opened the season with a 20 to 0 victory over Beaverhead County High. Carroll scored all three touchdowns for the winners, two in the final period after one in the first. Dillon’s team, new and inexperienced, held no touchdowns but showed a solid effort. The Dillon lineup included Staudaker center, Smith and Stanchfield guards, Lloyd and Sweeney tackles, Wyman Smith quarterback, Ryburn and Telin halfbacks, Hatfield fullback. A later high school dance for visitors was held in the auditorium for pupils only.
Entertainer Jerome Shaffer will perform tonight at the Hartwig theatre to raise funds for the newly organized Beaverhead Post of the American Legion. Shaffer will donate fifty percent of all proceeds and is praised for his impersonations in southern Montana.
V S Phillips forged a $38.50 check at Dillon Dry Goods, was jailed by 6 PM, pleaded guilty Thursday, and sentenced to 2.5 to 5 years at Deer Lodge State Prison. He came from Butte to Dillon seeking work, claiming Seattle residence and wife ill. Police found several checks on him signed by R J Selway. A Catholic mission opens at the local church next Sunday conducted by a Paulist Father from Chicago.
