Judge Callaway Honored with Supreme Bench Appointment

Prominent Great Falls attorney Lew L. Callaway was appointed by Governor Dixon to the Montana Supreme Court, succeeding the late Chief Justice Théo A. Brantley. The oath was administered by Associate Justice Farr as Callaway took the bench. He has long practiced in the state, previously in Virginia City, and now with Callaway & Callaway in Great Falls. Beaverhead County Registration Totals For General Election

Beaverhead County reports 3652 eligible voters in the books closed September 22 for the general election on November 7. This marks a gain of 375 since the primary. Lima precinct shows the largest gain, with 65 new names, while Dillon South remains the county's largest by 552 registrations. Dillon North is 438, and Dillon West and Dillon South Central each have 312. Wisdom has fewer voters than Dillon North Central.

Miss Louise Almy Attends National Abstractors Convention

Miss Louise Almy returned from the east where she attended the national convention of abstractors in Des Moines Iowa as a delegate from the Montana Association. She is manager of the Southern Montana Abstract company at Dillon and reports a very successful meeting.

Hugh Bates Buys Into Wedum Lumber Company

H H Bates purchased a large block of stock in Wedum Lumber Company in Dillon. The acquisition includes all holdings of A A Elliott who has managed the company. Elliott will stay on as head until Bates assumes management at the start of next year. Bates is a known figure in Dillon with prior ties to Wedum interests in Grant and Armstead. He recently returned to Dillon with his family after residing in Columbus Ohio.

Veteran Celestial Dies in Dillon Last Thursday

Kin Chinn a long time Dillon resident died at his Chinatown home last Thursday morning from chronic bronchitis. Funeral held Friday, burial at Mountain View Chinese cemetery. Born in China 72 years ago he came to the United States 55 years ago and worked in placer mining near Virginia City before moving to Dillon twenty years ago to run a Chinese laundry and a store. He is survived by his wife and five children all in Dillon.

Beaverhead Beats Madison in a Lopsided Game

The Beaverhead baseball team overwhelmed Madison County on Sunday with a 15 to 5 victory at Sheridan. Earlier, Madison edged Beaverhead in a tight Wednesday matchup 4 to 3. Box scores note two-base hits by Brundage and Ferris, and a nine to seven left on base split.

Grass Fire Damages Autumn Range in Canyon

A fire set by careless campers at Ashbaugh Canyon head Sunday burned a large tract of fall pasture and threatened nearby timberlands. Ranchers fought the blaze for hours before it was controlled.

Report on Elkhorn mines shows strong production potential

New York mining engineer R. M. Atwater Jr. reported on the Elkhorn properties of the Boston and Montana Development Company. He said the mines could mill 1,000 tons daily, yielding $2.50 to $5 per ton, with 1,800 acres of patented mineral ground and 15 veins developed. A fault causing past shutdowns has been fully mapped, enabling future operation. a 40 mile Divide to drainage tunnel railway and Hoffstrand designed mill earned praise.

Potato crop to be big one in Beaverhead County

Beaverhead county farmers expect a record potato yield this year as nearly all ranchers planted heavily. A recent Gilman ranch exhibition demonstrated proper digging and sorting to meet federal standards, though market prospects remain not bright.

Predatory Animal and Bird Drive Fails to Bring Targets

Last Sunday the county held its first predatory animal and bird drive. Gophers coyotes wolves and mountain lions were listed but none were captured. Teams led by Roy Forrester and C C Thornton posted 3015 to 2915 points with Henry Deathh scoring 785 on 10 crows one owl 24 magpies and three hawks.
