The Normal College Bulldogs schedule a four team round robin event December 2 to 4 featuring Carroll College Mines and Dillon. Opening a tight 48-45 win over Amana at home, Normal shows veteran players starting the season strong.
Lt. de Casterline son of Mr and Mrs Casterline will be laid to rest Thursday at Brundage chapel at 2 p m interment in Mountain View cemetery with Beaver post American Legion and Lloyd Whipple Post W O at Mountain View officiating Honorary pallbearers from Beaverhead school and local boys.
Thirty six bowling teams competed in a mixed doubles tournament at the Dillon Bowling Center. The event highlighted the win season with a total prize pool of 72 dollars awarded to top performers.
Luther Smith, chairman of Beaverhead County Agricultural Conservation association, announced the annual election of community and county committeemen will be held Saturday, Dec 4. Voting sites include the ACA office in Dillon federal building the Dell hotel in Dell and the I C C F hall in Jackson. Farmers eligible for votes include participants in the 1948 Agricultural Conservation Program Sugar Program or contracts with the Federal Crop Insurance Corporation. Notices will be posted before elections in each community.
The Riverside Farm Bureau plans a Christmas party for Friday December 17 at a joint meeting with the 4-H Rustlers. Committee members include Mildred Benson Isabel Bay and Norman Downing. Elmer Peterson presided at a 75 member meeting last Friday evening with deputies reporting on regional farm issues and 4-H leadership talks.
Joseph F. Gelhaus born February 6 1866 in Mt. Savage Maryland grew up in Riverside Iowa moved to Montana in 1888 later ranch near Melrose Montana and lived in Dillon from 1916 to 1941 He died November 24 1948 in Spokane Washington funeral mass at St Rose Catholic church in Dillon with interment in Mountain View cemetery Survivors include daughters Katherine Cobb Olympia Washington Frances Gelhaus Spokane S M Rogan Portland and Harold Ness Portland two sons two grandsons and several sisters and a cousin and many nephews and nieces
The Tuesday Nighters social organization of Grace Methodist church sponsors a 1949 calendar printing. Norman Ovitt, president, announced it this week. This is the second year for the calendar which marks anniversaries and birthdays. The initial edition drew interest and the current edition continues the effort.
Beaverhead County residents celebrate a rural fire truck delivery funded by Riverside Farm Bureau and local donors. Committee chair Norman Downing led fundraising, totaling 4259.29 with county support for chassis and hoses. The unit serves Dillon city and rural areas, replacing aging city equipment for outside calls.
Beaverhead Chamber of Commerce launched its 1949 membership drive after a Tuesday dinner at the Andrus hotel dining room with President T. W. Sargent presiding. Alan Bradley was named drive chairman with Wilbur Squires and Paul Puyear as co chairmen. The Agriculture Reclamation committee will meet Thursday at the Andrus with a 6 30 dinner to discuss Beaverhead and Madison area agriculture electricity and reclamation, chaired by Herb Wheat, with many Dillon and area members listed as attendees.
Tandy W. Martin, 71, longtime county ranch worker, died in his sleep Sunday morning at the county farm where he was a patient. Born in Iowa August 10, 1877, he came here in 1914 and worked on local ranches including Poindexter & Orr. He never married and his only known relative is sister Mrs. Cartie Ie Peppers of Kansas City, Missouri. The remains were forwarded to Kansas City for burial.

Mrs Fulton Kelleher a well known Butte teacher who died Saturday afternoon from injuries after falling down a stairway at a friend's home had long connections to Dillon where the Kelleher family had lived for years.
Dillon lodge No. 1554 with lodges nationwide holds annual Elks memorial services next Sunday at IOOF hall starting 8 o'clock. Prof H V Legier of Normal College to deliver memorial address. Exalted Ruler Phillip J Lovell and officers lead the solemn ceremonies. Ruth Trask to open ceremonies with Don Wheat, Dale Dart to perform The Lord's Prayer, and Auld Lang Syne to close.
Dillon will host Blue Shield Blue Cross enrollment from December 6 to December 11 under Maynard Johnson, with headquarters at the Chamber of Commerce. Doctors and Barrett hospital officials back the non profit plans, urging residents to consult their doctors and ensure enough participation for group eligibility.
Theodore Miller aged 37 a Centennial valley native died last Wednesday night at Murray hospital Butte after five weeks as a patient. He lived in Beaverhead county all his life worked in ranching and garage business. Survived by wife Mary infant son two brothers Lincoln and William Lima sister Ethel Bray Pocatello sister Florence Anangst. Funeral held Tuesday at Brundage chapel with Rev Lewis D Smith of St James Episcopal Church officiating. Interment Mountain View Cemetery.
A large group of ranchers from Southern Beaverhead and Madison counties attended the Saturday funeral for James M Nye an early Centennial valley ranchman who died November 21 in Portland Rev James M Hunter of the Methodist church conducted services at Brundage chapel and interment followed at Mountain View cemetery Pallbearers included Ben Hart P Mayberry William Shambow Bert Megquier Walter Pitcher and Frank Schulz
Mr and Mrs John Anderson and Mr and Mrs Ralph Huntley along with Gail Huntley left Wednesday by car for San Francisco California to visit the Anderson children and other relatives and friends during the trip.
Beaverhead residents marked Thanksgiving with quiet, peaceful observances in Dillon and nearby areas. Families gathered for traditional meals while some enjoyed a late hunting season finale, churches held services, and business slowed or closed for the holiday amid reflections on 1948’s blessings.
The American Cancer Society Beaverhead unit announces a donated calf named George Harrison to be auctioned at a later time and place. Workers hope for more livestock donations before the sale to boost the fund drive. Mrs Williams comments on the campaign schedule.
Widely known rancher Marl J. Cantrell died Wednesday at Barrett Hospital following several weeks of illness. Born December 31, 1880 in Pickens South Carolina, he moved to Beaverhead County in 1905 and ran a large ranch in the southern part of the county. Surviving relatives include his widow May V. Cantrell, a son and daughter in law Hovey and wife, a daughter and husband John and wife Sweeney, all of Dell, two brothers Tom Cantrell of Lima and William R Cantrell of Pickens, plus three sisters Emma Porter and Wright of S. S. Wright of Barley, and a granddaughter.
