Mrs. Mary Jane Harkness, a longtime Dillon resident born in 1853 in Willow Creek Idaho, marked her 90th birthday with gatherings hosted by Mrs. Fred Dart and Mrs. Bert Gelway. She and her late husband lived in Bannack for years and have two deceased daughters. Her family includes granddaughters in Washington Oregon and California and a grandson in the Army. W D Tovey is a Dillon nephew. She remains active with crocheting, silk block work, and home duties.

Church Leader to Speak at First Lutheran Wednesday
Miss Arna Njaa of Minneapolis executive director of the International Lutheran Daughters of the Reformation will speak at First Lutheran church on Wednesday December 1 at 8 p m. The Dorcas Society sponsors the event and the public is invited. Njaa is a St Olaf graduate and Lutheran Bible Institute graduate with seven years of teaching in Plentywood Montana and seven years in her current post. The LDR supports three groups for girls and women and conducts extensive missionary activity with about 21000 dollars donated annually including funding for a mission station in Shismaref Alaska and two full time Jewish missionaries in Brooklyn New York plus support for three foreign mission schools.

Scrap Paper Drive Led by Beaverhead High Chapter
Future Farmers of America at Beaverhead County High School will run a nationwide scrap paper drive to ease a paper shortage. William Evans, agricultural instructor, directs the campaign with collection on December 4 and 11. Donors may leave paper at a prepared warehouse or have it picked up by FFA members.

Stolen Auto Recovered After Canyon Chase
Two youths, Stanley Barrett 17 of Oakland and James Felcyn 15 of Bis marck, N. C., were taken into custody after driving a reportedly stolen 1941 Ford V-8 through a canyon north of Armstead. Officers pursued, the car was recovered undamaged, and the pair were turned over to Sheriff Sid Close of Dubois to face charges. Felcyn claimed to be Navy AWOL from Camp Farragut.

Monument Erected for Late Elephant Pitt at County Fairgrounds
The Cole Brothers circus placed a granite slab on the spot at the county fairgrounds where their prize elephant Pitt was killed by lightning on Aug. 6, 1943. The inscription honors Pitt as the last of the John Robinson herd of military elephants age 102. The stone was made by Wendel Cannon of Butte and placed beside Pitt’s grave marked by the age line.

Dance for Inductees to Be Given Tonight
Members of the December contingent of draftees will be honor guests at a dance tonight at the city hall auditorium. Carl P. Conklin infant son of Lt. and Mrs. Carl P. Conklin and grandson of Dr. L. G. Dunlap of Anaconda died of suffocation at his Missoula home. Born May 4, the child suffocated unnoticed in its crib and died before the Missoula fire department arrived with a pulmotor.
