Red Cross roll call under way in Beaverhead County

Beaverhead county conducts its annual Red Cross drive with a strong early response. Five Dillon booths operated Saturday at local banks the post office Normal college and Andrus hotel while many firms report full or strong membership. Ermont mine again reaches full enrollment with 74 dollars total. Residential canvassing planned later this week.

Temple Wins Biggest Majority in County Race

Official returns compiled by the board of commissioners show Beaverhead county voters casting 82 percent turnout with 3,120 ballots in the sheriff contest. Sheriff Paul H. Temple won by 1,344 over J N Campbell. Bertie Mathews had the smallest margin, 249, over Sylvester P Meade. Referendum 40 passed 2,205 to 387.

Beaverhead 4 H Clubs Reorganize for Year

Beaverhead county 4 H clubs reorganized for the year at meetings last week. At the Dell Mountain View 4 H Foods club session awards were presented to Lois Martinelli Gloria Nelson Viola Cantrell Betty Raddatz La Donne Muncie and Effie Brothers for first year club work in a breakfast project. Janet Peterson and Alice Knox received awards for third year work on a breakfast project, and Gertrude Knox for fourth year work on a luncheon project. Helen McNinch Mary Hansen and Anna Hansen were given awards for fifth year work on a luncheon project. Mrs N L Nelson is leader of the club for the second year with Mrs Ray Martinell leader for the first year.

Mrs Willis Heads Seal Sale Drive

Miss Mary L. Innes announced a 1938 Christmas Seal fundraising drive with Mrs. F D Willis chairing Dillon efforts. Seals go on sale Thanksgiving through Christmas for the 32nd annual U.S. campaign against tuberculosis. Mrs Willis urged moral and financial support as the program highlights home protection and life saving through Seals.

Gas Prices in Dillon Too High, Chamber Says

Dillon chamber of commerce directors approved measures to equalize gasoline pricing with nearby towns. They cited a one-half cent recent rise by oil companies and ongoing higher Dillon prices despite retracting that increase. J L Mayland urged action against perceived price discrimination.

Beaverhead Rancher Michael Lauterbach Dies at 63

Michael Lauterbach 63 a longtime Beaverhead county resident died suddenly at his ranch home north of Dillon early Thursday morning. The death was due to a heart attack and his passing shocked friends across the county. He was born August 9 1875 in Germany and came to America at 17, shortly after settling in Beaverhead county where he lived continuously.

Heaston Murder Trial Nearing Jury: Potts Slaying

The William J. Heaston Sr trial for the killing of Wise River rancher Joseph W. Potts entered its sixth day as defense witnesses testified and state rebuttal awaited. Character witnesses dominated the morning and early afternoon sessions with a jury unlikely to hear verdict before tomorrow.

Armistice Day and Scout Awards Highlight Dillon Event

Girl Scouts of Bitter Root troop received gold and silver star awards at a marshmallow roast at Dillmont Park led by Miss Florence Hellman. Tenderfoot pins went to new fifth graders including Melba Jane Bedford and Margot Luebben. Armistice observances in Dillon included community programs, a speech by Rev. John Como, and a minute of silence at 11 o'clock followed by taps.

Mr and Mrs Michael A Henneberry longtime Beaverhead residents mark fifty years of marriage at their Ryan Canyon ranch on Nov 5. He arrived in the county 70 years ago. she 58 years. Beaverhead county home demonstration clubs plan Achievement Day at the training school auditorium Saturday at 2 PM. Dr. Marlin K. Farmer of the Normal College faculty will discuss Hitler and World Peace. Lillian Stone will outline the county program for the year. Public invited to attend and view countywide displays.

Legislature Altered by Election Balances Power in State

Republicans gained seats in the house with 44 members up from 21, while Democrats secured the balance of power with 68 leaders in the chamber. Senate results gave Republicans 14 new members to join 11 holdovers, totaling 25 GOP seats.

Beaverhead Slithers Through Mud To Win

Beaverhead high’s football team defeated Hamilton 14 to 0 in a muddy Armistice Day game. In the third quarter Walker and Good scored TDs, with Walker and Whipple adding the extra points. Wilcox intercepted a Hamilton pass to thwart an early threat. The contest was played under Awccas Legion auspices.

Hunter Fined for Possession of Elk Meat in Lima

Ward Wright was fined $200 after arraignment before Judge L. C. Ford in Lima for illegal elk meat possession. Deputy Game Warden Charles Price arrested him. The elk, reportedly from Yellowstone park herd introduced last winter by Beaverhead Sportsmen, carried tag number 471.
