Broadwater and Renville crews Return Home After Pacific War Ends

Fa Aboard the Assault Transport USS Broadwater in the Pacific. Crew members from Dillon and nearby towns recall six months of duty, crossing the equator, and cargo runs to Hawaii Philippines Palaus Marianas Caro lines and Dutch New Guinea before news of hostilities ending. Several men from the USS Renville also recount wartime service including landings at Iwo Jima Okinawa and Guam.

War Surplus Officer to Visit Dillon for Veterans Info

War surplus officer R. McAvoy of Smaller Warplants Corp will visit Dillon on Thursday November 15 to assist veterans seeking surplus commodities. He may be joined by Mr. Sheppard of Veterans Administration and will work with James McCashin of the Montana Veterans Welfare Commission. Dell Herder Found Dead Near Camp

Henry Polzen a 32 year old sheep creek herder was found dead near his former camp fifteen miles west of Dell with a bullet wound in the head a 30 30 rifle lay beside him Coroner Raymond Schwartz called the wound personal safety related The body was found by former employer Farnest Harkness Polzen left his camp on Big Muddy creek the prior Saturday and was seen in Dell the next day He refused wages when Harkness offered settlement earlier reports say he was last seen Tuesday afternoon by Leslie McNinch

Funeral services for Fred Spears Duree held in Beaverhead County

Funeral services were held for Fred Spears Duree 75 at Brundage funeral home with Rev. Lewis D. Smith officiating and burial in Mountain View cemetery. A Beaverhead County resident for 33 years he died Saturday morning at the county hospital after a period as a ranch hand and rider for local outfits.

Beaverhead County Trails in Victory Bond Drive

Beaverhead county remains at 40 percent of its $90,000 E bond quota in the Victory loan drive. W. W. Hawkins, county war finance chairman, urges heavy purchases to meet the county’s overall $250,000 bond goal as it lags behind past campaigns. An education week program at Bagley school Friday at 2:30 includes the school band directed by L A Gregory, a sixth grade song, and a Citizenship talk by Mrs. Lewis D. Smith.

Dillon lodge No. 1554 hosts Peter E. McBride Anaconda district deputy of Montana West BPO Elks with a 7 pm banquet at St James guild hall followed by a lodge meeting. About 100 Elks and ladies expected. after dinner a card party and an initiation class are planned.

Herder Dies of Exposure in Sheep Creek Basin

Jud Brown, 76, a Sheep Creek basin herder eight miles from his camp, was found dead Saturday afternoon. Officials cited exposure as the likely cause after his disappearance since Wednesday. Sheriff Claude Lay and employer Paul Martinell located the body. Brown had no known relatives.

Teachers of Beaverhead Meet Here

Nearly every district in Beaverhead county attended the annual teachers institute at the county high school last Friday. Elementary and high school sessions were held with programs in separate rooms and several Normal college students present. Prominent speakers included state officials and national temperance representatives.

Hunter Dies In Elk Hunting Accident In Wise River

Raymond J. Gordon 39 a Dillon garage mechanic was accidentally shot and killed Friday while elk hunting on a ridge west of Wise River. His companion William Griffith Dillon said a fire was being built when a shot rang out Gordon died minutes later the bullet came from Griffiths rifle. Coroners inquest ruled death an accidental gunshot wound in the Reservoir district with the shooting occurring on a high ridge between Reservoir and Lost creeks.

Beavers to Face Columbus in Southern Division B Final

Dillon and Columbus Beaverhead county high schools Beavers will meet in Saturday's southern division Class B title game. Principal D. L. Johnson of Dillon announced the matchup after both schools requested the contest and a coin flip determined the site. Professor Walter T. Scott announced the coin toss result.

Hunter dies Monday in Big Hole Basin hunting camp

Henry Staffan 51 a well known Anaconda sportsman died of a heart attack Monday morning at his hunting camp near the Jack Anderson ranch in the Big Hole basin north of Wisdom. He had been big game hunting since Sunday with companions from Anaconda and Fishtrap and planned to stay several days. He worked at the Anaconda Reduction works and was active in bowling. He is survived by his wife a brother and a sister.

Victim of Auto Wreck Helmsville Former Dillon Resident

Samuel M. Carruthers known as Max Carruthers, a former Dillon resident and grandson of S. S. Carruthers, was killed in a highway accident near Helmville. The car carrying six others skidded on a curve, hit a guard rail, and plunged into the Little Blackfoot river. Two women, Mrs. Glenn Davis and Mrs. Herrick Parsons, drowned. several others escaped with minor injuries.

Charter of World Group Is Discussed

Prof Rush Jordan spoke at the Dillon club during international week on the United Nations charter. He said cooperation of 50 nations offers hope the world can avoid calamities and that freedoms and economic justice may curb war. He noted 29 nations have ratified the charter and it takes big five approval plus a majority of smaller states to take effect.

Armistice Day Observed in Dillon by Legion Program

Dillon marked Armistice Day with a Beaverhead county high school program in the auditorium under Beaverhead post of the American Legion. Students and townspeople attended as the film War Comes to America was shown and the high school band performed. at eleven the audience observed a moment of silence and taps. Albert Erickson led as chairman. the Legion's Andrus hotel headquarters were open all day.

Beav erhead AAA elect ion dates set in

Beaverhead county AAA schedule announced by Floyd Kenison lists election times for four districts on November 17 1945 with two alternates and three regular committeemen per district. Delegates to a county convention will elect a new county committee November 24. About 210 eligible farmers and ranchers participate in conservation and flaxseed payment programs focusing on soil and water conservation.

Family found safe after Birch Creek search

Mr and Mrs Walter Freshman of Butte and their sons Joseph 17 and Charles 14 were found alive in a saw mill cabin on Birch creek fifteen miles north of Dillon after spending Monday night there. A stalled car forced them to hike eight miles to safety as a blizzard dumped more than a foot of snow.

Woodcraft Lodge Highlights Birthday Honor At Meeting

Neighbors of Woodcraft honored Janie Haynes for 42 years of Hollywood circle membership at the regular meeting last Wednesday night. A birthday cake and a silver pin were presented, with a poem by Nellie Nelson. Committees organized the December pot-luck dinner and refreshments were served.
