Joe Metlen Aims for Democratic Speaker Post

Beaverage Beaverhead county representative Joe Metlen, re elected to the Montana Legislature's twenty fourth assembly, announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for speaker of the house for the session opening January 1935. Metlen is noted for long continuous service since 1928 and is regarded as a thorough loyal legislator both at the capitol and in Beaverhead.

Police Force Reduced to Three in Dillon

Dillon city council reduced the police force to three members at a regular meeting. Night officer Charles Bourquin was dismissed. Remaining officers’ hours will be set by Chief Charles Nelson. The council warned beer estabishments to stay orderly or risk a dancing ban and possible license revocation.

Woodcraft Lodge Elects Officers Last Wednesday

The Dillon Neighbors of Woodcraft elected officers for the coming year at the regular meeting last Wednesday evening. Mae Main was elected guardian neighbor with Gertrude Lyon, Dora Smith, Jessie Smith, Nellie Nelson, Berniece Mellen, and Mrs Pilon as assistants. Other posts named include Bertha Cardinale magician, Belva Frederickson attendant, Nellie Sanner outer sentinel, Eula Berry flag bearer, Susan Wolfe musician, Florence Hughes captain of guards, Frank Wright correspondent.

Attorney Tom Gilbert Speaks at Dillon Rotary Dinner

County Attorney Tom Gilbert was the main speaker at the Dillon Rotary Club weekly dinner on Armistice Day. He urged service members to prevent future wars, highlighted the influence of the American Legion and Legion Auxiliary, and called for universal military service and the removal of private profits from war. Thomas BE Luebben urged support for the annual Red Cross roll call opening Sunday. Dr. Robert BE Albright reviewed the week’s events and election results.

Armistice Anniversary Observed by Veterans and Legion

Dillon marked the Armistice anniversary with morning exercises at the Hartwig theater led by County Attorney T. E. Gilbert. The Beaverhead post staged patriotic programs, a sports event, the Legion banquet, and a city hall dance, emphasizing peace through preparedness and lasting comradeship.

Twenty two Beaverhead county high school students earned honor roll spots yesterday. Normal Bulldogs dominated the Miners 13 to 0 at the fairgrounds, delivering a sharp passing attack and stout defense. Red Hamilton connected on a 40 yard strike to McGinley just before halftime for the game’s lone touchdown as Montana Normal stifled Montana School of Mines after a late scare.

Butte Banker Believed Lost in Wise River Mountains

John Teal, a Butte banker, is reportedly missing in the Wise River mountains after leaving a local ranch yesterday morning and not returning by nightfall. Sheriff James A. McCollum received the report this morning.

Beaverhead County High School football defeated St Peter’s of Anaconda 25 to 14 in a Monday program at the fairgrounds. Brown scored all four Beaver touchdowns while Eddie Clark’s 30 yard interception return accounted for the Saints’ score. Earlier the Beavers beat Lima 13 to 0 in the same event.

Patrick Connor Dies At Home Near Melrose

Patrick Connor 74 died at the ranch home near Melrose where he had lived 21 years. A native of Caldonia New York he is survived by his wife Ora Connor two daughters Mrs Lee Wilhelm Sheridan and Mrs Otto Boettcher Jr Melrose four sons George Connor Boulder City Nevada Frank Thomas and William Conor Melrose and a brother Thomas J Connor Montesano Washington.

Assault Victim In Serious Condition At Barrett Hospital

George Winters, 65, is in critical condition at Barrett hospital after being struck on the head with firewood. Jesse Moore, 49, is jailed awaiting arraignment on first degree assault charges in the Thompson ranch bunkhouse incident near Dell. If Winters dies, County Attorney T. Be Gilbert will pursue murder charges. Moore was found Sunday by Sheriff James A. McCollum and Undersheriff W. Barry in a sheep wagon on the Thompson ranch hills after officers and a ranch foreman and Examiner reporter searched the area.

Red Cross Roll Call Under Way In Beaverhead

Under Roll Call Chairman J C Fuller the American Red Cross campaign for county membership began in Beaverhead with a target to reach the quota in a week or ten days. Representatives are set in communities to run the drive through Thanksgiving. The county historically supports full membership and is urged to join as the Red Cross faces a larger task this season. Beaverhead residents are increasingly aware of the Red Cross work from personal contact, and past giving has exceeded local memberships.

Sheep Pelts Shipped From Dillon in Government Deal

Beaverhead county stockmen have this week to deliver pelts from condemned sheep purchased by the government. The first carload, 6,864 pelts, left Dillon last Thursday destined for Miles City. Pelts go to the First National Wool Warehouse with Bert Stevens as AAA receiver. Ditty for FSRA handles shipment. County Agent Williams notes government shelter belt trees available at 40 to 60 cents per hundred, hardy stock, with existing plantings thriving.

Dell 4-H Club Elects Officers At Dell Meeting

Beaverhead county’s first 4-H club organized at Dell elected officers for Mountain View 4-H club with Tayame Murakami as president and Bessie Knox as vice president. Julia Poe became secretary and Mary Hansen treasurer. Helen McNinch named yell leader. Leaders are Mrs Joe Dowling and Miss Nellie McKnight. Lillian Stone, home demonstration agent, spoke to members as more clubs form under Stone and County Agent Bernard Williams.

Beaverhead County Election Cost Reported

Beaverhead County billed for general election expenses totaling 2047.83 dollars as announced by Clerk and Recorder Albert Baker. The cost per registered voter was under 50 cents with official returns sent to Helena and warrants issued to judges clerks and assistants.
