College Faculty Members Attend State Meets

Several faculty members will attend professional meetings on November 14 and 15. O K Moe and Elena Slepcevichio head to Helena Friday morning for a Montana Health Education meeting on teacher training. Myrtle Savidge and Genevieve Albertson travel to Butte for the English Faculty meeting of the Greater University. About twenty representatives from six units are expected. Albertson serves as president. Savidge chairs a plays exchange committee and helps bring productions to Montana. J Ford McBain and William R. Pope will attend the Montana Chemical Society meeting in Butte Saturday evening.

Commissioners Purchase Trailer for Highway Use

Beaverhead County Montana board meets November 3 4 5 1947 in regular session. They advertise for bids for one truck cab and chassis for rural fire fighting equipment and open bids December 2 1947. A trailer bid is awarded to Westmont Tractor Co for a used 20 ton low bed trailer. Also reports on U S Employment Office activity and a retirement petition is received.

Bulldogs and Ricks Battle to 6-6 Tie in Friday Fight

In a rugged clash at the Vigilante field, Rexburg’s Ricks College and Normal Bulldogs battled to a 6-6 tie. Both teams scored in the final half but failed extra points. Ricks led briefly in the third quarter after a series of line plays, then Normal’s Fey broke through on a ten yard run following a blocked punt. McDonald’s drop kicks remained off form as the Bulldogs, already conference champions, finished their season with three wins, one loss and two ties.

Wisdom Woman Elizabeth Capehart Dies in Butte

Mrs. Elizabeth Capehart aged 48 wife of Harold Capehart prominent Wisdom merchant died last Saturday afternoon in a Butte hospital after a year long illness. Native of the Big Hole basin she was active in Wisdom civic life and a longtime Eastern Star member. She is survived by her husband a son Stewart Capehart and daughter-in-law in Wisdom three grandchildren two brothers and sisters in law and other relatives. Funeral was held at the Wisdom Masonic hall with Rev. W H Bessire of Missoula officiating and interment in the local cemetery.

Funeral rites for the late Rosa Peterson were held last Friday afternoon at the Brundage chapel with Rev. Lewis D. Smith of St. James Episcopal church officiating. Interment was made in the cemetery at Mountain View.

Tuberculosis Organization Formed Here in Dillon

A Beaverhead County tuberculosis and Health association was formed at a Dillon meeting in the council rooms. The Dillon Shakespeare club called the session to organize countywide seals sales for tuberculosis relief. Officers include President Mrs. Sheldon E. Davis and Secretary Mrs. John Hartwig with Dr. J. Thompson Baker as Vice President.

Salmonsen Faces Check Fraud Charge After Return

Sheriff Paul Temple returns from Tacoma with Glen Salmonsen who was arrested on a warrant from our county for issuing fictitious checks. Salmonsen allegedly cashed worthless checks over $300 in Dillon businesses before fleeing to the coast and being located via a girlfriend’s address.

Dillon Ski Tournament Sets Dates and Regional Meets

The Northern Rocky Mountain Ski association met in Helena with Dillon Ski Club representatives and Beaverhead high school delegates. Sanctioned events include Bear Canyon Bozeman Jan 3 4 and Dillon Jan 24 25 plus Whitefish Jan 31 Feb 1 and more across the state. Regional high school tryouts for Sun Valley finals to select three boys and two girls will be held January 18, with a January 11 school of instruction in Butte for ski jumping judges.

Butala Funeral Rites Conducted

Funeral services for the late John Butala pioneer ranchman were held last Thursday morning at St. Rose Catholic church. Rev. Fr. Timothy Clifford celebrated requiem high mass. Interment followed in Mountain View cemetery. Pallbearers were Martin Markovich Marcus Staudahur John Zugel Pete Rebich Carl Bolich and Joe Mautz.

Father of Dillon Lady Passes Away

Martin Ricks aged 66 died after a brief illness Thursday at Barrett hospital. He was the father of Mrs Bernard Whitworth of Dell and was well known locally. A native of Idaho, he taught in Pocatello public schools and is survived by another daughter Mrs Earl Scott and son Kenneth M. Ricks of Pocatello, plus brothers and sisters. The body was sent to Rexburg, Idaho, for burial after funeral services Saturday in Rexburg.

Concert series planned for Dillon next year

Dillon music lovers approved forming a community concert series with three or more acts for 1948 49. Craig Hutchinson of New York City outlined talent sourcing while locals elected officers including T Lee McCracken president and Mrs O K Moe secretary and named a large board of directors.

Injured Woman in Lima Area Car Crash

Mrs. Rachel Jones of Monida was injured when a car driven by Leon Lewis of Provo Utah collided with a truck driven by Ralph Jones near Lima. Lewis posted 50 bond to appear before Judge Ford on November 20. Patrolman Wright cited a woman driver Elaine Stewart of Butte for concealing a flare at the wreck scene.

City Eyes $55,000 Bond for 450000 Gallon Reservoir

At a city council meeting the approval was given to issue a $55,000 bond to build a 450000 gallon reservoir west of the city to augment the Dillon water system. A special election within two months will decide the measure, with no tax increase expected as bonds are retired from water department earnings. The project would double storage capacity and ease years of water shortages.

Rotary Talk Frames Japanese Internment For Dillon Audience

Albert Erickson chaired the Dillon Rotary Club meeting at the Andrus hotel. Dr. J. Richard Olson of the University of Minnesota discussed internment camps during wartime and warned against race prejudice. Bernice Bachelder spoke on One-tenth of One Per Cent highlighting Japanese relocation, education needs, and government policy.

Rebekah Officer Visits Montana Lodges

Mrs. Ethel Krogness of Glen Dive, assembly warden of the Rebekah lodge of Montana, spent last week visiting chapters in the area. She stayed with Mr. and Mrs. Fred Dart, attended an Andrus hotel dinner, breakfast with the Past Noble Grand club,banquet in Jackson, and a Melrose luncheon with official visits and a gift presentation.

Chester A White of Lloyd Whipple post No 4163 VFW has been named deputy chief of staff for District No 4. The district includes Dillon and is led by John W Bonner commander of the department of Montana.

Campaign Starts for Beaverhead Museum Fund Drive

A Beaverhead Chamber of Commerce campaign to raise 13500 for a new museum and office on the depot lawn in Dillon began with a group led by Presidents Lambert Eliel W W Wetzel and J C Wedum. They reported 3000 raised and 500 promised, with 18 Dillon merchants pledging 100 each. Mrs Fred Woodside chairs the finance committee. The drive will run through December 15 with outreach to Big Hole basin ranches and rural districts before city efforts.

Armistice Day Observed By Beaverhead Auxiliary

The American Legion Auxiliary Beaverhead post 20 held a turkey dinner for Gold Star wives, mothers, and sisters to honor those who served in the world wars. The event listed many attendees and noted decorations, arrangements led by Mrs. Williss Haskell and Mrs. Warner, with transportation organized by multiple volunteers.
