Beaverhead County Completes Official Canvass With Record Turnout
Beaverhead County finished its official canvass last Thursday with a record 86 percent turnout among 4 296 electors. Majorities shifted on some races while the eight hour law vote narrowly passed 1 684 to 1 619. The county rejected the gin marriage and state insurance measures and approved the county consolidation amendment by about 300 votes.

Rep. Joe Metlen of Armstead and Ernest Orr of Dillon are named to the Beaverhead Agricultural Conservation association county committee. County Agent Bernard Williams said the committee approved range examiner reports on rancher requirements for payment. John DeBerry alias John Norton, arrested in Dillon on a shoplifting charge, is on his way back to Missouri after extradition papers were secured in Helena. DeBerry previously broke jail in Missouri while serving a burglary sentence. Clerks at Eliels flagged him during an attempted theft. Merle Aullman, sentenced to three years for stealing and slaughtering a calf from the Don Anson ranch, was taken to Deer Lodge by Sheriff McCollum and Deputy Flynn.
