Early returns show Beaverhead county casting a record ballot total with a Democratic sweep for most incumbents. Sheriff James A. McCollum lost to Republican Paul Temple by a large margin while George Montgomery won state senate, Joe Metlen captured the state house, and Nell Doyle led county superintendent race.

Fred Bennion of Helena, leader of the Montana Taxpayers Association, was hospitalized at Barrett hospital for a week after his car left the highway near Lima to avoid a horse. His brother Bes Bennion escaped with minor injuries. They were en route to Salt Lake City for their mother's death.

Angry Bear Climbs Tree After Dillon Man Firefight

O T Vandegrift, Dillon volunteer fire chief and Union Electric lineman, is famed for climbing skill. He raced up a tall pine in Bloody Dick as two angry bears with bullet wounds attacked. He fired at the wounded bear and the pair then turned on him.

Beaverhead High Students Hold Election Here

Beaverhead county voters cast a record general election total with 320 absentees. Beaverhead High School pupils conducted a mock poll ten days prior, publishing results in Beaverhead weekly. Roosevelt led 139 to 80 against London while Hazelbaker topped 165 to 62. county ticket votes included Temple 127 and Doyle 138.

Red Cross Roll Call Opens Armistice Day Campaign

The Red Cross annual membership drive begins next Wednesday Armistice Day and runs through Thanksgiving. Beaverhead leaders T E Luebben Lee Light and Luella Stickney head the effort with Elizabeth Clemon assisting. Beaverhead ranks third in Montana with 778 members, behind Lewis and Clark and Gallatin. Miss V M Iams praised Montana for 30 069 registrations and cited 403 families rehabilitated by Red Cross work in the state.

Rotary Head Guest Addresses Dillon Club

L. W. Upshaw district governor of Rotary International sixth district visiting Dillon Rotary at the Andrus hotel spoke on golden rule principles and world peace through Rotary. Harold Snow led the meeting with Darwin Johnson and others in attendance.

Beaverhead Dam Funds Allocated for Two Projects

The Public Works Administration designates loans and grants for Beaverhead Rock in Beaverhead County and Jefferson River Diversion in Jefferson County. Montana projects include Ruby River allocations and the Beaverhead Rock storage plan serving Twin Bridges Silver Star Waterloo Whitehall and Cardwell with a rock-fill dam 1500 feet crest long 80 feet high on Beaverhead River to impound 81000 acre feet.

First Cold Snap Hits Beaverhead County

Beaverhead county saw a sharp cold snap with below zero readings. A Sunday night minimum of 6 below zero was logged by weather observer Prof. J. F. McBain, following a weekend snowstorm that dumped several inches across the county. Roads iced over and motorists were urged to limit trips while ranchers welcomed the moisture. A Girl Scout leaders meeting was held at Mrs. N. L. Henry’s home.

Anniversary Armistice Observed in Beaverhead County

Beaverhead post of the American Legion and the Legion Auxiliary plan an all day Armistice observance in Dillon next Wednesday. Activities begin at 10 30 a m with patriotic exercises at the Hartwig theatre led by Conrad Orr principal of Beaverhead County High School.

Beaverhead County Men Campaign for Frank Hazelbaker

Between 20 and 26 Beaverhead county residents toured Montana to acquaint voters with Frank A. Hazelbaker’s qualifications for governor. The self funded effort in two person teams toured cities towns and rural areas to show Hazelbaker’s good points and garner support from neighbors.

Crowd watches returns in county court room election night

A large crowd gathered at the courthouse as guests of the Examiner Tribune and party central committees co operated to obtain results from a spirited county election. Beaverhead returns plus a radio national result were shared while headquarters stayed in touch with state news agencies and candidates.

Commissioners to Meet Thursday to Check on Returns

Beaverhead county board of commissioners will meet as a board of canvass to verify final returns from all precincts and confirm the official tally of yesterday's general election. Beaverhead is among the first counties to report in the state, while the board continues its regular monthly session this week.
