Herman Peterson of the Dillon Gun club placed second in the 500 Bird All Around event at Orleans, a standout shoot of the year. He also took first in skeet and tied in handicap and flyer events, capping a strong performance at the big annual meet.
Robbers broke into the Circle cafe between 3 and 6 a.m. and fled with $80 from tills. Entry was via an air vent at the rear coal shed. Police have clues and have alerted neighboring towns. Beaverhead county offers a $25 reward for a separate Oct 19 Dillon Laundry burglary theft of $250.
Beaverhead county prepares for its Red Cross annual roll call starting Armistice Day with Rev. H N Tragitt as county chairman and helpers R M Stone and Mrs W B Hartwig. The drive runs through Thanksgiving with community chairmen named in all sections and Dillon to conduct its usual personal canvass. Funeral details note Spot Gibson found dead at his Kent addition cabin from a stomach ailment after a day out in Dillon.
Beaverhead county home demonstration club leaders gathered at the federal building for a training session directed by Lillian Stone the county agent. About twenty leaders attended as Miss Stone taught Swedish darning and weaving with participants from Dillon Wisdom Wise River Birch Creek Jackson Armstead and other communities.
Beaverhead county youths may enroll in Montana State College winter short courses in agriculture running January 4 to March 15. Principal J O Tretsven and county agent Bernard Williams say the program targets young men seeking practical farming and ranch management instruction with heavy lab work and less classroom theory. The courses fit those unable to attend a full four year college.
Beaverhead county 4-H clubs held their annual Achievement day with a style revue and prizes. Mary Liggett won first in her division and overall show, with Gertude Knox second. certificates and pins were awarded to Marcheta McMenommey and Fujko Mori. The gathering featured a nationwide 4-H radio program and group reorganization for the coming year.
The Public Service Commission ruled that service stations in Montana must post gasoline and other petroleum product prices on at least two analysis charts. Horace Casey, railroad commissioner, noted the law has long existed but was never enforced.
Dillon music lovers enjoyed a performance by the Chamber Orchestra of the United States led by Mr. Gillette. The Hammond organ blended with the ensemble, Miss Martineau ranked among the nation’s top violinists, and Gillette’s composition Paragraphs from a Friend's Diary offered tone poems of notable beauty.
Laura Tolman Scott a noted Beaverhead historian, author on Lewis and Clark, and state DAR historical sites chair, died after weeks of illness at Armstead. Born August 6, 1857 in New Hampshire, she helped mark Beaverhead sites including Sacajawea monument and the Lewis and Clark camp locations, and helped locate the Two Forks cache near Armstead. She and husband J W Scott moved to Red Rock valley in 1883 and remained active in the community.
Dillon observes National Education Week with events to highlight local schools. The program opened with union services at Grace Methodist Church led by Rev. H. N. Tragitt and featured St. James Episcopal Church parishioners and a quartet. Students distributed education pamphlets to parents and planned an open house at the training school Friday.
Beaverhead post of the American Legion will headline Armistice Day activities in Dillon with veterans from nearly every Beaverhead County section gathering to honor former comrades.
Missoula's Royal Mann, district governor of Rotary International, spoke at the Dillon club Monday night after touring 17 Montana clubs. He noted Rotary's 4500 clubs worldwide and its non sectarian creed with secretariats in London Zurich and Singapore. A post dinner briefing followed with board and committee chairs as three high school pupils presented a carnival skit.
The sequence begins with two band selections by the High School Band under L. A. Gregory at 10:00 and 10:10, followed by a formal opening with America and a standing audience. Rev. W. J. Loar offers the invocation, Dr. W. H. Stephan conducts songs with Ralph McFadden, Rush Jordan from the Normal College gives an address, and Joe Wedum remarks on the Eleventh Hour with a one minute silence before taps led by Mr. Gregory and the Star Spangled Banner to close.
Residents from Beaverhead Madison and Jefferson counties met in Twin Bridges on Wednesday night to organize a tri county good roads association. The group aims to coordinate road improvements and secure funding across the three counties.
Ralph McFadden, piano instructor at the Normal College, was chosen by the Butte Piano Ensemble as director. The group, organized by John Crowder of the University of Montana, is Montana’s largest piano ensemble with sixteen pianists on eight pianos. Rehearsals occur Wednesdays at Dreibelbis Music Store with plans for a spring concert.

A telegram signed by 55 Dillon men to Senator Burton Wheeler last spring is cited in this week’s Saturday Evening Post. The wire condemns Wheeler for opposing President Roosevelt’s court plan and accuses him of collusion with prominent figures such as Hoover Mills Mellon and Morgan.
Warren Gardner and Dale Wolfe, Idaho Falls youths, are jailed on second degree burglary charges for allegedly stealing several guns and ammunition from the Oregon Short Line bunkhouse at Red Rock. A tele scopic sight on a rifle helped a witness identify the license plate, leading to their arrest after a pursuit and a cache of stolen weapons found nearby.
Montana clubs urged a reopening of the duck season after closures last Sunday. Wires sent to Ira Gabrielson, chief of the biological survey, and Montana state game warden James A. Weaver, who asked for an extension of about 20 days to allow flight shooting and improve duck stamp sales.
Chanticleers voted seven new pledges at their regular meeting. The new members are Mary Collins Irma Honkala Nene Jackson Bernell Livengood Lucille Ohlenkamp Lucille Peck and Helen Randolph Initiation is set for Monday November 15 at the home of President and Mrs Sheldon E Davis The committee leading the event includes Barbara Schofield Eleanor Barney and Tressa Eckert Janet Smith and Ethel Kennedy were assigned to prepare pledge cards for presentation on November 10.
State highway patrol warned motorists to stop when approaching school buses discharging or receiving children or face arrest. Violations causing death are charged as manslaughter. three arrests under the statute have already been made this fall.
