Beaverhead county launches a chinchilla industry with Montana's first chinchilla farm at Roy Forrester fur farm north of Dillon. Thirteen pairs were bought by twelve Dillon men this year, five pairs arrived July starting stock valued at 16000 dollars, yielding 6400 dollars from chinchillas born on the farm.
Beaver head home demonstration clubs convene Friday at 10 in the federal building under Lillian Stone. Training centers on Swedish weaving and darning with most clubs represented in the meeting.
Dillon Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts with Cubs and Brownies and parents attended united services at First Baptist church closing the Girl Scouts silver jubilee observance. Speakers John Carr Dougan Luebben Dorothy Ann Davis shared jamboree encampment experiences.
Dillon will mark National Education Week from November 7 to 13 with daily activities announced by E. L. Fairbanks. Ministers will acknowledge the week in sermons. students will study Horace Mann writings. open house invites will connect families with schools. Armistice Day programs involve fourth and fifth graders. upper grades attend patriotic services at Hartwig Theatre.
The Armstead Roselle cabins dining room and bar opened last Saturday night with over 500 attending. Free dancing and supper were features as manager Loanna Robinson noted. Soil and hay samples from Big Hole basin were taken for analysis by Montana State College staff and County Agent Bernard Williams.
George Bruce Scott of Dillon and Miss Ada Waldemar of Grant married in Dubois Idaho with Probate Judge William A Patt officiating. Attendants were Mr and Mrs Ralph Waldemar.
Beaverhead post of the American Legion schedules a full Armistice day program on November 11. Highlights include Hartwig theatre patriotic exercises with the high school band under L A Gregory, a six man football game between Beaverhead and Philipsburg, an ex service banquet at the Andrus hotel, and a Legion dugout in the hotel basement.
The Wisdom Women's club sponsored a witches and goblins fun fest at the Masonic building doors opening 8 p.m. The hall glowed with Halloween colors as a crowd enjoyed games and booths hosted by Don Anson and Har, with reports continuing on page 4.
The Beaverhead high school assembly featured a "Baby's First Word" skit by freshmen and sophomores to promote a coming carnival. Elaine Tschacke read "The Passing of the Swan" and Nadine Kuss performed the Mexican Hat Dance, with Freces McPhail and Bernice Erickson offering accordion and piano solos and Louise Davison singing two numbers.
B L Chism, longtime Union Pacific veteran with 31 years service, arrives in Dillon to assume the Oregon Short Line agent post succeeding H B Baumberger who retired. Chism, previously agent at Preston Idaho for 18 years, began with Union Pacific in 1906. He is joined by his wife and six children now enrolled in local schools.
Larry French famed Chicago Cub pitcher and NL star visited Dillon on Monday. He traveled with Bob Johnson former Athletics star and Cubs coach while hunting deer and elk before their car stalled near the river bridge north of Dillon.
Beaverhead county residents are urged to have brakes and lights checked in coming days. State highway patrol will survey vehicles in the area and drivers with defects face court summons. Patrolman Wright reports 12 summons issued last week for improper rights center line driving and license plate violations.
A large social event marked the house warming of Mr and Mrs John Dooling at their new ranch home in Wisdom. The timber constructed residence features rustic interior details, modern kitchen and baths, three fireplaces and a basement laundry and garage. Guests arrived through the afternoon with a barbecue supper around a campfire and impromptu singing, followed by viewing and praise of the home.
Chinese pheasants opened the season with a countywide opening shoot. Many hunters reported success with limits on day one while some saw few birds. Earl L. Wheat led early returns with three pheasants and three ducks. Snow aided deer hunters briefly before melting.
Gargoyle club sponsor Miss Myrtle Savidge announced several casts for Gargoyle Night shows. Casts list includes Marcella Jones Bernice Erickson Ellen Schultz Barbara Schofield William Boetticher John Stevens Milo Long Winifred Lanagan Alma Olsen James Brockbank with roles still to be filled.
Beaverhead county educators attended Montana Education Association district meetings in Butte Great Falls Miles City and Kalispell last week causing schools to close and the high school to suspend Thursday. Conrad O Orr of Beaverhead County High School was elected first vice president of the district.
Local Red Cross workers convened to plan the annual roll call opening Armistice Day and running through Thanksgiving Day. Rev. H N Tragitt named chair, two vice chairs to assist city and rural areas. Dr Lee R Light succeeds T E Luebben as county chair. Virgil M Jams from St Louis branch aids. Mrs W B Hartwig leads Dillon drive. R M Stone directs other sections.
Prof. Rush Jordan of Montana State Normal College spoke at the Dillon Rotary Club dinner Monday night. He described the American frontier spirit as a belief in individual rights, privileges and opportunities and stressed its role in shaping the national character.
Dillon residents report unprecedented late blooms with sweet peas and hardy flowers surviving until Nov 1 in sheltered spots. Heavy frost Sunday night ended the streak. Dandelions were picked as people feared a tough spring from pests, while ranchers worry about dry soils and needed moisture before severe cold.
On November 1 the Art Club welcomed Isabel Kearney Marguerite Sorg and Blanche McManus into its organization. After the ritual the group gathered for cider and doughnuts and discussed art interviews with faculty stressing art appreciation in daily life. The Halloween decor impressed with a clever blend of natural and artificial materials.
Otto T. Vandegrift was announced yesterday as the new manager of Union Electric, succeeding L. K. Adams who resigned after 17 years with the company. Adams recently left on a motor trip to western states.
Mrs. Melinda Clark and Anton Dykstra of Idaho Falls wed last Friday with Judge Louis Stahl officiating. Clark's son Willard Clark married Miss Fafinie Hendricks of Idaho Falls with Mrs Clark and attendants present.
