Jesuit Helped Make History in Western Montana
Father Lawrence Palladino chronicled early Flathead life and the first contact with white settlers. The Flatheads, about 2000 strong, allied with Nez Perce, spoke a Kalispell tongue, and faced Blackfeet foes with beaver myths and sacred medicine. Ignace la Mouse urged missions, leading to 1831 1835 journeys and martyrdoms near Ash Hollow before renewed appeals to St. Louis.

Excess Wheat Penalty Faces Early Removal
Senate agriculture committee backs removing about 49 cents per bushel penalty on excess wheat for farmers with short crops. House already passed. Roosevelt vetoed a similar rider weeks ago. The measure would allow marketing up to normal production from allotted acreage without penalty even if some comes from excess acreage. Senators say it helps winter wheat growers with low yields.
