Civic and fraternal groups gathered Friday evening as C A Bechler detailed Beaverhead park plans. More than $2,000 raised for land and equipment, with a proposed layout by engineer C L Dodge. A future committee will finalize development and fencing.
Bids on the 1941 Beaverhead Wool pool will open at 10:00 a.m. Saturday May 31 at the office of County Agent Bernard Williams. Thirty nine consignors total 7400 fleeces with the largest consignor at 900. A dollar per fleece down payment will be paid upon bid acceptance. The board may reject any or all bids. John Albers, secretary, announced after last Saturday’s directors meeting.
Berlin Gordon has come back from the Panama Canal Zone where he worked for the Federal Bureau of Public Roads on a highway parallel to the canal.
Fishermen recount tall tales in Dillon from Beaverhead county trout rumors to limits near the city. The season opens Sunday at 5:00 a.m. and runs to Nov 16 at 9:30 p.m. with specific stream and lake closures and open dates noted for Armstead, Red Rock lakes, Browns lake, and Elk creek.
Work on a new one story brick building between the state liquor store and the Examiner is rapidly progressing. It will house a bowling alley operated by D. W. Paddock and Russell Smith. cement work was delayed by rain but excavation and foundation are finished. This marks the first new business construction in Dillon in the past year while residential building has boomed.
Training school commencement will be held tomorrow at 2 00 p m with 33 graduates receiving eighth grade diplomas. The program includes the play The Land of Liberty written and produced by eighth graders, musical performances by Ruth Eklund and Douglas Wagg, and instrumental solos by La Ren Cobb Pauline Lucier and Marjorie Decker. Superintendent Paul Anderson will present the class and A F Waldorf will award the diplomas. Reverend W G Lewis will give the benediction and the orchestra will lead the national anthem followed by the recessional. Graduates include Ethel M Anderson Margaret L Banks Wallace H Best Dorothy Ann Boka and many others.
Montana Experiment Station researchers at Bozeman join Irving and Cottom in Dillon to trial a mercury lamp fluorescence method for detecting bacterial ring rot in seed potatoes. The old Gram-stain method remains in use but the new approach aims to save time and money for growers. Field trials will run this summer to compare the two detection methods.
Don Gilbert son of Mr and Mrs W G Gilbert left Friday for Missoula to join the U S Army Air Corps after passing the Flying Cadet board in February at Butte He will report to Palo Alto field Kings California for training and was accompanied to Missoula by his brother Wilbur Jr
Dillon merchants remind shoppers Friday is a national holiday and all stores and offices will close. The American Legion Memorial Day program is set for 7 30 Thursday evening at Mountain View Cemetery.
College commencement week in Dillon features a junior prom at the gym, baccalaureate at 11:00 a m with Dr Sheldon E Davis, a graduation dinner at the residence hall, a June 2 play Mr Pim Passes By, June 3 art exhibit and music night, campus tea June 4, and a Thursday 10:00 a m commencement with Lowell W Johnson delivering The Almighty Dollar address. Eight degrees and 64 graduates are listed.
Kiwanis sponsors a Beaverhead 4 H show and sale with prizes on display at the Chamber of Commerce window. A $20 cash fund will be divided among top calf divisions judged on Danish market grades prime to medium. Roscoe Cornell Sr offers a $5 prize with qualifying requirements outlined.
Representatives from Beaverhead communities laid out polling sites and hours for next Saturday's wheat marketing quota vote. Reichle Farmers Union hall 11 am to 4 pm with Ferguson Taylor Joy. Dell hotel 1 pm to 6 pm with Kennison Reeder Hansen. Dillon City Hall 10 am to 8 pm with Rebich Benson Thompson. Any grower producing at least 200 bushels annually may vote and voters need not vote in their own precinct. Farmers and ranchers attending the 4 H show may cast ballots in Dillon.
The comedy drama Mr Pim Passes By by A A Milne will be staged at 8 15 Monday June 2 as the annual commencement play directed by Myrtle Savidge. Cast includes Alice Cameron Lyman Haverfield Lyda McCleery Andrew Pickorick Juanita Hieronymus Maurice Hickey and Gladys Mosby with college orchestra providing musical accompaniment.
Beaverhead County Selective Service board on Monday adopted a ruling altering induction dates from June 5 to June 16 for six local men. Transfers inducted elsewhere will now be credited to the home board, affecting planned departures including John Kelly Ogden Joseph Loomis John Olson Louis Higgins Earl Knutson Edward Larson and five of six others: Carl Swanson Ervin Dumpke Myrel Flohr Donald Marx Alfred Rider and Albert Bartkoske. Carl D Ankrum volunteered and is likely among the five chosen for June 16 induction.
Coach Bill Straugh and eight members of the 12 man track team that won the small college track conference championship were guests of the Rotary club at a regular dinner meeting. The roster included Tom Pierce James Kipp Ed Schultz Sam Pollard Bill McKeavor George Aitken Ray Schultz and Charles Sckulich.
Jupiter Pluvius has been generous with rainfall in Beaver head area in May totaling 2.79 inches. .93 inches fell over the weekend adding to hazards on rural roads. Forest and stockmen welcome the prospect of good water tables for the coming season reducing fire danger.
Nellie Little Poole presents her piano pupils in a recital at Swede's Hall Melrose this evening. The program titled The Last Rehearsal draws friends and relatives of the students to attend in support of the young performers.
Mr and Mrs Glen Lund of Whitehall have moved to Dillon to establish a new residence.
A sequence of mishaps plagues Dillon and vicinity with several wrecks and injuries. Rufus Woods suffered pelvic injuries when his car left the road near Melrose and overturned, and Jack Rogan damaged a car in a separate crash with no serious injuries. Gloria Good, daughter of Mr and Mrs R S Good, nearly drowned at the R M Gregg farm when swept by the mill race, but was pulled to safety.
Fishermen on the Big Hole river bank near Melrose found Walter Schussler a 60 year old music teacher from Butte dead. Sheriff Tem ple and Coroner Schwartz concluded the death was suicide from a .22 caliber revolver wound, noting he had likely been dead about two weeks.
F. J. Kelly of Dillon employed at the Ermont mine married Vergie Berry of Portman Mont at the courthouse last Saturday. Justice of the Peace George Opp performed the ceremony.
Herman Peter son tops the field by breaking 99x100 in the singles event at the Portland meet. He aims to defend the Montana singles crown at Dillon next month, showing serious intent with a trim training schedule.
