Don Anson Speaks On Legislation At Rotary Meeting

Rep Don E Anson praised the 1941 Montana legislature for economy and restraint while noting no new taxes and revenues meeting estimates. The Dillon Gun club, now chartered by the National Rifle Association, led the Montana Standard Telegraphic shoot with six shooters scoring perfect 25s. Members W. E. Montana State Normal College to switch to semester system

Montana State Normal College will abandon the quarter plan and start a semester basis with the fall term opening September 22. Records for current students will stay in quarter credits, while new students will be graded under the semester system. Fees remain mostly unchanged, paid in two installments, and textbook expenses will be lower due to the switch.

Post Office to Be Renovated

A complete renovation of the post office grounds and interior began Tuesday with hedge planting along the sidewalk. Amur River Privet forms the hedge while cottonwoods in the parking strip are replaced by ash trees after a large tree was blown over near the library injuring a car. The interior will be repainted and redecorated.

Poppy Sale Saturday Aids Veterans in Dillon

Saturday May 24 marks Poppy Day in Dillon with memorial poppies crafted by veterans at Fort Harrison hospital Helena for sale by Legion auxiliary and junior auxiliary members. Beaverhead county chairmen include Mrs. McMannis Lima and others aiding the drive. Funds support veteran rehabilitation and families of veterans. Poster contest winners were Paul Lacry Pat Curry Dorothy Ames Miriam Morse and Mary Lou Nelson with monetary prizes.

Reckless Driving Costs Trucker Ten Dollar Fine

Eldon Myers a Salt Lake City truck driver pleaded guilty to reckless driving in justice court after a Saturday accident near Daly's Spur that broke the leg of Pat Laden’s cow. Justice George Opp fined Myers ten dollars. Laden was moving cattle to the Sage Creek summer range.

Civil government quiz at Rotary meeting questions and answers

At a Rotary meeting on Monday April 28 Paul Anderson led a civil government quiz. Teams captained by Frank Tyre and H M Brundage scored 119 and 72 points respectively, with a list of 19 questions and answers provided by Anderson, covering local government duties, salaries, and public offices in Dillon and surrounding areas.

Memorial Day Services Set For May 29 At Mountain View

Memorial day observance is scheduled for Thursday May 29 at 7 30 pm at the American Legion plot in Mountain View cemetery. George M Melton will deliver the address as part of the Legion ritual preceded by flag decorating and wreath presentation for Legionnaires. A band directed by L A Gregory will provide music.

Grade School Graduation May 29

Graduation exercises for the training school will be held on Thursday May 29 at 2 00 pm. The eighth grade students under Anne Feley will present a patriotic play Land of Liberty which they have written themselves. The program will also include music and the awarding of diplomas.

Harlan Harrison and Helen Burns Married in Crow Agency

Harlan Harrison son of Mrs. H. L. Harrison and brother of Bob Harrison of Dillon wed Miss Helen Burns Sunday in Crow Agency Montana at the Catholic church. Harrison a Beaverhead county high school graduate class of 1934 and former Normal college attendee has taught at the Agency for the past year and finished the term last Friday. They will spend several days in Dillon before leaving for Salt Lake City.

Beaverhead Students Shine in Missoula Inter Scholastic Meet

Beaverhead county high school sent about 35 students to the annual interscholastic competition at Missoula. The Beaver weekly, judged superior, featured in state wide results. Debaters Louis Schmittroth J W McCracken Dorothy Davis Evelyn Gregg and John Bowring reached the semi finals. Golfer John Wenger placed 15th of 49. Don Smith advanced to finals in extemporaneous speaking. June Johnson excelled in declamation and Betty Barry reached tennis semi finals. The group left Wednesday afternoon and returned Friday evening.

Citizenship Day Honors New Voters in Dillon Parade

Citizenship day was observed in Dillon with a 7 30 parade led by American Legion color guards and a 8 00 program at the high school auditorium. Albert Anderson of the Montana Supreme Court delivered the main address as the Beaverhead Bar association sponsored the event. District Judge H G Rodgers chaired the day with T F McFadden as citizenship program chairman. Sen T E Gilbert served as master of ceremonies and Paul Anderson conducted patriotic singing.

Dodge Named Engineer for Anaconda Copper Co.

Clinton L. Dodge, long based in Dillon, moved to Butte to take a post as construction engineer and engineering analyst with Anaconda Copper Co. Mrs. Dodge and Everett stay in Dillon through term end, with plans to join him in June. Their son Ted remains employed in Dillon at Montana Auto Supply Co.

Beaverhead Livestock Men Set May Meeting Program

W G Gilbert of the Montana Woolgrowers Association will preside at Beaverhead county livestock men’s annual meeting on Saturday May 31. Calf show opens at 10 am, judging by the Danish system, followed by a 2 pm gathering with talks on beef cattle wool and lamb outlooks and livestock legislation review.

Montana Power plans personal visits to every customer in its Butte division to explain the latest rate reduction of 339000 dollars and how to maximize electric use. Company officials say the rate cut lowers costs for homes, stores, offices and small factories and will be explained in ninety day visits by trained staff.

Bagley School Band Concert to Feature Soloists and Chorus

The Bagley school department of instrumental music directed by L A Gregory presents a band concert next Monday at 8 15 p m. soloists include Robert Wolf Verna Davis Mary Connelley Marilynn Routledge Bunny Jackson Dorothy Tyre Vera Sargent Bruce Grimes Lou Sage Ned Hatton and others. Weather data from the Dillon college station shows May precipitation at 1.7 inches. A Sunday snow measured 7 inches with 92 inch notables, while Monday morning dipped to 22 degrees causing damage to gardens and alfalfa as May’s high reached 83 degrees.

Irene Megquire Married in Yuma Arizona

Irene Megquire daughter of Mayor and Mrs Bert Megquire married Allen Ficery of Los Angeles on April 5 in Yuma Arizona. She is a Beaverhead County High School Class of 1937 graduate and Kinman Business University alumna who worked in Spokane and later in Broadway Los Angeles. Ficery is an adjuster for a Los Angeles insurance firm. They will reside at 232 Union Place Los Angeles.
