Eight Degrees Diplomas to Be Awarded at Montana College

A Montana State Normal College commencement will award eight bachelor of education degrees and 64 two year diplomas in a ceremony tomorrow at 10. The Little Symphony will perform. Lowell W. Johnson will give the address The Almighty Dollar. Pres. Sheldon E. Davis will confer the degrees and diplomas. Discovery of Bones Solves Old Mystery

A 13 year old missing person case is closed as Frank Weber a 70 year old German miner is found dead in an old Grasshopper creek mine tunnel below Bannack. C Wall of Ralph E. Davis syndicate uncovered the skeleton with a rusty .22 nearby and Coroner Raymond Schwartz rules death by self inflicted gunshot. Weber vanished after a Bannack trip to buy groceries from his Hans Anderson ranch cabin.

Dillon Scout Camp offers funds for eligible Girl Scouts

Dillon Girl Scouts attending Camp Castle Rock between July 13 and August 10 may receive $2 toward expenses if they are intermediate scouts for at least one year and attend 85 percent of meetings. Applicants must have saved or earned $2 and parents provide transport. Reservations with Mrs. Fred Kerr must be made before June 7. Brownies are ineligible.

President of State Home Speaks At Rotary Dinner

Pres George H. Davey of the State Orphans home at Twin Bridges spoke at the weekly Rotary dinner. The home houses 300 children nearly evenly split by sex, funded by the state with minimal parental contributions. Davey described the home’s school, policies, and post release paths, noting most youths enter agricultural communities and many join CCC or the Navy.

Services for Infant Patrick Roberts Held in Dillon

Funeral services were conducted for Patrick Roberts three year old son of Mr and Mrs Jesse Roberts of Dillon. The infant drowned in the Union irrigation canal around 5 pm Thursday. Rev Belle Long led the Brundage chapel rites after which his body was recovered about 8 pm once the canal was drained. Coroner Raymond Schwartz said no inquest would be held. He was born in Nevada on March 5 1938 and is survived by his parents a brother Charles two sisters Ruth and Gertrude and his grandparents.

Thirty one Get Red Cross First Aid Certificates

The eighth grade graduation ceremonies at the training school included awarding Red Cross junior first aid certificates to 31 graduating members. Recipients include Russell Brown, Dick Hansen, Morgan Lewis, Dean Nelson and others.

School For Leaders Is Held Here

A home demonstration leaders training school was held Tuesday May 27 from 10 30 a m to 3 30 p m in the home economics department of Beaverhead county high school with Miss Bessie McClelland state foods and nutrition specialist of Montana State college in charge Twenty three leaders from 12 groups attended focusing on discussion and demonstration of simple desserts and their place in the diet.

Record breaking crowd at calf show and sale Saturday

Sealed bids opened for Beaverhead wool pool of 1900 fleeces with allotment to Arthur Ward of Helena for Forte Dupee Sawyer Co Boston. Pool sold for 37.5 cents a fleece, the highest Beaverhead county price this year, with 85 to 90 percent of wool already sold. The winning bid may be Montana’s largest pool offer this spring. payment plans call for one dollar per fleece down, rest at delivery. Forty nine small flock owners gain from the pool. Ranging from a few dozen to 900 fleeces each, the consignments formed the pool. Dillon Gun Club started a clean-up campaign at the grounds on Tuesday.

A record crowd attended the Beaverhead county 4 H livestock show on Saturday as 19 calves were shown. Fourteen sold at auction to raise funds for 4 H club activities with awards totaling, including grand champion Rainbow shown by Jim Hartwig earning $5 in merchandise. Reserve champion Blocky owned by Billy Harrison sold for $136.60.

Coast Man Is Held for Check Fraud

Ralph Owen an itinerant from San Diego was arrested Tuesday May 27 and jailed in Beaverhead County on forgery charges. He allegedly passed a $15 check at a Gooding Idaho bank then cashed another at a Pocatello lodging house after a ride from Idaho Falls to Dillon in a Model A Ford. Sheriff deputies tracked him to Moose Creek hill on highway 91 after the proprietor questioned the second check. No hearing is set.

Old Campaigner Will Serve in Third War

Jack St. Clair of the 19th Battery RFA signal corps Woolwich London was in Dillon en route to Canada to offer his services for a third hitch. He fought in the Boer War under Baden-Powell and in World War I under Rawlinson and Allenby, later serving against the Turks between Port Said and Jerusalem. He left England in 1932 to join the counting divisions division.

Postmaster of Early Days Dies In Bedford Va

John Weightman 85, early freighter mailman and postmaster, died in Bedford Virginia on May 13. He came to Dillon in 1875 and was appointed postmaster in 1881 by President Chester A Arthur. Survived by three daughters M J Salsman Big Fork Frank Worden Missoula and Walter Bond Los Angeles.
