Rural pupils earn final grades amid sparse July primary turnout

Co. Superintendent Christine Opp released rural county results noting eighth grade diplomas for top graduates Betty Jo Poole and Carol Johnson, with others listed by district. The report also names seventh grade geography and hygiene completers across Wise River, Armstead, Polaris and other districts.

Montana playwright Robert Finch to teach at M S N C

Robert Finch, noted Montana playwright and actor, will conduct a summer school class in playwriting at M S N C. He has Yale Drama School training, UNC affiliations, and Rockefeller and National Theater fellowships, with a June 1 school pageant at the Normal college.

Eagles Conduct Ellis B. Pruitt Rites Wednesday

A funeral service for Ellis B. Pruitt was held at the Brundage chapel with Dillon Aerie No. 2865 Fraternal Order of Eagles officers officiating. Officers included Worthy President Al Ward Jr and others. pallbearers named Arnold McKinnon, Maccoonally, Louis Thompson, Ben Hart, L W Frederickson, and Frank Tucker. Interment followed at Mountain View Cemetery.

Beaverhead County Primary Registration Delays Cited

Beaverhead county registration for the July 20 primary shows 2 960 electors to date, with 94 additions and 24 cancellations since February 9 1948. In 1946 qualified electors totaled 3 174, 214 more than current. County Clerk Margaret Thompson urges eligible voters who did not vote in the last general election or voted elsewhere to register now to avoid a rush before June 19 filing for county offices and June 9 for state offices. Eleven candidates have filed. John W. Miller of Monida filed Tuesday for county commissioner district No 2 as a Republican.

The fifty seventh annual commencement at Beaverhead County High School filled the auditorium as 48 graduates received diplomas. The program opened with a student orchestra processional and an invocation by Rev. Lewis D. Smith. Salutatory by Winbel McMannis, alumni cup to Rosemary Lane, science award to Frank Merrell, geometry cup to Charles Hendren, music cups to Peggy Lou Sutherland and Hewitt Martinell, a vocal solo by Miss Sutherland, and remarks by the commencement speaker.

J H Dickey 85 Dies at Dillon Home

James H. Dickey 85 pioneer Montana merchant died Saturday at his Argenta street home after several weeks illness. Born July 30 1862 in Kirkwood Missouri he came west in 1884 to Evanston Wyoming then Rock Springs and Helena before settling in Dillon in 1888. He operated grocery stores in Dillon and other towns until retiring in 1938. He was a longtime Montana Mason with ties to Evanston Helena and Dillon lodges. Survived by sons James H Dickey Jr of Butte and Carl C Dickey of Garden City New York and daughter Beth Dickey Northfield Minnesota. Funeral Monday at Brundage chapel with Rev Lewis D Smith officiating. Interment Mountain View cemetery.

Howard Rundle Presented Post Commander's Badge

At the Lloyd Whipple post of Veterans of Foreign Wars regular meeting last Wednesday evening Howard Rundle received the post commander's badge. Hugh Simmons, the post’s present commander, made the presentation. Four new recruits were admitted to membership and a Dutch lunch followed the session.

State Normal Commencement Set for June 3 in Dillon

The fifty first annual commencement at Montana State Normal College will be held at 10 oclock Thursday morning June 3 in the auditorium with Tom J. Davis of Butte delivering the address Youth Looks Forward. The play The Invaders by Robert Finch directed by the author will be presented June 1 for Dillon audiences. The college sing is scheduled for 8 oclock Wednesday evening June 2 on campus.

Officers Named At Vet Meeting Here In One District

Ray Schilling of Butte was elected commander of Mining district No. 6 of the American Legion at the annual convention in Dillon. Other officers named include Harry Norton Sheridan vice commander and Fr Frank Warrington Butte national chaplain. Delegates came from multiple towns and a joint banquet preceded a dance with Sargent's orchestra.

Mrs Augusta Rody of Lima Dies After Brief Illness

Mrs Minnie Augusta Rody a Lima resident died in a Butte hospital after a brief illness. Funeral services were held at Lima Community Church with Rev James M Hunsinger officiating and interment in Lima Cemetery. Pallbearers included J R Sawyer and P C Mayberry. She was born in 1868 in Wisconsin and later lived in Great Falls Havre and Butte before settling near Lima with her husband Charles H Rody who died in 1938. Survived by son Gustav K Rody, daughter-in-law and two grandchildren, plus sisters and a brother. Mr and Mrs George Hallas of Billings attended.

Sportsmen's Meeting Saturday in Jackson

Beaverhead Sportsmen's club plans a Saturday night meeting at the 1.0.C.F. hall in Jackson starting at 8 oclock. A large delegation is expected from Wisdom and Dillon. Speakers include fish hatchery officials and wildlife leaders. Free admission with sound movies, dancing to live music, and a lunch. The club has 400 members and recently planted 24000 seven inch trouts in Beaverhead river.
