Home clubs map year’s program in Beaverhead county

Beaverhead county home demonstration club leaders met at a county council session in the Federal building to map their program for the year. Miss Nell McKnight of Dell presided as officers from the clubs attended the session reflecting broad participation. A continuation note appears on page 4.

Beaverhead High School to Hold Commencement Exercises

Fifty-three seniors will receive diplomas at Beaverhead County High School tomorrow night in the gym. Dr. Curtis Wilson of the Montana School of Mines will give the address. Valedictorian Patricia Gilbert and salutatorian Betty Jo Jeppson will speak. Principal Conrad O. Orr presents diplomas. R. M. Barrett awards them. Invocation by Rev. J. Meeke. Alumni Cup to outstanding senior chosen by Lew Brundage. Activities began with baccalaureate in the training school auditorium. The Rev. Father F. X. Lechner spoke. The district band and orchestra concert followed later.

Dillon Man Oscar Johnson Dies at 57

Oscar Johnson 57 lifelong Dillon resident died suddenly at his Dillon home from a heart attack. Born June 1880 on a ranch near Dillon city. Survived by brother A S Johnson sister Mrs R W Boone and several nieces and nephews. Funeral Saturday at Brundage chapel with Rev J A Meeke officiating. Interment Mountain View cemetery.

Poppies to be sold here next Saturday

Veterans urged to observe Poppy Day on May 29 by selling memorial poppies and wearing them in memory of World War I fallen. Beaverhead American Legion Commander T Lee McCracken called on all Legion members and other veterans to honor the war dead on the day.

Beaverhead Valuation Declines as Tax Base Shrinks

Senior rating at Beaverhead County High School places Patricia Gilbert as valedictorian with Betty Jo Jeppson as salutatorian. The Montana Taxpayers association reports county operation costs steady over ten years while the tax base falls about 25 percent, raising the general fund tax rate by that amount. In 1926 Montana's taxable valuation was 435,510,159 with total county taxes of 3,434,717. by 1936 valuation dropped by about 100 million though running costs remained similar. Memorial Eve Program at Mountain View Cemetery

Beaverhead Post No 20 American Legion presents a Memorial Eve program on Saturday May 29 1937 at 7 00 p m at Mountain View Cemetery. High School Band directed by L A Gregory chaplain Luther Smith Miss Bernice Metlen and T Lee McCracken lead in silent memory band salute to the dead taps and the lowering of the flag. Citizens are urged to attend.

Beaverhead Federation Hosts 31st Meeting at Wise River

The Wise River Women’s club hosted the Beaverhead County Federation of Women’s Clubs for its thirty first semi annual meeting on May 22 1937 at the Wise River school house presided by Mrs C W Francis with over thirty members present. A welcome by Mrs W C Jones and response by Miss Mary Cottrell followed a singing of America. Committees were named for credentials resolutions courtesy press program auditing and library service. A plan for summer activities included an Achievement day on June 25 1937 and a report by County Public Health Nurse Miss Luella Stickney.

Graduation Activities at Montana State Normal College

Commencement for the fortieth annual ceremony will be held June 9 in the college auditorium with Pres. Alfred Atkinson delivering the address. Activities begin May 28 with the senior dinner at Andrus grill, followed by the training school commencement on June 3 in the training school auditorium and the junior prom on June 5 in the college gymnasium. Baccalaureate services will be held Sunday.

Christensen Namedhead Association President in Beaverhead County

Arthur Christensen was elected president of the Beaverhead county high school students association in a spirited, close race last Friday. He defeated Don Wheat and Floyd Pahnish as candidates. Voters used many tactics while campaigning, and a full participation turnout occurred with 100 percent voting. Weldon Lees was written in for vice president, Ruth Deputy elected secretary, Frances Pickelick treasurer.

Arrangements Completed For State Trapshoot Next Week

The Dillon Country club unveils a four-tournament summer schedule led by a Montana State trapshoot set for June 4 to 6. An invitational opener drew about 25 golfers from Deer Lodge and Anaconda with practice nightly this week at new traps.

Don Anson from Wisdom visited the city on Thursday. He toured local sites and met residents during his brief stay.

Dentist Dr Curry Speaks at Dillon Rotary Dinner

Dr. R. D. Curry addressed the Dillon Rotary Club at the weekly dinner, discussing dentistry and the focal infection theory as a cause of systemic disease. He noted that clinical evidence links focal infection to several sources, with teeth and surrounding tissues among them.

Memorial Day Eve Program Set By American Legion

The American Legion will host a Memorial Eve program at Mountain View cemetery Saturday night to honor heroic dead from all wars as sunset ends the service. Legion committee members are C. J. Hovren Parke T. Scott and Walter Stamm. The event features the high school band directed by L A Gregory the Legion auxiliary and the Boy Scouts.

Normal winner Diamond title at state meet

Coach Kakuske's team dominated the conference championship defeating the Miners of Butte 22 to 4. They reached the finals by beating Polytechnic 17 to 3, while Mines beat Eastern Montana Normal 12 to 9. Ironman Schoonover pitched both games and limited the Miners to five hits as his teammates rapped 19 hits.

Girl Scouts Awarded At Dillon Court House Meeting

Awards were given to a number of Dillon Girl Scouts at a special meeting at the courthouse Monday night. Tenderfeet recipients include Annabel Georges and Lorraine Pierce. Second class honorees are Betty Barry Pat Curry Betty Lee Messinger Mary Spegar Betty Blythe Stephan and Mary Tait.

Junior baseball open season next Tuesday

Beaverhead post of the American Legion will officially open its junior baseball season next Tuesday. Emil Conger announced the two months schedule and ward teams with four squads. A committee will manage grounds and conduct, while captains were chosen and gear donations sought for boys lacking equipment.

Keith G Seidensticker stands accused of mail fraud involving multiple companies and aliases to deceive customers. The trial opens Monday in federal court Spokane with 50 witnesses from 17 states subpoenaed.

Elks Drum Corps Dance at Glen Saturday Night

The Dillon Elks drum and bugle corps hosts a community dance at Glen Saturday night with an exhibition during the evening. Music by the corps or orchestra. At a lodge meeting last night three candidates were initiated: John Selvidge Don Wilcox and Dave Williams. A committee was formed to arrange the annual flag day exercises set for June 14.
