A wartime appeal recounts a wounded soldier saved by Red Cross stretcher bearers and urges Beaverhead County to donate its $7,500 share of a $100,000,000 nationwide drive. The plea stresses the need to aid homeless children, devastated Europe victims, and troops returning home.
The Montana State Normal college lists a week of events May 22 to 29 for the twenty‑first annual commencement. Highlights include senior Sunday dinner, baccalaureate address by Rev. H G Humphrey, Alumni tea, vesper service, class day with Pow Wow, and commencement addressed by Superintendent W E Maddock of Butte. Several graduates are named with others expected in August.
Senator Selway, a major local wool producer, received a telegram from Lewis Penwell, Helena, chief of the war industries wool division. It states settlements occur when wool arrives at concentration points with 6 percent to growers, separate weighing and grading, a 3 to 3.5 percent commission not paid by the grower, advances up to 75 percent, and interest ceasing at May arrival. territory wools limited to under 1000 pounds. pamphlets with full details will be printed this week.
John Collins and T E Gilbert attorneys for Eph Stoller filed a $10 000 bond signed by twenty two prominent local citizens led by T J Mulany Ira Sanders John T Clay Charles Calvert Hans Anderson Albert Anderson W H Wilson A S Johnson H B Andrus F A Hazlebaker Chris Snyder Milton Nay Ross Nay A E Maine George F Dart George Ditty B W Emerick Ed Romain C H Phillips HE W Geary E B Roe and Herman Jackson.
The second Red Cross drive begins in the United States with a Dillon campaign at Dilmon t park drawing a large crowd for an opening dance. Senator E. Q. Selway leads Beaverhead county in the effort with Dr. M. A. Walker in Dillon coordinating local volunteers and a list of assistants. The county aims to raise 7500 dollars, with farmers urged to give acre profits and ranchers to contribute per head of livestock as the appeal urges everyone to subscribe.
Beaverhead county board met May 6 1918 appraising hail damages appointing bail insurance appraisers and budgeting road work. They discussed changing Big Hole Grasshopper road pending right of way, renewing liquor license protests against J Y Wade, and scheduling payments for county claims.
The Dillon Training School annual track and field event at the Normal on May 16 saw three records broken. Henry Wilcomb jumped 4 feet 3 inches surpassing Leslie Dodds 1913 mark by one inch. Arthur Harris cut Frank Pauls 1913 half mile record to 2 48, beating Wilcomb. Joe Butala won individual honors and shaved a fifth of a second from Rosenaud s 2 20 record.
The jury in Montana v Brooks found him guilty of obstructing the draft law by distributing I W W literature. Brooks and Frank Healy were arrested after Brooks gave the materials to Williams, who delivered them to the sheriff, triggering the case.
Jay W. Baker, county clerk and recorder, says no effort will be made to bring current France troops to vote in primaries and November, but registered electors in training may vote. He requests addresses of electors who have enlisted but have not received voting blanks so they can be sent to France.
Dr Grant E Finch superintendent of training at the Normal college will deliver the commencement address at the close of the Three Forks high school this week.
J. B. Flameing, local telephone exchange manager, suffered a severe accident yesterday afternoon when a strap failed while he worked atop a pole. He sustained broken wrists, back injuries, and shock. full extent of injuries is not yet known.
