The twenty first annual commencement week at the Normal College ended with morning exercises and a baccalaureate service. The Class of 1918 lists 59 graduates, including May finishers and August graduates, with a notable absence of male students this year.
A patriotic devotional program will be held on Decoration Day Thursday May 30 at 8 30 p m in the public school auditorium Major Gilbert will preside Hymns and patriotic songs will be sung by the audience Invocation by Rev Father Foley the president s proclamation read by Mrs F D Willis five minute talks by Attorney Harlow Pease and President J E Monroe Prayers will be offered by Rev R J Jensen and Rev H G Humphrey
The Highth Grade World, produced by eighth grade pupils of the public school, celebrates the school year with editorials Thrift Stamp sales and athletics. Beaverhead county furnishes eight stockmen for the war effort. Carl A Guntaffson John L Ericksen George M Johnson Clarence Barthelonew George E Martin John A Thompson and Ray Stanfield entrain June 1 for Camp Lee Petersburg Virginia to enter a training school and join the veterinary corps.
In a Camp Lewis letter Robert Waddell reports that local volunteers must strive to surpass a top tier draft cohort. He notes officers in training are in prime physical condition with strong military tactics.
Reports on Willard Jensen indicate he remains very weak after a vicious horse kick last week in Butte. An operation showed no vital organ injury and doctors say his recovery depends on his strong vitality and slow but steady improvement.
Austrian rancher John Kambich living near Glendale was arrested and brought to this city last week charged with threatening to kill Norris who resides near the Kambich property. He has faced similar charges previously due to disputes with neighbors.
The smaller valley schools are praised for their fine showing in the Pearl I. Smith spelling contest. The report, sent by county superintendent Miss Sutherland, is commended, and Mr. Smith is thanked for his efforts in organizing the event.
Wills, a resident of Butte, traveled to the city on business purposes. He was seen meeting local officials and discussing matters of interest to his hometown.
Beaverhead County surpasses its Red Cross quota by over $4,000, bringing county totals to above $11,000 with more gifts arriving. The drive lists numerous contributors including the Provost & Ripley firm, Libby and Masonic Lodge, and individual donors such as Esterwald, Mrs. and Misses across Beaverhead, with officials predicting the total may double.
The summer school starts Monday June 3 for grades First Second led by Miss Day Third Fourth led by Miss Macdonald seventh eighth led by Miss Dorchester and ungraded room supervised by Miss Hazard. Kindergarten begins Monday June 10 for eight weeks led by Miss Charlotte Gerrick with four to six year olds. The playground runs afternoons and evenings for six weeks and Miss Henry oversees physical culture. The program is free and aims to help students make up work.

Dr. W. H. Wilson, a Memphis horse and mule dealer, sold six registered Jacks in the city last week. Two were moved to Grasshopper by motor truck, fetching 1500 and 1000 dollars to J. C. Harrison and Guy Gray respectively. A top animal brought 1500 dollars to Mathews Peyre Girard of Kidd.
News arrives of Willard Jensen death at 1 45 PM in Murray hospital Butte. The body will be transported to Dillon tomorrow with funeral services planned for Friday.
Dr. E. RK. Mosher returned from Virginia City and Whitehall where he delivered commencement addresses at the high school exercises.
Bert J. Maemenemey of Armstead enlisted in the naval reserve and left on the 16th for Bremerton Washington to begin training. A farewell party was held at the McMenomey ranch with friends and relatives attending.
Captain Richmond P. Hobson spoke at the public school auditorium on The World War and the Great Destroyer urging universal prohibition and sober nations. He warned alcohol harms life reproduction and democracy, insisting America must lead a dry world to peace and liberty. He delivered a dramatic, fact filled address praised for eloquence and humor.
The eighth grade graduating exercises will be held this evening at 30 o'clock at the Training school auditorium. Graduates include Mildred Bourquin, Gerald Bostwick, Albert Baker, Frances Forsgren, Ruth Kent, Vashti Sanders, Clyde Webster, Evelyn Weenink, Annabel Desmond, Maureen Desmond, Holda Skalitzky, Ethel Skalitzky, and Lee Williams. The program features a chorus with Knitting and Khaki Bill, and Battle Hymn of the Republic. Admission is free. all are invited.
Judge Clark dismissed a personal damage suit by Mrs. Elizabeth Clark against merchant B. H. Paul after a lengthy district court proceeding with many witnesses. Carrie Gudici won against A. Summerhour, gaining possession of land and $497.78 in damages. George Gray, executor of the Haw estate, won against Dan Grant. A direct verdict favored plaintiff in Amanda Gulici v Dresher, granting land possession and $497.77 in damages in the Sweetwater district.
Ira Sanders of the Diamond O company announces a countywide Red Cross benefit dance and supper on Saturday night, June 1. The Diamond O will cover all expenses and donate proceeds to the Beaverhead chapter. A jazz orchestra will play. supper is served from 10 p.m. to breakfast. The event aims to be a major patriotic gathering with expected turnout from Dillon and Grasshopper region.
Wednesday evening members of the Prospect club held a picnic at Lover's Leap. The Junior class of the Normal college plus their professor Dr. G B Finch picnicked at Dilimont park.
Mr. H L Willis of Butte, a Delco Light dealer, visits Dillon's Hotel Andrus this week with O C Smith to demonstrate the Universal Gas Machine. The kerosene burner fits stoves and heaters and aims to save coal, with kerosene as a by product. Willis touts economy cleanliness and convenience of the device.
Beaverhead horses in top condition head to the Dillon Horse Sales Company sale set for June 5 and 6 at the new yards south of the stock yards. Over 1,000 head listed amid strong local and nationwide demand as ranchers push for haying and farm work, with buyers from eastern firms showing interest.
Harrison B Brown a Beaverhead county pioneer died in Long Beach California on Saturday afternoon of old age. His remains will arrive tomorrow and the funeral is set for 5 p.m. at the Episcopal church with Rev. R J Jensen officiating. Interment will be at Mountain View cemetery. He came to Beaverhead over 50 years ago near Horse Prairie, later lived in southern California, and is survived by few relatives with many friends in the county. He was about 90.
The June 1 moving day triggers a chain of relocations across Dillon as C. W. Hudson buys Judge Joe C. Smith’s residence on Pacific Street and tenants shift. Judge Smith moves into Reed Featherly’s former Reed Featherly moves to North Washington Street, Mrs. Courtney moves to Mr. Dool’s, and C. W. Hudson’s current home goes to Chas. Woodbourn. All anticipate settling by June 10.
Sergeant W R Braithwaite of the British recruiting mission in Spokane Washington visited in the past week to line up Canadian army recruits. He found most Brits enlisted but identified one remaining prospect, William Falsoner a Scotsman who joined the Canadian artillery.
