A playful weather gag leads to the postponement of the annual pageant at Montana State Normal College. The campus magnet, symbolically switching levers for Cold North Winds and Snow, signals the delay and references continued coverage on page 8.
Legion post will oversee Dillon's Memorial Day program to be held on May 20 at the Short Line depot lawn. Veterans of Civil War, Spanish American and World War will join in patriotic music and speakers as part of the ceremony. Delinquent tax deadlines extended due to Sunday date, with June 1 final payment for the second half of 1930 city and county taxes.
Ed Renfro of Dell, the world champion in bird shooting and famed scatter gun expert, will attend as honor guest at a Dillon Gun Club shoot this Sunday at the fairgrounds with a banquet to follow. Montana blue rock specialists, including Roy Forrester, will compete after attending Renfro’s honors event in Butte.
The ten mile section of the Dillon southward highway is being oiled with plant mix. Crews operate from the J C Maguire gravel camp six miles south of Dillon. The process mixes oil and gravel centrally then distributes it on the surface. Upon completion the camp moves toward Armstead for further eight mile oiling toward Red Rock. Work on the Butte Dillon highway has begun.
Butte and Anaconda Elks drum corps may stage an exhibition drill before Dillon Lodge No 1554 anniversary dance on Friday night May 29. Each corps has 35 members and may travel to Dillon for the event, with both planning to attend the Seattle national convention in July.
Beaverhead county high school senior Bill Ballard placed third in the boys division of a state declamation contest in Missoula. Winnie Emerick won the Blind Bogey tournament at Dillon Country Club with a nine hole score of 72 and lucky number 75. Glenna Vance and Hazel Baxter tied for low at 68. Refreshments followed as club officials hosted the event.
A Romanian ranch hand, unnamed at press time, killed himself with a head wound near Armstead this morning. Coroner James E. Philips and H. M. Brundagewent to Armstead. He had worked as a herder for Coy Brown at a reserve camp. body found near the camp wagon. Brown knew him only as Prank. no motive learned.
The Beaverhead Federation of Women’s Clubs holds its semi annual convention at Melrose next Saturday with state officers including Mrs Minnie Tennis of Butte and Mrs R E Brown of Bozeman in attendance. Noted speakers from Butte and Melrose will participate as part of an exceptional program.
The best work by training school pupils over the past year will be shown at the primary and old training school buildings next Friday. Parents can visit between 10 and 12 morning or 1 and 3 afternoon, with evening hours. A 7 pm program at the primary building and 7:30 pm at the old building will feature Intermediate and upper grade children. The primary exhibit opens at 7:30 and the old building display at 8:00.
Montana fishermen prepare for the annual opening of fishing season with plans to fish streams and lakes across the state. Beaverhead County waters are listed as closed year round in the Montana Wildlife report, with Decker rearing pond at Arm noted among restricted streams.
Eighth grade pupils will receive diplomas at commencement exercises of the Normal College Training School in the school auditorium Thursday afternoon May 28. Dr W H Stephan will deliver the address. The class will be presented by Superintendent Charles Henry and diplomas awarded by Leonard Eliel. The Rev F X Lechner will give the invocation and benediction. A musical program will be presented by the training school orchestra.
A series of burglaries and thefts were reported over recent days. An overnight break at Hartwig theatre opened the office door, cash drawer, receipts stolen, and burglars believed to be familiar with the building and possibly attended the show.
Beaverhead County spent 1506.84 on the highway debenture election. The vote total was small, raising cost per ballot, with figures compiled by Clerk Albert Baker. Personal receipts for the expenditure will be paid back.
An anchers meeting at Blacktail school discussed cut worms invading alfalfa fields south of Dillon. Bernard Williams said State college experts expect the pests to fade in 10 to 14 days unless crops suffer heavy damage prompting immediate poison treatment. No action was decided. outbreaks cover sizable areas but have not yet caused major losses.
Mr. and Mrs. J. Paul Houston of Oakland are guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Billers on the west side. They traveled by car to Dillon and plan to visit Helena before returning to California.
The Dillon Boy Scout fund drive shows strong progress though the goal is not yet met. Finance chairman Lambert Ellel says the community will likely subscribe enough to support next year’s activities. A $100 anonymous donation boosted contributions, said to come from a non–Scouts father active in the cause. At the court of honor Friday night, Bud Cashmore and Tom Holtz were raised to Star Scout, with Bill Bayerd, Everett Wedum achieving first class, and Roy Forrester, Arthur McFarland, and Lawrence Barry advancing as well.
Fifty nine seniors at Deaverhead County High School prepare for graduation exercises on Thursday night May 28. The class, among the largest in school history, attended an alumni dance at Dillmont Park last Friday. A commencement sermon will be delivered at the Methodist church next Sunday evening by Rev. H N Tragitt.
Several new courses will be offered during the nine weeks summer school under the four year curriculum. Advanced courses leading to a degree will supplement the regular two year diploma program. New instructors will join the faculty while most regular staff stay on.
The Salmon sportsmen's club of Salmon Idaho schedules its annual salmon bake for June 6. A day and night festival will feature a broad program celebrating the annual run with varied events and community participation.
The Dillon American Legion auxiliary plans a Poppy Day sale with flowers grown in Montana hospitals. Proceeds aid disabled veterans and most poppies are made by Fort Harrison veterans. Beaverhead County residents are noted for their usual generous response.
Montana State Normal's track squad finished third in the Montana Intercollegiate meet at Missoula last Saturday. State College and the university led, with Bill Wolverton earning a 6 feet 3 inches high jump second and Jenkins taking third in the low hurdles.
Junior high school pupils from both sexes enjoyed their annual outing last Friday evening at Dillmont Park. About fifty youngsters attended the picnic style event.
