Dillon residents visited Barrett hospital for National Hospital Day. Wives of hospital board members hosted tea in the parlors while 1926 babies born at the hospital received one dollar savings certificates from the State Bank and Trust Company.
In Beaverhead County the Pearl I Smith spelling contest awarded top prizes to Wisdom school for the highest average and Gibbons school for the second highest. All winners met the Ayres scale standard with 84 percent or better. The youngest certificate recipient was 6 year old Jane Stallings of Bannack. Bannack school had the highest average.
Mrs J H Gilbert of Dillon elected president of the Montana Parent Teachers association at the Helena state convention. Mrs A F Waldorf of Dillon chosen secretary. Delegates from Dillon reported to the Dillon P T A meeting. The new MT PTA president will go to Oakland for the national PTA convention and later to Los Angeles for the California PTA convention.
The Montana State Normal college plans its annual May fete on Tuesday evening on campus weather permitting. The event, run by the Women's Athletic association, features bleacher seating with tickets sold by W A A members and free seats for those without payment. The May queen and attendants are chosen by student vote, with coronation at the start and a program of frieze productions and dances to follow, ending with a narrative pageant.
The fishing season opens Saturday May 21 after a mistaken notice in last week. Anglers may not fish until dawn Saturday and must obtain licenses in Dillon before they ply rod and reel.
Beaverhead post veterans met Monday night at city hall to plan doubling membership by next Monday noon and to discuss Memorial day observances. Thirty plus ex service men attended as names were called to sign up by deadline, aiming to inform state headquarters of a 100 percent increase by Monday midnight.
Dillon's nine this season promises to be a winner as a meeting at the Dillon athletic field Monday night set plans in motion. Most of last summer's stars signified they will play again and new enthusiasts are ready to don uniforms, with games against outside teams likely.
A Dillon committee led by mayor Roscoe Cornell plans tourist camp maintenance and a campaign to promote the Dillon-Monida highway as the Montana south route. Members include B N Stevenson chairman Harry Andrus George Hopkins and Anson Baxter.
Beaverhead county high school contingent traveled to Missoula for the state track meet. Frank Little secured the lone local win with a second place in discus while other Beaverhead athletes Collected several near finishes. Coach B J Gunderson led the Beavers aided by editor Clara Sorenson and attending Dillon residents including Miss Gladys Scully Edwin Whitworth Albert S Baker and Dale Metlen.
Forty five students on the tentative graduate list will receive diplomas at the Beaverhead county high school commencement in the school auditorium next Thursday May 26 Prof Edmund L Freeman of the state university will give the address The senior class play The Arrival of Kitty opens commencement week Friday with cast including Art Stultz Alden Mast Clyde Sewell Dora Nelson Mildred Carlson Rosemary King Harold Cashmore Florence Nedrow and Ralph I Smith Baccalaureate at the Methodist church Sunday morning with Rev Howard B Ricketts The annual music concert is set for Monday evening An alumni banquet was canceled and a dance will be held at Dillmont park next Tuesday night with each alumni member allowed a guest
The Beaverhead Sportsmen's Association launches a membership drive this month to fund two additional rearing ponds after the Armstead pond's success. Officials note Beaverhead is becoming a top Montana fishing region and emphasize stocking streams to protect fry and cut initial costs while boosting local waters.
A special election will be held by School District No 10 covering Normal Training School and Dillon public school next Saturday afternoon. Voters will decide on increasing the district tax levy from 10 to 18 mills to retire outstanding warrants and fund further maintenance and operation. Polls open 1 to 6 p m at the junior high building of the training school.
The Wise River school wins the health poster exhibit and the silver cup for best general exhibit. Armstead takes second, Redrock third. top originality prizes go to Healthland from Wise River, Keep Your City Clean from Reichle, and Exercise from Bristow.
Brown's dude ranch at Elkhorn Springs will open its first season June 15 with manager Jack Brown stating preparations are near completion. Dillon reports indicate substantial improvements and a policy change at Southwestern Montana's popular resort, Elkhorn, ahead of the opening.
Montana State Normal and Montana School of Mines prepare for a first dual track meet next Friday and Saturday at Dillon athletic field. Both rival programs boast strong squads with the Teachers likely strong in distance and cross country, while the Miners promise tough competition in every event. The meet is expected to be close with all events shaping the final outcome.
Delegates from every county women's club gather in Dillon for the semi annual Beaverhead Federation of Women's Clubs convention. The program titled Back to the Home features a morning meeting, a luncheon, and sessions open to all women.
Beaverhead's first major rodeo of the year will be held May 29 at Wise River. Fred Gill leads the event with his well known backers, a string that last fall challenged the Sam Freeman champions. The program features broncho busting prizes, steer riding, calf roping, bareback riding, wild cow milking, and more, with free picnic grounds along the Big Hole River drawing many Dillon attendees.
Mrs. Ella Ripley beloved Dillon matron and wife of L B Ripley died at her home on South Atlantic street Saturday evening after a long illness. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Episcopal church yesterday with Rev Howard B Ricketts officiating and interment in Mountain View cemetery. She was born December 28 1867 in Newcomerstown Ohio and moved to Dillon in 1908 with her family.
The high school music department will present a Monday evening concert May 23 in the gymnasium as part of commencement week. The program features the band, girls glee club, instrumental soloists Kenneth Wheat Ashley Roberts and Ling Ling Wolf, and a violin quartet and trio.
