Libby Montana grew from a placer gold rush begun in 1885 led by Tom Shearer and B F Howard racing Jan Eisenberg and companions from Vermillion creek to Libby creek. The first town arose within Libby creek country, with early settlers building cabins and George Good opening a grocery in 1887. The Highwater and Buffalo Bill trails connected Libby to the wider Montana frontier.
