The Beaverhead county board met in regular session May 3 4 5 1937 with Commissioners Hartwig Jackson and Rife and Clerk Baker. Minutes from prior meetings were approved and bids for painting and staining the courthouse were opened and read, with Carson Brothers named for staining and lining work.
About 300 training school and college students prepare to perform in the Maynite pageant Toyland at the Montana State Normal College gymnasium next Friday. Cast includes clowns Dutch dolls jumpers and sailor dolls in a grand finale wedding of the Painted Doll with music from The Little Symphony orchestra and the Men’s Glee Club.
Mrs. C. M. Casterline was elected president of the Beaverhead unit American Legion auxiliary at Monday night’s regular meeting. Also chosen were Mrs. T. Callahan first vice president, Mrs. G. D. Combes second vice president, Mrs. T. Lee McCracken secretary-treasurer, Mrs. Sam Cardinale sergeant-at-arms, Mrs. Luther Smith historian, and Mrs. William Carroll chaplain. Winners of the Poppy day post.
Local officers continued a crackdown on drunken drivers with two more motorists arrested last week. Jake Estelle a Sweetwater rancher faced charges of driving while intoxicated and operating a car without headlights. He was fined 50 dollars and later fined 25 for driving with 1937 license plates. Mike Stager another rancher was arrested for driving without lights and intoxication and fined 25 dollars. Seven drunken driving arrests have occurred in two months.
Beaverhead county agricultural conservation committee members were elected with Jack Keenan as president and J C Ferguson as vice president. Bernard Williams is secretary and Dora Smith as treasurer. A Wisdom group formed to focus on range conservation with William Carroll as chairman and George Harrison as vice-chairman. Crested wheat grass and other varieties were seeded near Bloody Dick ranger station with cooperation from the county agent and forest service.
Two one act plays were staged this morning by the college class in play directing and advanced dramatic course members serving as student directors. Casts include Alta Wyne and Ameera Murray in Hearts and Blanche Johnson and Fay Sutton in Joint Owners in Spain with faculty input from Mrs. Russell Russell and Mrs. Edwin Puff among others. The report also notes Union Pacific shipments of livestock and hay from Beaverhead County from January to April with 75 percent going to drought districts and round trips charged at one fare for the journey.
Frank A. Hazelbaker, secretary treasurer of Beaverhead Madison and Twin Bridges national farm loan associations, joined district land bank officers in Spokane to discuss decentralizing operations. The two associations, with 236 stockholders and about 1.63 million dollars in mortgages, now directly make and service land bank loans and invest in the district bank. Members own about 89,660 dollars in voting stock, and the associations’ stake in the land bank is matched by stock purchases. The land bank bonds, at 3 percent, enable new first mortgage loans at a 4 percent rate with added security.
G W McMullin principal of Lima High School was elected president of the Beaverhead local. Ottilie Brauer critic teacher at the training school was named vice president and Evelyn Rimel Beaverhead County High School instructor became secretary at a Lima dinner meeting last Thursday night.
The Dillon Gun club, host to the Montana state trapshoot in early June, moves to Dillon Country Club grounds east of town for a registered shoot next Sunday at its new location adjacent to the country club.
Art Club members vote for affiliation with a national honorary fraternity Kappa Pi and a campus chapter will be established. Chapters exist at several universities including Kentucky Columbia Vanderbilt Purdue Ohio State and Chicago with members required to meet art and grade criteria and submit works for national exhibits.
The annual revue by the Clau dia Faust School of Dancing will be held on Thursday night at the training school auditorium. About 35 dancers will perform across various dances including a sequence portraying the hours of the day. Admission is free.
Mrs. C. W. Francis announces Beaverhead County Federation of Women's clubs will hold its semi annual meeting in Wise River on Saturday May 22 with the Wise River club as hostess. Program includes H S Mussigbrod on Club Institutes and Clara Regan on Gardening in High Altitudes.
Roy Forrester of Dillon outlined the birth and growth of local fur farming since 1926 with silver foxes. He cited eight fox ranches and a $75 000 annual pelt market, mink income of $11 000 this year, and the recent chinchilla venture with only four global farms and a new Dillon ranch starting up.
O. E. Gold received 15 days in the county jail after arraignment in Judge Stahl s court for shoplifting. Sheriff Temple Deputy Renfro and Chief Nelson arrested him Monday for stealing shirts from J C Penney Co. He was found hiding along Blacktail creek near the O S L depot. Dr W H Stephan won the blind bogey tournament at the Dillon Country club Sunday.
The Barrett hospital tea fundraiser will be held next Wednesday May 19 at the St James guild hall. Women from Dillon churches coordinate the event and pictures of babies born at the hospital will be exhibited. Proceeds fund needed equipment. Tea serves 3 to 5 p m.
I M Brandford administrator of the state department of public welfare lauded Beaverhead county for its excellent financial condition in a letter to the board of county commissioners received recently.
The Beaverhead high school senior class and eight orchestra members presented their play Say It With Flowers in Masonic hall on May 8. The Wisdom Women's club sponsored the event and praised the drama and music. Professor Orr spoke in support of the school and residents hope for an annual performance with a Wisdom orchestra providing music for a concluding dance.
The Dillon Elks lodge drum and bugle corps will debut publicly next Saturday night with a parade through the business district at 8 30 followed by a dance at 9 in the drum corps headquarters. Invitations go to neighboring lodges and refreshments will be served. Led by Kenneth Wheat the group aims to tour county communities to fund a potential trip to the state Elks convention in Red Lodge.
J L Shorty Hughes 63 a Texas county Missouri native and former Dillon resident died April 16 in a Boise Idaho hospital after about two years illness. He came west in 1891 arrived in Dillon in 1910 worked for Oregon Short Line candy store and restaurant operator on Idaho street later ran King chili parlor Idaho Falls since 1926. Surviving are two daughters Mrs Roy E Groh of Boise and Mrs L D Pardonnet Idaho Falls three grandchildren a sister Mrs Dick Van Bearcom and a brother Ed Hughes California.
