Commencement Week High School Scheduled

Carl Beardslee 75 longtime Beaverhead resident died Monday night in a Butte hospital after a week’s illness. Born November 18, 1869 in Michigan he arrived in Beaverhead County about 50 years ago. Survived by siblings and three nephews the Lima funeral will be Thursday at 2 pm at the Lima Methodist church with Rev. Lewis D. Smith officiating and burial in Lima Cemetery.

Beaverhead County Aaa Signers Increase in Production Program

A total of 202 ranchers and farmers in Beaverhead county signed for the Triple A production program, up 25 percent from last year, as announced by Herbert Wheat secretary. The higher signups come though a smaller allotment of 48000, while proposed work would total 97000, prompting a county request for additional funds. Claude Cory and Clarkson noted the situation as state Triple A committee members.

Beaverhead County High School kicks off with Sunday night baccalaureate in the auditorium at 8. Commencement follows next Thursday night May 17 at 8 in the auditorium. Prof Rush Jordan from Montana State Normal College will deliver the address titled The Road Ahead. Valedictory by Ethel Andersen and salutatory by Bernice Gleed. D L Johnson presents candidates. Dr R D Curry confers diplomas. Rev Lewis D Smith offers invocation and benediction. Honeychurch directs musical program and alumni cup is awarded by Dee Smith last year’s winner.

Taxes Topic Rotary Club Talk Monday

Fred Bennion of the Montana Taxpayers association spoke at the Dillon Rotary club dinner predicting a future return to a balanced federal budget. He noted 1931 property taxes were Montana highs and highlighted rising federal debt while praising past reductions in local debts. A film on taxation was shown.

Dillon Baseball Nines Begin Training And Fire Calls

Dillon volunteers trained with three runs in three days for the fire department. John Ball Ranch bunkhouse fire and a brush blaze on Twin Bridges road caused quick but minor damage. Hogan's alley near the Mellen hotel had no blaze. Beaverhead post American Legion announced 37 candidates, ages 12 to 16, practicing at the high school field under Floyd Vandegrift with pro prospects noted.

National Music Week Observed By Dillon Schools

Dillon observes National Music Week with all city schools participating. Primary students performed songs and dances of Allied Nations. intermediate and junior high units followed with a program at Bagley auditorium directed by Mrs Edna Schenk Moe and L A Gregory. The calendar includes a joint concert with Montana State Normal College and Beaverhead County High School Thursday at 8 15 pm and piano solos by Mr McFadden at Bagley Thursday 2 30 pm with ensembles. A Friday 11 am program for primary students concludes events.

High School Artist Hofmeister Wins Again in Open Show

Beaverhead county high school art instructor Andrew Hofmeister won first prize for his painting Summer Storm in the Northwest Water Color Society annual open show now at Seattle Art Museum. He also entered Thunder, depicting horses fleeing lightning. He will submit two oil paintings to Studio Gallery Seattle for a June July exhibition.

Martinell Elected Head of Water Users Irrigation

Ray Martinell of Dell was elected president of the Water Users Irrigation Company at a meeting last week to succeed the late J. Emery Keller. Pascal Bimat of Dell was elected to the board of directors, succeeding Keller. Norman Nelson of Dillon was named vice president, the post Martinell previously held.

Graduation Week Activities At Montana Normal College

Graduation week at Montana State Normal College begins May 20 announced by President Sheldon E. Davis. The baccalaureate service at 11:00 Sunday May 20 at the Presbyterian church features Rev. G. H. McCleave with the address Making a Success of Success and special music. A commencement breakfast for graduates families guests and alumni precedes the day’s events at 9:00 on Wednesday May 23. The main commencement feature is the graduates and faculty dinner at Residence Hall at 7:00 Wednesday.

Mayor O T Vandegrift names Elza Patrick water commissioner and police chief, reappoints W G Gilbert as city attorney and Dr F M Poindexter as health officer. Beaverhead Legion Post Initiation Leads Local Meeting

The Silver Bow post of the American Legion in Butte will join Beaverhead post No 20 at the Andrus hotel for a regular meeting and initiation tomorrow night. A large class of candidates is expected as Roy Ferguson announces plans for a Dutch lunch after the session. Guilty Plea to Forgery in Local Court Case

Adrian Leary Banks, 21, transient, pleaded guilty to forgery and received a three year state prison sentence from Judge Lyman A. Bennett. Arrested May 1 by Sheriff Claude Lay after cashing forged Harrison Ranch checks at bars and a restaurant in town. Banks began serving the term in Deer Lodge.

Guest Night Planned at Recreation Center

A guest night is scheduled at the students activity center in city hall on Saturday night. The American Legion auxiliary sponsors the event with center supervisors as hostesses. Joe Shaw leads the student committee organizing the program. The program starts at 10 p.m. after a piano recital. Bill Harrison heads a committee preparing a scrap book of center activities since last December, to be displayed at the party.
