Washington mid-session update notes business measures stalled in committee with moderation so far. Economy bloc pushes for tighter budgets as budget cuts near a billion and more, while taxation keeps corporate rate at 52 percent and wartime excises. House may consider a tax cut effective next January 1.

Revenue from stamp sales and box rents at the Dillon post office totaled 47555 for 1956, per Postmaster Harry J. Andrus. He notes a small but steady rise over several years indicating local business stability, with about a 500 increase from 1955. Money order fees and other sources are not included in the total.
The Montana chapter of the National Association of Postmasters plans a June convention in Beaverhead with 135 to 200 members and wives expected. A smorgasbord at the Andrus hotel kicks off events June 16, followed by sessions June 11, a luncheon, and county sightseeing including fishing. Distinguished guests from the Post Office Department and national officials will attend.

Barrett Hospital Auxiliary will observe National Hospital Day with an open house and tours next Sunday on Mothers Day. Florence Nightingale’s birthday is noted with tea from 1 30 to 4 30 p m. The tour highlights the redecorated pediatrics ward and new furnishings including three cribs and a croupette.
State Board of Education opened bids totaling 542 543 for four new Western Montana College buildings in Dillon including apartments union building dormitory and faculty housing. Low bids came from Huckaba Lutey 375 000 for general work Reber Plumbing Helena 80 185 for plumbing Frank Davis Dillon 33 891 electrical and Dyer Construction Dillon 44 180 for faculty housing. Palmquist Electric Helena 2 942 and Schmid Plumbing Anaconda 6 345 awarded respective subs. Work to begin after contract signing.
The Vigilante Electric Cooperative board met May 1 at 1 00 p m to open bids for a Wisdom substation and an oil circuit breaker for a transmission line near Bannack. Montana Electric Supply of Billings won the Wisdom substation contract and M and L of Butte the oil breaker.
The Order of the Arrow Scouts will hunt a buffalo at Hairpin ranch in the Big Hole Basin near Jackson on a planned Saturday event. The hunt will be filmed for national coverage and aims to provide meat for a May 24 26 Willow Creek Camporee barbecue. Spectators may watch. participants wear Indian dress and a branded setup will include a rider on horseback using a placed arrow.
Vida Flanders and Gayle Wheat were chosen as Beaverhead High School juniors to attend the 1957 Girls State session at Montana State College Bozeman June 23 to 30. Sponsors include the Women's Auxiliary to Beaverhead Post No 20 American Legion and the Dillon chapter. Nominees come from a list of juniors rated on scholarship readership and community involvement.
Two men died early Tuesday when a car driven by Tom Ross toppled into a water filled borrow pit. The crash near a ranch area was witnessed by a Garrett driver who alerted authorities around 3 am. Ross and Andrew High, a Navajo man from New Mexico believed to be 28 to 30, were found in the wreckage. drowning was ruled the cause. Wayne County officers and coroner officials noted no inquest was needed. Ross worked at the Pierce ranch. High had been hitchhiking and had cleaned yards in town recently.
Beav erhead Valley was drenched by storms Friday night and Saturday morning. The Western College weather station reported 63 inches of rain by noon Saturday making it one of the wettest spring storms in the Dillon region. Runoff in the mountains is rising as warmer weather returns.
The week brought above freezing temperatures for the first time since autumn with average lows near 39 and highs around 72. Moisture totaled .71 inches at the WMCE station while the snowline on surrounding mountains rose and hills showed tender greens as spring arrived.
