Granite Mines and the Lost Glory of Granite Montana
A historical portrait of Granite Montana once the nation’s richest silver district. The article chronicles McClure Merrill and Clark founding the Granite and Bi Metallic mines, the rise of 20 and 100 stamp mills, cashing hot bricks, vast dividends, and the town’s swift decline after the 1893 silver slump. It notes the town’s high altitude, bustling mining road, and the exodus of thousands within a day.
