Longtime Jackson Hole rancher holds up Atlas saloon suspect
Under Sheriff Murray wrestled with James J. Smith at the Sulli van saloon in a tense arrest. Smith, 82, tall with a false mustache, is charged as the Atlas saloon holdup leader and horse rustler, linked to two guns found on him and a prior burglary. He resisted arrest en route to the county jail but was subdued as deputies O'Donnel Sullivan and Noonan closed in. Guns matched from Homer Coombs home. Deputy McDonald was wounded in the Atlas holdup which netted $1500. Smith had been sought ten days after living in Dillon then Butte area.

Henry Hainds Dies After Paralysis Struggle
Henry Hainds of Dillon died last Saturday after a second stroke of paralysis. Born October 15, 1886 in Bedrock, he lived most of his life in Dillon and was skilled as a blacksmith and machinist. He is survived by his parents and four sisters. funeral held at the Odd Fellows hall with interment at Mountain View cemetery.

Taft Wins Massachusetts in Preferential Primary
Taft carried Massachusetts by 3600 popular votes in the preferential primary. Roosevelt delegates were elected due to a ballot arrangement fluke, eight delegates at large. District delegates split 14 for Taft and 14 for Roosevelt. Roosevelt declines to accept the delegates’ votes, citing possible tricks by his lieutenants.

Arbor Day Plans Differ This Year
Arbor Day will be observed by city schools along a cleaner city plan since grounds are well shaded. Pupils will help keep school grounds and nearby sidewalks clean and call attention to unsightly alleys. Similar programs in other cities improved appearance and awareness among children and adults.
Dillon to field fast baseball team this year
A Dillon meeting of businessmen professionals and citizens decided to form a fast baseball team for the season. A committee led by O. M. Best was named to organize funding and a manager will be chosen later. Opening game against Anaconda drew about 200 fans. Anaconda won 19 to 15.

Sixth annual high school declamatory contest held
The sixth annual high school declamatory contest was held Saturday evening in the assembly hall with four contestants. Carl Ostrander won first place for How the La Belle Stakes were Lost, Lucille Paul took second for The Bear Story, Margaret Carroll spoke Lloyd George, and Lawrence Price finished with Reinz's Address to the Romans. Judges were Attorney Joseph C. Smith Mrs. Matthew Orr and Rev. Jesse Lacklen. Ostrander praised for promising oratorical future. Both students may attend the state Inter-scholastic meet in Missoula. the team trains for sprints and jumps for the big meet.

The Shakespeare Club held its end of season banquet last Friday at St James guild hall. Miss Elizabeth Jones led guests with club members and dignitaries toasting the club while a lavish multi course meal featured in yellow and white with jonquils and tuber roses. The event showcased speeches by Mrs Clarke Anderson and Mr Marry Poindexter and music by Miss Lucy Herrick and Miss Jean Bishop among others.

Beaverhead miner predicts Salmon region growth and Oreway revival
Paul Jahnke, Beaverhead mining leader, returns from Salmon country praising prospects there and expects rapid development of the Oreway property on the Montana Idaho divide. He says the tunnel is 1700 feet with 400 more to go, awaiting snow melt to resume work and notes rich ore at depth in the dike and serpentine formations signaling one of the state's future big mines.
