Fort Benton: Montana’s Oldest Town and Fort Heritage
Fort Benton, Montana’s oldest town, grew from fur trade posts to a Missouri River gateway. The piece recounts its founding in 1864 by the American Fur Company, its adobe walls, bastions, and bustling garrison, plus tales of Culbertson's relocation, early wagon routes, gold dust intrigue, and tense Indian trading ceremonies with the Blackfeet and other tribes.

Fort Benton's Fort Began as Early Trade Hub
Matt Carroll and George Steel built a store and started the first business beyond the fort. A townsite was laid out in 1865 by Colonel W. W. Delhncy. Fort Benton became a military post in 1870 and the Northwest Fur Company left in 1877. The government briefly occupied the fort before decay, and in 1907 a bill by T. A. Cummings funded restoration. The ruins now sit in a public park with hopes for full restoration.
