Regular session of the Beaverhead County Board of Commissioners met March 6 7 8 1939 with Commissioners Henneberry Jackson and Clerk Baker. The board approved prior minutes and addressed routine matters before opening bids for county projects.
The Dillon PTA sponsored its annual father and son party at the Bagley school auditorium last Friday night with a large crowd. An all boys orchestra conducted by L A Gregory opened with Irish airs for St Patrick's Day, featuring oboe solo by Joe Taylor and violin solo by Harry Tash Jr. The program ended with motion pictures by Elmo Winn and refreshments in the domestic science room. Each boy attended with his father or another adult.
Charles L. Fuqua Bozeman hatchery chief and J Hagan Washington DC commerce rep inspect the Lima site planned for a government fish hatchery water source and other suitability factors. deputy game warden Charles Price Sheriff Paul Temple and Bill Steele join, with local sportsmen including William Gleed Dec Franks. The visit coincides with National Wildlife Week observations by Beaverhead Sportsmen Association.
Joe Wilder and Buck Wilder of Armstead were fined 200 dollars and sentenced to 90 days in county jail after pleading guilty to malicious destruction of property in justice court. They damaged the city jail by tearing out a radiator and breaking a window while assaulting a fellow inmate, then were restrained by officers.
Rev. Margaret Clifford of Kalispell state president of Business and Professional Women's clubs will pay an official visit to the Dillon club next Friday. She will be the honored guest at a banquet at the Totem cafe with Gladys Forrester in charge and Claudia Faust presiding. Miss Katherine MacGregor, longtime Dillon school nurse, will also be honored for her work with students. The program includes piano solo by Elizabeth Wilkinson, vocal solo by Dr. W. H. Stephan, a tribute by Charles Henry, solos by Mrs. O. K. Moe, and an address by Rev. Clifford titled In Dreaming on Things to Come.
Checks issued under the crops phase of the agricultural conservation program have begun arriving. Farmers must call at the county agent's office within 15 days to collect them. No range phase checks yet, expected soon. Local stockmen plan to attend the stockmen summer roundup in Whitehall on March 27 and 28.
Mining District Commander Bion Hall of Butte visited Beaverhead post at a Saturday meeting at the Metlen hotel. He likened the Legion’s growth to building a house and urged continued service by current members. Alvin M. Jones received a past commander badge, and Raymond P. Jones donated a banner with the constitution preamble. Visited By Joseph H. Knuckley and other Butte Legionnaires.
Montana Normal will again field a football team in the 1939 40 Montana college conference after an absence. The schedule features a round robin with Carroll Poly and Mines, starting with a track and field meet at Helena May 19 20. First round baseball pairs the Normal Bulldogs with School of Mines.
Gust Anderson was found guilty by a jury in justice court of illegally causing the killing of moose and deer in Wise River country. Frances Moore was found not guilty. Judge George Opp presided as the jury returned its verdict after an all day trial from 5 to 8 p.m. The defendants were alleged to have hired another party to do the killings.
Frank L. Stevens state director of the WPA Federal Art Project was the principal speaker at the Dillon Rotary Club dinner. He urged distributing art across the nation rather than concentrating in a few cities and highlighted Montana artists and the project’s aim to foster American art traditions. Dr. Walter H. Stephan discussed cancer causes and prevention, stressing early action.
A WPA allotment of 114 581 dollars funds county road construction and improvements in Beaverhead. The project covers all three districts and awaits final details from state WPA administrator Joseph E. Parker. The move comes as motorists deal with frost damage and spring thaws.
The Beaverhead board of public welfare, under state orders, reduced old age pension payments by one third. The March 1 caseload stood at 203 with $5,004 spent. the cut lowers the total to $3,000 plus, with officials present including Commissioners Jackson and Henneberry, Case Worker Darling ton, Secretary Baker, and State Supervisor Burr. Calendar and weather note spring arrival and warming streams. Rivers run high and muddy, roads deteriorate, while Dillon golf greens receive early-season play.
Barnett Wilkinson, 80, longtime Missoula resident and last known survivor among volunteers at the Battle of the Big Hole, died Friday in a Missoula hospital. He fought as an 18 year old against Nez Perce forces and General Gibbons troops. his account is on file with the U.S. War Department. He is survived by two brothers Aquilla of Hamilton and Fayette of Missoula and a daughter Stella Churchill of Missoula.
Montana State college's Bobcat band and Beaverhead county high school band join for a concert at the Normal college gym tomorrow at 10 30 a m. Dillon stores close from 10 30 to noon to allow attendance. Bobcat band directed by Lou Howard, renowned bandmaster who began his musical career there.
Walter Sonenstuhl, chief at U S Airways station northeast of Dillon, was struck in the forearm by a ricocheting bullet likely fired by a rabbit hunter or target shooter nearby. The bullet shattered on impact, was removed at Barrett Hospital, and he is recovering. Sheriff Temple probes to identify the shooter as Sonenstuhl heard shots while observing at the weather station.
A Dillon city caucus will be held at the city hall auditorium tomorrow night at 8 for selecting candidates for eleven city offices. The regular election is set for Monday April 3, with terms expiring for Mayor D A Galt City Treasurer F C McFadden Police Judge George Opp and councilmen A F Waldorf John T Orr George M Gosman H M Brundage W G Gilbert Frank Tyre A I Cashmore and Elmo Winn. All registered citizens may vote in the caucus. Typically caucus candidates run unopposed in the regular election.
The Birch Creek CCC group held a successful dance at the city hall auditorium on Saturday night with help from Lieutenant Coleman and city officers assisting throughout the event.
Amateur gunners will join the Dillon Gun Club’s next shoot on Sunday morning at the club’s traps as special guests. Acting President Bill Steele says amateurs will receive sage advice from experienced gunners. Several members drew prizes at last Sunday’s ham and bacon shoot in Anaconda, including Vic Westergard, Bill Steele, Paul Schwab, Frank Tucker, and Walter Jones.
