Dillon native PFC Darrell Peterson dies in Luzon action

PFC Darrell Peterson, 21, of Dillon was killed in action on Luzon February 8. He had been overseas eight months, entered service Feb 9, 1943 from Oregon City, born January 11, 1924 in Lund Idaho. He lived mainly in Beaverhead County and worked in a Dillon business. Survived by four brothers Donald in the Navy Sterling in Washington Richard and Bruce of Pocatello and three sisters Bernice Dillon Jesse Ditty Butte and Mrs Charles McGahan WAC in Tennessee.

O. T. Vandegrift Nominated For Mayor In Dillon

Dillon voters at the city hall caucus nominated local Montana Power manager and former fire chief O T Vandegrift for mayor. Two new aldermen were chosen with Vandegrift winning a close early ballot before acclamation. First Lieutenant LaRue Cantrell, son of Dillon residents, has been missing in action in France since March 3 amid Seventh Army operations in Alsace Lorraine.

Charles Page Wounded in Germany

Pfc. Charles E. Page of Dillon and Melrose was seriously wounded in action in Germany on March 8. Word came to his parents from their daughter in Powell Wyoming via Mrs. Dorothy Page. Page had been overseas eight months and in the armed forces nearly two years.

Father of Dillon Woman Claimed in Missoula

O. M. Gerer pioneer fruit grower of Bitter Root valley and father of Mrs. Albert Erickson of Dillon died Monday morning in a Missoula hospital. He was 70, born near Lake Constance on the Switzerland Austrian border February 3, 1875, and had lived in Bitter Root valley 41 years. He led the Equity association as president and chaired the Equity Growers and Shippers association in Hamilton. Funeral services will be held in Hamilton Thursday afternoon with the Masonic fraternity in charge.

Royal Arch Degree Team Makes Dillon Butte Meet

Mrs. J H Bridenberger of Billings state AAUW president visited Dillon unit with a luncheon and breakfast hosted by officers. Dillon Royal Arch Masons degree team led by Matt Telin joined a district meeting in Butte with Anaconda Whitehall and Butte degrees conferred before Dillon’s Royal Arch degree.

Piano Concert by Ralph McFadden at Beaverhead High

Ralph McFadden of Montana State Normal College will give a piano concert at Beaverhead County High School auditorium on Tuesday at 3 o clock. The program features Latin American music and has drawn praise in Great Falls Butte and other Montana cities. McFadden chairs the Inter-American Music committee of the Northwest Music Educators conference.

Rotary speaker cites constitutional guarantees at Dillon club

John Corette, prominent Butte attorney and Montana Power vice president, was the principal speaker at the Dillon Rotary dinner. He warned federal agencies may encroach on constitutional rights and urged study of proposals threatening Montana citizens. Paul Watzig, 59, Big Hole Basin rancher and former wrestler, was found dead at his ranch near Jackson. investigators say he died by his own hand with an army Springfield rifle.

Dillon Elks nominate officers for lodge 1554

David Hier was nominated as exalted ruler of Dillon lodge No 1554 BPOEF at the regular meeting last Wednesday. Other officers nominated include John Walters Harry Tash Phillip J Lovell Frank Lasich Henry Deutsch Paul Stahl Sr Harvey Sorenson. Election set for March 28 and installation planned in April by Butte lodge led by Leroy P Schmidt. The lodge also contributed $36 to the Red Cross, a dollar for every armed forces member.

George T Banks Dies in Los Angeles Former Dillon Resident

George T Banks, 76, longtime Dillon resident, died yesterday at his Los Angeles home. A Spanish American War veteran who enlisted from Dillon, he served in Company F, First Montana Infantry, wounded in action in the Philippines. He spent most of his life in Dillon before moving to California about 12 years ago.

Joseph Buck Dies After Illness in Barrett Hospital

Totony Book resident Joseph Buck of the Centennial valley died after a weeklong illness at Barrett hospital. Born April 29 1873 in DeWitt Iowa he moved to the Centennial in 1900 and ran a ranch until death. Survived by widow son Joseph Babe Buck of Lakeview a daughter in Idaho and two brothers. Remains at Brundage funeral home with arrangements pending.

Woolgrowers to Meet in Sheridan Next Wednesday

Members of the Southwestern Montana Woolgrowers association will hold a meeting in Sheridan on March 28. President J. H. Gilbert and Secretary Norman Giles urge all flockmasters to attend as topics include shearing lambing and range matters. Speakers from Yelena and Missoula are on the program with start time at 1 30 p m at Sheridan High School.

Beaverhead county high school wins football awards 1944

Beaverhead county high school's 1944 football squad, co champions of the Montana southern division with Laurel, received awards at a school assembly. Silver football emblems were presented by Prof. Walter Scott of the Montana School of Mines and coach Clancy Johnson also received one. The Beavers and Laurel tied 6 to 6 for the southern district title at Laurel on Armistice Day. Also in Dillon district Red Cross drive progress reports show $3,906.80 deposited toward $5,700 goal with Dillon contributing $3,832.80 including $789.25 from a recent telethon. Other district totals: Lima $332.39, Del $117.00, Wisdom $471.50.

Margaret Bradley Funeral Services Held Here Friday

Funeral services for Mrs. Margaret Bradley Beaverhead County matron who died at the hospital last Wednesday night were held Friday afternoon at the Brundage funeral home chapel. The Rev. L. Belle Long of the First Baptist church officiated with interment in Mountain View cemetery. Pallbearers were Parke, T. Scott, Elmer Gordon, Jess Brown, Duke Davis, Roy Stocker and Sol Sobolsky.
