Our Service Men list shows reclassifications by local board with 1-A 2-A 2-B and 1-C designations. It includes names such as Warren Emery Crane LaSharon B Montgomery Lorin V Flanders and Ralph D Martin. and Julius O Hutchison Ivan D Shaw Albert S Johnson Jr among others. The piece notes Navy sailor S 2c from Wisdom who arrived home on furlough after boat training in San Diego and mentions Nona Schrammeck now First Lieutenant Thompson station mess officer at El Centro Calif and her marriage to Captain Jack H Thompson at Mojave Calif. Beaverhead High Names New National Honor Society Initiates

Beaverhead county high school opened its annual National Honor Society initiation with a morning assembly. Candidates chosen for scholarship leadership character and service included Bob Gosman Helen Burt Bernice Gleed Dorothy Anne Boka Bob Wolf Miriam Morse Gerry Gilies Janet Curry Alice Davis presided with Pvt. Paul Lacry and Margot Luebben assisting.

Dillon Rotary hears Gosman on state education and unemployment review

State Senator George M. Gosman spoke at the Dillon Rotary dinner, detailing legislative session changes to higher education and the state board of education, and outlining unemployment compensation reforms. Missing sailor R Wilhelm from Melrose area reported in action

R L Dick Wilhelm son of Mr and Mrs Lee Wilhelm long time Melrose residents now of Coram Montana is reported missing in action in the Philippine theater of war. The 18 year old native of Melrose graduated from Columbia Falls high school in 1944 and trained at San Diego Naval Air Base before serving on an aircraft carrier since September 1944. A brother P H Wilhelm serves as aviation machinist mate with the Pacific fleet flag transport unit No 1 serving Admiral Nimitz.

Parke Scott Elected Head County Wool Pool

Parke T. Scott of Armstead was elected president of the Beaverhead County Wool Pool at a Wednesday meeting in the county extension office. Tom Foley of Armstead became vice president, Carl Hansen of Dillon treasurer, and Vern McMannis elected as director to replace Jens Bay who resigned. Pool members should report anticipated fleece numbers and new members may join via County Agent F A Ralston. Army tests for AS scheduled at Beaverhead County High School on Thursday April 12 at 9 a.m. for eligible 17 year olds born between Oct 1 1944 and Aug 31 1945 with citizenship and education requirements.

Wilbur Café Ad Found by Soldier in Luzon Beach

A Butte soldier on patrol on Luzon beach found an empty Wilbur Cafe and Fountain match book from Dillon Montana. The advert sparked nostalgia as Dillon is just 64 miles from his hometown. He later rode through Dillon on the morning train and sought the cafe to tell his tale.

Tommy Laden Wounded on Iwo Jima

Pvt. Thomas E. Laden aged 18 of Dillon Montana was wounded in the face by shrapnel on the eighth day after Iwo Jima landings. He writes his mother Mrs. John Laden that his injuries are not serious and that he is in a Marine base hospital in the Marianas. He is the first Beaverhead casualty reported in the Iwo Jima invasion and has a brother Pvt Donald Laden serving with the Army Medical Corps in the South Pacific.

MEA Unit Meets Here In Beaverhead County

The Beaverhead county local of the Montana Education Association met at the Andrus dining room on Friday night March 11 for a 6 30 dinner. Teachers from Monida Lima Armstead and Dillon attended as Mrs Margaret B Hollensteiner opened the program with Miss Genevieve Albertson presenting the speakers.

Mrs Bradley of Armstead Claimed in Beaverhead County

Mrs Margaret Bradley longtime Armstead resident in Beaverhead County died at Barrett hospital after a short stay. She would have been 90 in May and was born May 4 1855 in Lewisburg Ohio. She moved to Montana 35 years ago and lived in Armstead most of her later life.

Elks Ladies Club Planned at LO O F Hall

A well attended meeting last Friday formed plans for an Elks Ladies club. Mary Murray was elected president with Dora Smith as vice president Joyce Baril secretary and Isabel Bay appointed as the initial officer.

Service Men Group Begins Fourth Year

Beaverhead county's Citizens committee marks its fourth year with a St Patrick's dance at city hall. Service men and inductees admitted free as honor guests. The group started in 1942 with Elks and American Legion backing and has since hosted monthly entertainments and mailed gifts to service members at home and abroad. Over 600 Christmas gifts were sent for the 1944 holiday season.

Dillon to Hit Butte In Opener At State Tournament

Beaverhead county high school champions Dillon clash with Butte high Purples in the state basketball tournament opener at Billings. The game is the final opening round contest set for 10:30 p m March 22 as draw results announced Sunday. Butte claimed the southern division class A title with a 45 41 win over Bozeman at Livingston, while Dillon beat Butte 28 24 earlier this season.

Beaverhead County Sees Bids for Printing Contract

Beaverhead County commissioners opened bids for a two year county printing contract during the March 5 6 7 1945 regular session. The meeting also approved four privately funded cattle guards on the Big Hole Rattle Snake road and tabled Dr E T Gagner's application for county physician.

Golden Rule Vesper Service Honors Service Families

Mizpah chapter of the Order of Eastern Star held a Sunday vesper service at the Masonic hall honoring families of service members. A substantial silver offering was collected for Beaverhead County March Red Cross drive, to be turned over to the relief agency.

Beaverhead County High School Beavers repeat title run by overcoming a earlier loss to Polson to win 55 31 in Missoula. Dillon also beat Hamilton 61 41 in the morning game to reach the decisive final.

City Caucus Set for March 21 Nomination Night

Dillon officials announce a city caucus on Wednesday March 21 at City Hall to nominate candidates for mayor police judge city treasurer and two aldermen from each ward. Election day is April 2 with designated judges and clerks at each polling place.

Former Dillon Resident Ruth Hale Plate Dies in Oakland

Ruth Hale Plate sister of Chester Hale and former assistant registrar at Montana State Normal College died last Wednesday in Oakland California after a long illness. She served in the Normal College office from 1924 to 1927 and had visited Dillon often. Surviving are her husband Fred Plate, a sister in California, her mother and a sister in Colorado, and Mr. and Mrs. Hale.

Beaverhead Groups Hold Joint American Legion Meeting

Department officers from American Legion and Legion Auxiliary addressed a joint session last Thursday night in the Andrus hotel basement rooms. Speakers included Fred Lehn of Butte and Mrs Dee Patton of Dillon with district and post leaders from Anaconda Havre and Silver Bow present.

Chuck Davis Tops Division Cage Scorers in Montana Meet

Chuck Davis topped all high scorers across four Montana divisional tournaments last week. He led Dillon to the western division Class B title at Missoula with 86 points in four games, averaging 21.5 a contest and a high of 27 points in one game, tying the tourney record. Runner-up Dick Carsten sen, Helena, averaged 20.3 points in three games as he helped the Bengals win the Class A northern division title at Great Falls, with Jimmy Cordial of Anaconda also a top performer.

Funeral for William M Stewart Held in Dillon

Funeral services for William M. Stewart, Beaverhead County rancher, were conducted Saturday afternoon at the Brundage funeral home chapel. Local and county friends attended. Mrs Edna Blackburn of the First Baptist church officiated and Dillon lodge No 1564 BPOE conducted graveside rites. Interment was at Mountain View cemetery. Pallbearers were Charles Henderson Frank Rife James McKenzie C F Peterson W W Hawkins and Joe Dowling.
