Fertilizer Boosts Montana Crops Says Experiments Show
Treasure State farm and livestock notes that continuous cropping depletes soil though fertilizer strengthens and sustains productivity. Experiments with acid phosphate on corn wheat and alfalfa show wheat yields rising by 3.44 bushels per acre and alfalfa increasing 0.386 tons per acre with annual applications. Apply phosphorus when growth starts, typically fall for wheat or early spring for quick-acting phosphate.

Crop Rotation Increases Farm Profits With Legumes

In 1917 corn in rotation with cowpeas and wheat reached 32.8 bushels per acre, and with alfalfa and wheat 44.9. continuous corn yielded 17.6. Wheat in rotation produced 13.6 to 15.8 bushels, while continuous wheat averaged 11.8 in 1917.
