Nurses Aide Course Planned by Beaverhead County

Beaverhead county approves an American Red Cross nurses aide course. At a city hall meeting last Friday night, all attendees enrolled, with about 26 women expected to complete 80 hours of instruction led by Miss Alice Ralston of Wise River.

Well Known Lima Rancher Dies at Home

William M. Stewart 69 Beaverhead county resident for 45 years died at his ranch near Lima after months of poor health. Born June 9 1875 in Pickens South Carolina he arrived in Beaverhead county in 1900 and later expanded his Lima ranch which he had run for about three decades.

Local Soldier Reported Prisoner in Germany

S/Sgt. John Melvin McDowell 22 of Wisdom was listed missing in a flight over Germany since December 29 1944 and is now reported a prisoner in a Nazi camp. The Red Cross relayed the information to his parents. He served as a waist gunner on a bomber from an England base and had been overseas over a year. He attended Beaverhead County High School before enlisting two years ago.

Dillon girl injured when car driven from Hillstead collided with a pickup Wednesday afternoon. Mrs Hillstead also injured and hospitalised. Resident of Big Hole and Dillon Dies

Eli Sage, 73, Beaverhead County pioneer and long time Big Hole basin resident, died Wednesday night in a Missoula hospital after a brief illness. A California native, he came to Montana in 1878 and spent most of his life ranching in the county.

Dillon Fire Department Names Chief and Officers

Dillon's volunteer fire department re elected O. T. Vandegrift as fire chief at the annual meeting in city hall. Nominees for other posts include Bob Moses as assistant chief Elmer Sage as secretary and William McMannis as treasurer. Board members are renominated. Loren Davis will serve as secretary of the Relief association succeeding Leslie Smith.

Beaverhead Ranch Laborer Dies After Illness

Matthew Albritton age 67 long time Beaverhead County ranch laborer died this morning at Barrett Hospital after two days admission. He had suffered failing health for months and was a native of Iowa born in 1878. He resided in Washington before moving to the region.

Beaverhead County Voter Registration Update

Beaverhead county lists 2981 eligible voters in the Clerk and Recorder office. Registration dropped 393 from November. Dillon precincts show the largest decline with 211 fewer registrations. Cpl. Robert Irvine Sibold 21 of Upton California was seriously injured when the car he drove from Ephreta Army Air base near Spokane to furlough home went off the highway near Armstead and overturned. He was admitted to Barcett hospital after the crash.

The Citizens' committee hosts a monthly service men dance on March 17 at city hall to mark four years of activity since starting March 16. Beaverhead county began entertainments for departing selectees with a 1942 Elks hall event for 32 inductees.

Military officials report Private First Class Robert J. Rott 20 of Dillon is dead after being missing in action since Christmas Day. He was later identified as aboard a transport sunk in the European theater and is no longer listed as missing.

Vandegrift Heads Beaverhead Sportsmen Group

Otto T. Vandegrift was reelected president of the Beaverhead Sportsmen's Association at the annual meeting in the city hall council chamber. Mrs. Jack Keenan was reelected secretary and Henry Deutsch became treasurer. Elected to the board were Eddie Hilger, Raymond Schwartz, Jim Campbell, Wayne Myers, R. M. Barrett, and Jack Keenan. The group made recommendations to be sent to the state fish and game department.

Senator George M. Gosman returned Friday from Helena after the 29th legislative session closed Thursday. He praised the session for constructive laws benefiting the state and expressed approval of the appropriations for the University of Montana units including Montana State Normal College.

Ennis Cops Sweep Northern Rocky Mountain Ski Meet

Ennis dominated the NRMSA tournament at Elkhorn Hot Springs with Jules Gustafson of Ennis winning the downhill and slalom titles. Virginia Jeffers of Madison County claimed the women's slalom, as host Dillon Ski Club earned praise for staging the event and snow conditions improved with new Friday and Saturday nights. Claud Angle of Anaconda finished second to Gustafson in Class A downhill.

Lula Shaw Dies Here Saturday

Mrs. Lula M. Shaw 78 well known Dillon matron died Saturday morning at 7 15 at her daughter Mrs Ed Knox home after illness since the prior Monday born July 31 1866 in Guernsey County Ohio married to Harry E. Shaw in Pulaski Tennessee August 19 1886 they moved to Dillon in 1917 where Mr Shaw then worked as a foreman on the Poindexter Orr ranch dying in Dillon in 1924

Ray Malone Sentenced to One Year for Grand Larceny

Beaverhead county ranch hand Ray Malone pleaded guilty to grand larceny in district court before Judge Lyman H. Bennett and was sentenced to a year in state prison. He was moved to Deer Lodge to begin serving his term after officers recovered a gold watch alleged stolen from a bar companion. The case was filed by County Attorney Lew Brundage. A recent law enforcement class in the courthouse discussed Defensive Tactics led by FBI Special Agent R. H. Wright.

Normal supervisor speaks on exceptional child training at Dillon Rotary

Mrs. Elizabeth Steed, supervisor of the exceptional child department at the Montana State Normal College, spoke at the Dillon Rotary Club dinner about the urgent need for proper facilities. She described Montana's shortage for training an estimated thousand children and noted 19 pupils are currently in the college program, just one short of the maximum per instructor. continuation of the program could expand training availability.

Former Dillon Resident F A Johnston Dies in California

F A Johnston known as Fon and a Spanish American War veteran died of a heart attack in Yreka California. His brother Harve Johnston, longtime Dillon resident, reported the death. Elza Patrick, Dillon police chief, is a nephew. Johnston left Dillon for California about 35 years ago.
