The Beaverhead county printing contract goes to the Examiner for two years starting this month after a unanimous vote. The Tribune Publishing Co. of Dillon and the Lima Ledger submitted bids. Examiner had the lowest bid. Sheriff McCollum is instructed to enforce state law on dance hall licenses outside city limits. city halls within Dillon and Lima are unaffected.
Winter quarter commencement at Montana State Normal College will confer one bachelor of education and eighteen two year diplomas. Thomas A. Seibert of Dillon will receive the degree, with Roy Austin of Whitehall delivering the address. The diploma recipients include Antrim Barnes Jr and nineteen others from towns such as Three Forks, Hot Springs, Butte, Conrad, Manhattan, Kevin, Brockton, Sidney, Stan ford, Bear Creek, Hinsdale, Belt, and Melrose.
At the Beaverhead chapter Daughters of the American Revolution meeting at Mrs. Frank A. Hazelbaker’s home, a mixed quartet from Normal College sang under Frances Robinson’s direction, Marguerite Collins played a Diang number, and a one act play Solemn Pride was performed by the college group. Tea was served.
A large audience enjoyed the Normal college men's glee club in its first annual music festival at the college auditorium. Under Mrs Grace Redburn the program featured Negro cowboy and Indian folk songs with soloists Jess Whitney Theodor Lavine Mark Vander Ark Jim Redburn Jack Gaines and Jack Holland. Duets and a Vander Ark quartet highlighted the performance with Ruth Phelps and Evelyn Hunsberger providing dance and vocal numbers. Charles Martin accompanied with Burmah Ashcraft. rancher Alex Peyre visited from Dell for business.
Under the American Legion auxiliary, the flag declamation contest at the training school auditorium crowned sixth graders Florence Boka Dillon and Ernest Birrer Gosman as winners. Seventh and eighth graders June Patrick and Billy Tower, both of Dillon, will represent Beaverhead county in the upcoming regional contest in Butte. Over 20 contestants from county schools competed, delivering self prepared declamations on The Flag of the United States Its History and Symbolism. Winners in Butte move on to a state meet in Helena.
George Williams, 34, serving 10 to 20 years for burglary, escaped from Deer Lodge state prison last Sunday afternoon while a trusted worker at the power house. Sheriff James A. McCollum said Williams was missed during the 5 oclock count and local officers are on the lookout. He had been sentenced in Dillon in January 1931 for Eliel's store burglary. Continued on page 8.
Plan for Barrett hospital tea at St James guild hall next Saturday afternoon under Dillon seven churches women groups. Tea 2 to 5 pm with entertainment directed by Mrs J C Jeppson. Photo display featuring oldtime scenes. Call local women with photos. No admission, silver donation requested. Program 3:30 includes county high school choruses, Gargoyle Club playlet, Dillon Choral.
Mrs Roy Ford has returned from Logan Utah where she accompanied her father Hiram Lapham who has been quite ill and a patient in the Budge clinic.
Dillon residents will hear the Bobcat band of Montana State College on Sunday March 17 in the Normal college auditorium. The 40 member concert marks the twenty fifth annual tour and the first Dillon appearance in years. Directed by Lou Howard the program features Piccolo Ben Brumfield Oboe Robegon Allport Clarinet Robert Patten Charles Wells Robert Fransham Leonard Giesker William Hess Keith Linthacum Charles Mather Cornet George Sime Bozeman Main Warden Tom Leedham Raymond Lewis John Symonds.
The Dillon Business and Professional Women's club holds its regular monthly meeting at Gleed's tonight with dinner at six thirty. President Luella Stickney says members should attend as matters of interest will be discussed. The publicity committee led by Berthana Koontz includes Harriet Bills and Selma Herr.
Bs. D. Sanding, supervisor of the Beaverhead National forest, and K. D. Fiock, assistant supervisor, went to Missoula in the last week to attend a meeting of forestry officials. They discussed the department’s program to be carried out during the spring and summer months.
Auction sale of horses scheduled for next Saturday afternoon March 16 at the stock yards includes 80 head from Poindexter Orr ranch and 40 from Selway Sheep company. Luther 8 Smith and A G Williams listed as auctioneer and clerk. Beaverhead ranchers urged to list horses for best prices. Dillon Westwoods basketball team leaves for Helena to compete in the state independent tournament starting tomorrow. The local independents face Daly Sheas tonight at the high school gym.
Beaverhead county hog control committees elected officers at city hall. H M Miller was chosen North side chair with J H Keenan as vice chair and Lee Joy on the committee. Dick Nedrow led the South side with Luther Smith as vice chair and Joe Mautz as a committee member. County officers will be chosen later. County Agent Bernard Williams and Secretary Luther Smith reviewed 1934 activities and outlined the 1935 government program. Many ranchers have signed 1935 applications. those not yet signed are urged to attend promptly.
Beaverhead post of the American Legion will discuss several business matters at its regular monthly session tomorrow night at the city hall. Commander J C Wedum Hag asks all members to attend. Refreshments will be served. A special entertainment program is planned. The post, recently incorporated, will finalize plans for a new club house. The Junior baseball committee Ben Davis C M Casterline and Harold Warner will report. The program last year was a success and promising material was developed. The Legion will continue its sponsorship of the movement. Tentative plans for a Fourth of July community celebration also discussed.
O T Husted a prominent rancher of the Big Hole basin died suddenly at his Jackson home last Friday. Funeral services were held Monday at the Dillon Masonic Temple with Rev H J Schmidt presiding and interment at Mountain View cemetery. A large crowd attended from the Big Hole basin.
The report summarizes receipts and expenditures of the Dillon local Girl Scout council for 1934. Highlights include beginning balance of 37.87 dollars, gifts from individuals and organizations totaling 73.00, card party proceeds 84.10, membership dues 9.00, cash donations 47.50, and petty cash 3.12, for a total of 254.77 with a year end balance of 162.18.
An audience poll at a Butte forensic contest gave Montana State Normal College a decision over School of Mines debaters. The Normal team opposed arms shipments, while the Mines team argued for the motion. The No decision came as the audience voted on the merits of the question.
Mr and Mrs Herman Peterson returned from a two months trip to eastern points where Peterson competed in trapshoots and flyer events. He earned trophies in multiple tournaments and four prizes are displayed at McCalebs. His last event was the Kansas City flyer shoot.
