Patriotic program highlights school declamation winners

Under the American Legion auxiliary auspices a patriotic program was held at the training school auditorium last Thursday. Intermediate winners Florence Boka and Kenneth Welborn led the event while junior high victors were June Patrick and Billy Tower. Other speakers included Mary Ann Luebben Bruce Jeppson Jo Ann Deputy and Carl Davis with patriotic readings by Ruth Jackson Helen Kennedy Elizabeth Wilkinson.

Badly Needed Moisture Comes to Beaverhead

A heavy winter storm brought much needed moisture to Beaverhead county, dropping inches to a foot of snow in the valley and heavier snowfall in surrounding areas. Highways remain slick in spots while travel by bus and train sees minor delays. National Parks Airways flights faced difficulties but the overall situation is not yet dangerous.

Hospital Tea Set For March 16 At St James Hall

The annual Barrett hospital tea will be held the afternoon of March 16 at St James guild hall. Proceeds go to buy equipment for patient comfort. The event is sponsored by women’s groups from seven Dillon churches. A photo tea is planned with photographs gathered for a collecting display. Mrs. J C Jeppgon directs a program and light refreshments will be served.

Expert On Poultry To Speak Here

Miss Harriet Cushman from the Montana extension service will lead a courthouse meeting this afternoon on poultry raising issues. County Agent Bernard Williams organized the event with public attendance invited and plans for a Dell meeting tomorrow.

Mrs Haines Hosts Bluebird Club Pinochle Dinner

Mrs Jennie Haines entertained the Bluebird club last Thursday evening with dinner followed by pinochle. Mrs Glen Lyons won the high score, with Mrs Annie McKnight close behind in second. Mrs Mamie Hoffman held the low score.

Montana Golf Tournament Dates Set at Falls

The ninth annual Montana state golf tournament will run July 3 to 28 at Rendon Lark Country Club with open division July 23 and 24 and qualifying through July 28. President B Carroll led the committee defining dates and events.

Rotary Club Hosts Men of Lima at Dillon Dinner

About 20 Lima businessmen and ranchers visited the Dillon Rotary club at the Metlen hotel Monday night. Lambert Eliel chaired. Carl Taylor welcomed guests and James Pierce replied. W. W. Wahl led group singing. Rush Jordan spoke on Friendship with stories about cooperation. J Kendall of Lima reviewed U S happenings since 1929 as The Strange Malady of Uncle Sam. Lea Truax spoke on Beaverhead development projects. R E B Albright discussed NRA court decisions. A cornet duet by Elizabeth Wilkinson and L A Gregory with Howard Morss Jr. at the piano capped the program.

Normal Cage Team Plays Wisdom Saturday Contest

The Normal B squad of Dillon defeated Wisdom Athletic Club 45 to 26 at Wisdom. A postgame dance followed with the Normal orchestra providing music to cap an unusually enjoyable evening for local residents.

Lima Victorious in District Tournament Finals

Lima defeated Twin Bridges 11-7 in the finals of the district grade school cage meet at the high school gym under the Dil lon PTA. The Twin Bridges Orphans’ home team beat Dillon for third place, leaving Dillon in fourth. The all district team included Woody of Orphans’ home and Bur of Lima.

Senator Melton urges liquor by the drink bill

Beaverhead senator George M. Melton urged passage of H. B. 218 to issue permits for retail liquor by the drink. He argued strong controls would stamp out bootleggers and violators of the liquor control act, but the bill was defeated.

Wisdom Woman's club to lease residence for library reading room

Wisdom March 4. The Wisdom Woman's club announces lease of the Strawbridge residence on Riverside Avenue for a public library reading room and meeting place with option to purchase after one year. Occupancy planned by May first with a fundraising bazaar. over 700 volumes already shelved along with new titles from Mrs. Fred Hirschy and others.

Colored Stars Top Bulldogs In Great Exhibition Of Basketball

The Harlem Globe Trotters defeated the Normal college Bulldogs 60 to 44 at the Normal gym in Dillon. The exhibition featured dazzling ball handling and playful tricks, with the Globe Trotters aiding Bulldogs on late baskets as the crowd roared. Crocker, Normal’s center, failed to win the tip-off for the first time this season. Coach Kakuske may seek additional traveling teams before season end. Edgar Rife attends the county commissioners meeting in Medicine Lodge.

Dillon Man Dies Sunday at His Dillon Home

J J Dalzell a Dillon resident for eight years died Sunday evening at his home northeast of Dillon after a brief illness Born in New York 66 years ago he came west as a young man and mined in Butte for over four decades He moved to Dillon eight years ago surviving his widow and two Dillon daughters Mrs H J Reeves and Mrs John McGrath Also relatives James McCarthy of Missoula Funeral services were at St Patrick s Catholic church in Butte this morning Mr and Mrs Park Scott and children were Armstead visitors in the city on Sunday

Centennial Rancher Charles Robinette Dies Near Reichle

Charles Robinette, longtime Centennial valley rancher and Beaverhead county resident, died early Monday at Woods Livestock Company ranch near Reichle after a brief illness. Born in Hartwell, Missouri, he was 60 and had lived in Montana about 20 years. Funeral services were at Brundage chapel with Rev. H. J. Schmidt officiating, and interment proceeded in Mansfield, Missouri. Sam Ditty accompanied the body. Mr and Mrs Chick Wright and Mrs Edna B Emerick visited Dell on Sunday at the home of Mr and Mrs Jack Thiel.

Normal Men's Glee Club to Present First Annual Festival

The Montana State Normal college glee club will host its first annual music festival at the college auditorium next Saturday evening under Mrs Grace Redburn. It includes solos duets and quartets with art songs by Evelyn Hunsberger of Browning in Indian costume, a Spanish dance by Ruth Phelps of Deer Lodge, and a two part program featuring American folk tunes and American art songs and ballads.

Big Hole Irrigation District Leased by County Officials

The Big Hole Irrigation district in Beaverhead County was leased by the board of county commissioners at its regular session. F. R. Mec Dowell secured the lease for 1200 dollars covering until January 1, 1936, with a quarter as down payment. The district spans about 8500 acres in the Big Hole basin. The state examiner's report was ordered incorporated into the minutes. County Agent Bernard Williams discussed extension work with the commissioners. Present were W. B. Hartwig Edgar Rite and Martin C. Jackson.

Corn Hog Control Group Meeting Set for Saturday

The Beaverhead county corn hog control committee will meet at the city hall council room next Saturday at 2 p.m. to review the 1935 program and past year’s activities. Lu ther Smith, secretary and treasurer, calls the session educational with officers to be elected. all signed or intending applicants are invited to attend. Henry Fitter of Lima attended the prior business matter.
