The Beaverhead County Emergency Relief board reports nearly 500 men employed in January and February with total county spending of 14500 dollars. March employment continues with day wages reduced to 2.00 dollars for all labor projects starting next Monday. The relief effort has benefited the county overall.
Over 60 junior high pupils performed The Vagabond's Dream in a three act operetta at the training school auditorium under Mrs Grace Redburn. A large audience praised the ensemble and directors with standout parts including The Vagabond Jack Selway King Paul Decker Queen Alice May and The Snow Queen Jeanne Covall among others.
The Calico Tea at St James Guild Hall on Saturday afternoon drew a large crowd. Proceeds will fund equipment for Barrett Hospital. An entertaining program featured acts sponsored by church groups including vocal duets, vaudeville, readings, a college girls quartet, a playlet The Inaugural Bowl, a violin solo, dances, and choral selections.
Walter Schmittroth of Dillon received a certificate and first prize in a national Field and Stream fishing contest. He entered a 16 pound 3 ounce steelhead rainbow caught in Hidden Lake last September, the top entry in his division, winning $100 in merchandise. The trout is displayed at City Baking company. The editor sent a congratulatory letter with the certificate.
D. Hirschman Leonard Innes and Walter V. Grimes are appointed appraisers in the Mary J. Minter estate. Thomas J. Demmons files for letters of administration in the estate of the late Pleg Demmons.
Beav erhead ranchers petitioned the county board of commissioners for a 20 to 25 percent reduction in real estate valuations across Beaverhead and Dillon. The board said it lacks authority and will forward the request to state officials. The delegation included about 40 ranchers from all districts. Honorary pallbearers named for the funeral of Senator Thomas J. Walsh were announced for a Helena service tomorrow morning. Active pallbearers from Helena were listed.
John Flynn of Lima transacted business in the city on Saturday, recording routine civic activity. The brief note records a local citizen's activity within the urban economy and governance framework.
The state examiner reports the City of Dillon’s departments and books in good order with proper claims. Water department commissioner Forrest Bayerd praised for improved accounting and complete records except a monthly report to the city council. Total period collections Dec 31 1931 to Dec 31 1932 were $45,013.28 with taxes $22,504.37 and water receipts $19,037.65. Light maintenance brought in $1,248.16.
Bert Orr was reappointed to the state livestock commission by Governor Erickson last Friday. His term runs six years beginning March 1. C J McNamara of Big Sandy was also reappointed to the board.
Miss Bertie Mathews began a new term as Beaverhead County treasurer on Monday and serves her second term. Miss Norah Connelley is retained as deputy.
Registration for the Dillon city election to be held Monday April 3 totals 1 478 across four wards. Clerk Albert Baker announced the rise of 267 from last year and 307 from the year before, possibly the largest municipal registration in the city’s history. Last year’s total was 1 211 and the year before 1 171. Continued on page 2.
A Montana State Normal College women debate team defeated Montana State College women last night in the training school auditorium. Audry Boub and Joyce Rasmussen composed the Normal team arguing against cancellation of world war debts. Judges were Violet Eastman, Sam Wilkinson, and W. G. Gilbert. many Dillon residents attended. Earlier, a Normal men’s team beat a School of Mines team in Butte on the war debt issue.
State University Missoula March 8 Varaily Vodvil featured seven acts. Frank Hazelbaker of Dillon played in the Sigma Alpha Epsilon orchestra and Wilbur Squires portrayed a King of Diamond court soldier in the Independent Men act. Each act ran fifteen minutes.
Beav erhead mining session foreshadows public talk as Professors Dingman and Perry address water in mines while 126 bills await governor signature. Metlen and Melton return from Helena noting key educational and lease measures. Governor signs blue sky investment regulations among others.
A two act operetta titled Maid In Japan will be staged by Montana State Normal college music students at the college auditorium Friday evening. Grace Redburn Ralph McFadden direct with Anna Mautz and Marie King assisting. Helen Stilwell wrote the book and lyrics with music by Margaret and E J Gar wood. The cast lists 32 students including 20 in the chorus and 18 numbers to be performed by a 15 piece orchestra.
Four seniors at Montana State Normal College will receive bachelor of education degrees at March 17 fall quarter commencement. It will be the largest single group to graduate since the college became a four year institution. Dr. H H Swain will deliver the commencement address. he is a former president of the Normal College.
George Fuller, one of four men charged with possession of materials used in counterfeiting, was sentenced in Helena district court to two years at hard labor in Deer Lodge prison. Dodge Shannon received one year. Brewer and Tatum were dismissed. they and Fuller face conspiracy charges in justice court, with Shannon seeking a new trial.
Beaverhead county residents learned four local banks were closed by the governor's closing proclamation and would not reopen until Friday morning. Banks affected include First National and State Bank & Trust in Dillon, First National of Lima, and State Bank of Wisdom.
60 year old E. Fitzgerald was found dead with a bullet wound 20 miles south of Dillon. Sheriff Orr and deputies discovered the body after a search begun when he disappeared yesterday. A note indicating suicide was found. Fitzgerald had been despondent in recent days.
The Beaverhead county district court reported 324 cases filed in 1932, up 19 from 1931. Divorces declined while marriage licenses set a record, with 153 licenses issued. The annual statement from Clerk Fred Rife details civil suits, probate, guardianship, and mothers pensions among figures for 1932 and 1931.
Dillon Rotarians will host about 30 Armstead business men and ranchers tonight at the Metlen hotel. President T Lee McCracken extended the invitation after the club's last meeting. The dinner, usually held Monday, includes an entertainment and speech program.
