The Beaverhead board passes a resolution urging the governor to declare an emergency to unlock relief work funding and allow continued operations. Officials urge swift action to restore relief services and support affected communities.
The Beaverhead board of county commissioners met March 6 7 8 1933 in regular session with all members and the clerk present. Minutes of the prior meeting were read and approved as read. A new surety bond for Mrs Ro appears continued on page 4.
First payments on national forest grazing fees for Montana and Northern Idaho cattle owners will be 50 percent higher this year than last. Hvan W. Kelley, regional forester, received notice from Henry W. Wallace that second installments and all 1934 payments will be based on an investigation to adjust fees to market conditions. The new schedule matches the 1931 rate. 14 1/2 cents per head per month is charged.
Governor John E. Erickson re signed Monday and was named United States senator by his successor Governor Frank H. Cooney. He will fill the term of the late Senator Thomas J. Walsh and depart for Washington to assume duties. The reshuffle ends weeks of talk after Roosevelt's election and Walsh's planned cabinet appointment.
Winter graduating exercises at the Montana State Normal College conferred four degrees and twenty three diplomas. Dr. H H Swain delivered the commencement address. Degree candidates included Fred Gray Twin Bridges Flora Holden Dillon Alvin Rudolph Great Falls and Joe Ryburn Dillon. Ralph McKadden led music for processional and recessional.
The funeral for Oliver KE Fitzgerald occurred Saturday afternoon at Brundage chapel with Rev. R. O. Shannon of the Baptist church officiating.
Beaverhead county high school instrumental department presents the girls band and girls orchestra in a free 8 pm concert at the high school gym directed by L A Gregory. the program includes solos and a dance by LaVerne Dickenson with notable numbers by Lulu Belle Gilman Edith Orr Leone Cashmore Betty Hall Lucille Nettik Jane Waldorf Edythe Kenison Mildred Taylor Cecile Morrison Eva Gilman.
Elected exalted ruler E W Johnson and delegates Leonard Innes to the national convention led a Dillon Lodge No. 1554 Odd Fellows meeting. Officers chosen unanimously include Francis Gelhaus as leading knight and W E Barry as loyal knight, with Lee Hoerning lecturing knight and E L Wheat secretary.
Phil Anderegg formerly of Dillon now living in Missoula is spending several days visiting friends in the city.
Governor Erickson signed H. R. 237 lowering motor vehicle license fees in several cases and directing half the collected fees in Butte to city street upkeep. The changes cut motorcycle dealer fees from 22.50 to 15 and reduce most vehicles over 2750 pounds from 15 to 10, among other adjustments for trucks trailers and other classes.
Philip Gauchay was winner of the extemporaneous speaking contest held last night at the high school gym. Tom Hartwig and Frank Tyre tied for second. Other contestants included Francis Dean, James Doyle, Isabel Houghton, Jean Hoffman, Eddie Exum, James McCulley, Jack Reeves, Harold Wheat, Robert Watson, Glen Hocking, Cecil Musberger, Edith Orr, Lucille Stephens, and Helen Erwin.
Both the First National Bank and State Bank and Trust Company opened for regular business this morning. Checks can be drawn on existing accounts and new deposits accepted. In fact, business as usual.
Nearly 30 business men and ranchers from Armstead and Horse Prairie attended a Dillon Rotary Club inter community dinner at the Metlen hotel last Wednesday. Professor R. E. Albright was the principal speaker with remarks from guests and club members.
The Greater University of Montana executive council approved salary cuts up to 20 percent to meet a $700,000 annual allotment from the legislature. No departments would be eliminated, but some one year contracts will expire as faculty pursue graduate work. The revised budgets go to the state board of education for approval on April 3.
The Montana State Normal College music department presented the tuneful operetta Maid in Japan in the college auditorium Friday night to a large audience of Dillon music lovers. Directors Ralph McKadden and Mrs Grace Redburn led with assistants Myrtle Savidge Anna Mautz and Marie King. A 16 piece orchestra accompanied the cast and a Kampus Kadeta dance added color to the lively production. Dion Chapter No. 8 Masons motored to Butte last Friday evening for an important meeting. Members Matt Kay John T. Orr A A Schroeder L J Smith Joel T Newnes Ned Saunders Loren Spencer Harris Opp Amos A Eliott and Paul Temple attended. They returned to Dillon Friday night after the session.
Reports from Beaverhead residents tied to Montana say no townspeople were injured after last Friday’s earthquake. Widespread calls and telegrams to Dillon soon confirmed that noMontana residents suffered harm amid the Southern California quake area chatter.
The annual Montana State Normal College men’s dinner was held at the Metlen hotel with about 130 present. Prof Robert Clark hosted, introducing speakers including Gale Anderson on Athletic Activities and William Chance on Non Athletic Activities.
Professors Oscar A. Dingman and Eugene B. Perry of the Montana School of Mines in Butte spoke at a Beaverhead Mining association meeting in the county courthouse. Dingman discussed mine water control and pumping, while Perry covered groundwater entry into mines. The event drew mining men from across the county.
Senator George Melton and Representative Joe Metten spoke at the Ditton Rotary Club Monday night. They gave an overview of the last legislative session, reviewed bills, and described general legislative activities. C. E. Blinn presided. D. A. Galt announced a joint Dillon Twin Bridges meeting for next Wednesday in Twin Bridges. Ro E. Albright from the Normal College faculty joined as a new member.
