Two Butte Men in Local Toils For Indiscretions

American Legion Auxiliary to hold an auction sale on Saturday March 1 from 9 am to 5 pm with a lunch break. Luther Smith will auction items to raise funds for equipment for a children’s playground in Dij on. Items include clothing groceries meat poultry hardware and more. Members of Dillon Elks Lodge 1554 met Tuesday evening to set a basket social and dance for March 15. Elks and guests from Dillon and Virginia City will attend. They also discussed a soon to start card playing tournament.

Beavers Sweep Consolation In District Tourney

Beavers recover from a 31-21 loss to Whitehall in the B class district tournament and win the consolation bracket. Whitehall beats Twin Bridges 36-25 in the finals to earn district representation at Hardin. last year Beavers were district champs, edged out of divisional play by Big Timber.

Larry Redmond of Big Hole basin rancher appeared on the We the People program recalling the origin of the Naval cry Dont give up the ship. Detectives report Everett Walters 30 arrested in San Francisco on December Armstead post office robbery and returned to Montana with two others held on similar charges. Robbers cut a door lock at Guyar store to steal money and money order blanks.

Holiday police court actions surge in county

After the long holiday, three preliminary cases reached the police court. Donald Barry, 18, drew a 10 day county jail sentence for stealing an electric lantern from a trapper's Birch Creek cabin. Werner Rhueff of Butte faced second degree assault charges for striking Ray Dooling in Wise River with a wrench and was bound over for district court on $1,000 bond. Fred Budd of Butte pled not guilty to operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated with a $500 bond, arrested Sunday near Glen. his prior Boulder DUI record and revoked permit were noted, with license held in Butte awaiting posting.

Ski Club Readies Petticoat Fever Farce This Weekend

Dillon Ski club presents Petticoat Fever a non tropical farce by Mark Reed at the Ritz Theatre in New York City with cast including Dascom Dinsmore Albert Erickson and John Landry. Local rehearsal runs three weeks and producer Edwin Buck praises the show in a New York Post review.

Kiwanians heard George M. Gosman, former American Legion department commander and Beaverhead County active service board chairman, discuss national defense at the regular meeting last Thursday evening. Beaverhead County License Plate Deadline Approaches

Two days remain for Beaverhead county motorists to obtain 1941 license plates before the March 1 deadline. Law enforcement will arrest on sight any cars on public roads without the new plates after the deadline. Treasurer Bertie Mathews says sales are about 40 behind last year's pace.

Three Beaverhead Men Aim for Navy Band

Frank Kurtz Don Wheat and Buz Herman from Beaverhead county pursue Navy band careers. Kurtz passed Salt Lake mental and physical tests and awaits Butte exams. Wheat and Herman also tested in Salt Lake and proceed to Washington for music tests. If successful they undergo medical detention in Norfolk before study in Washington and Navy band assignment aboard a battleship after 18 months training. Enlistment spans six years.

Four Beaverhead youths enlist in U S Navy

Alan Tait John W Sinclair William B Stefanie all 17 and Robert T Melton 18 applied last week through the navy recruiting office located in room 200 of the post office building open the first and third Mondays and Tuesdays of each month. Recruiting officer in charge is L G Short of Butte.

Funeral set for Bert Orr Sr 62 at Masonic Hall

Funeral services for Bert Orr Sr. 62 who died Monday at his ranch east of Dillon will be held tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. in the Masonic hall with Rev. W. G. Lewis of St. James Episcopal Church officiating. Born April 17, 1878 in Beaverhead County, he was a longtime livestock businessman and a member of multiple local organizations. Survivors include two sons Bert Jr. and Byron of Dillon, a daughter Edith Thibodeau of Buhl Idaho, three brothers, four grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Interment will be in Mountain View cemetery.

Conscripts to Be Feted This Evening in Beaverhead County

The February quota of Beaverhead County draftees, 25 men, will be entertained at a banquet sponsored by Rotary and Kiwanis clubs this evening. Rotarian George Gosman and Kiwanian Dave Williams handle arrangements. The men entrain tomorrow to Missoula for induction. March quota is ten men with nine whites and one colored. next call March 24.

Pool for Small Wool Clips to Be Formed Here

Farmers with small bands of sheep are invited to a Dillon meeting to form a cooperative wool marketing pool for smaller clips. Harold F. Hollands of Montana State College will discuss cooperative marketing and pool organization. Information on Montana wool pools will be available. The session occurs in the county courthouse courtroom.

Mrs N Kunie of Argenta Dies at 85

Nettie Kunie 85 died Friday night at the home of her son in law and daughter Mr and Mrs Ray Sabin of Argenta. Born July 10 1855 in New York state she lived in Beaverhead county 12 years. Survived by a son in Canada and five grandchildren Ben Verne Cliff Velma Shorten and Mabel Johnson all of Argenta. Interment in Joliet Montana family plot.

Prophetic Snow Forecast From Moldenhauer Visits North Dakota

Weather forecaster Henry Moldenhauer, visiting Dickenson and tied to a service with clients in 17 states, predicts heavy snow in the Midwest. Students Tested for Tuberculosis at Beaverhead High

Starting yesterday at 8 30 the Beaverhead county high school began free Mantoux TB tests for students to identify reactors. Funds from the Dillo Shakespeare club and Christmas seal sales added over 450 dollars for health work. Tests will also be available to Normal college and Lima high school students, with about 550 expected to participate.

University Women Meet Monday Evening

Genevieve Albertson, vice president of the American Association of University Women, presided at the meeting at the Earnest Orr residence. Evelyn Rimel, president, spoke on the discovery and colonization of Latin America and the lives of national heroes. Mrs. T. E. Gilbert arranged with the college for Stefan Bardas concert next Thursday and read a juvenile delinquency study for Beaverhead County. A nominating committee of Mrs. S. E. Davis, Ruth Smith, and M. Minger was named. A fellowship report by Mrs. Margaret Hollensteiner was presented. next meeting set for March 24 at Miss Jean Bishop’s home.

G. M. Hall of Whitehall spent last week in Dillon conducting his monthly inspection of the beacon lights, checking their operation and safety.

Equalization Board Sets 1941 Livestock Cash Values

The state board of equalization sent county assessors schedules for 1941 livestock assessments. Cattle values rise by five dollars, sheep by fifty cents to one dollar, work horses and mules drop five dollars, purebred horses and jacks stay the same, and unbroken range horses remain unchanged. The 1941 schedules continue the new valuation approach begun last year.

Dillon Woman Featured in Montana History Series

A copyright feature titled It Happened in Montana drawn by James Masterson of Miles City highlights Sarah Parthena Howard of Dillon in a history sketch. Howard, born November 23 1849 in Stevenson county New Jersey, traveled to Colorado in 1860 and Bannack in 1862. She recalls dancing with the desperado Henry Plummer as a young girl and describes him as handsome with his hat on.
