Flames Razed Home Built by Veteran

World War II veteran Earl Phillips watched Saturday night as his newly completed home burned, water supply limitations hindering firefighting efforts. Coach Carl A. Ross leads Beaverhead County High School to Billings for the southern regional tournament after St Peters withdraws over an ineligible player, sending the Beavers straight to the state Class B bid and facing St Ignatius.

Former Local Man Lenox Dies in Portland Hospital

James Patrick Lenox. 58, formerly of Dillon, died February 19 in a Portland hospital after a lingering illness. Born March 17, 1879, in St. Joseph Missouri, he was a veteran of the Spanish American War, enlisting from Dillon and serving until the end. Survived by widow, a mother, George H. Lenox of Dillon, five sisters Celia Montgomery Adelaide Knapp Dillon Margaret Hendern Naomi Poland of Battle and Helen Williams of Helena, and many nieces and nephews.

Local Paper Changes Hands in Dillon

Albert and Elmer Erickson of Helena assumed charge of the Tribune Publishing plant on Monday after purchasing from the F. E. Foote estate. They will publish the Dillon Tribune and Dillon Daily Messenger and operate the Tribune store. Albert Erickson is an ex assistant editor of Montana Education. Elmer is a long time union printer.

Normal replaces old electric equipment at Montana State Normal

Training school pupils plan the term’s first public evening program with school orchestra numbers and acts. Normal college students will sing vocal solos to support the basketball fund and a memorial. The Montana State Normal College board authorized transferring 4000 dollars from the interest fund to the construction fund to replace antiquated equipment at a cost of 1940 dollars with payment after July 1, claiming annual maintenance savings of 700 dollars.

Radio Interference Topic At Dillon Rotary Meeting

Roy L. Hoffstetter of the Montana Power Co spoke to the Dillon Rotary on radio static, describing how noise levels vary with population and electrical usage. He warned that cheap appliances can ruin many radios, and noted decibel measures and future prospects of radio with visuals.

Close city league games highlight Tuesday night action

Westwood, Coast-to-Coasts and Eliels led a slate of tight city league hoops last Tuesday. The Pups fell to Westwoods in a close opener as scoring droughts hurt the Pups with Chouinard and Riordan top scoring for the losers. Gosman's Drugstore Cowboys dropped a close game to Coast-to-Coast after two overtimes with Miller tying late, then Coast-to-Coast pulling away.

Dillon Praised As Game's Host In Zone Title Victory

Montana State College Bobcats secured a 56 37 win over Utah U basketeers to claim the zone title. Dillon drew praise from Butte fans for staging the game and promoting the event with a 24 hour prep window and a packed Normal gym. Dillon Gun Club Opens Its New Season With Shoot

The Dillon Gun club opened its new season with a trapshoot at the fair grounds. Dr E G Free led 97x100 and Ted Renfro shot 49x50. New shooters tried out amid high wind and the club expects its largest membership yet as plans for the state shoot June 4 5 6 take shape. The L D S Relief Society hosted a handkerchief shower for Mrs J C Jeppson who is leaving soon.

Meeting of Hunters Set for Friday Elk Talk

Hunters and ranchers will meet Friday night at 8 in the city hall council rooms to discuss securing elk from the Yellowstone park herd. Lindley Phillips of the Beaverhead Sportsmen's association called the gathering. Elk are already moved to Anaconda and Butte areas, with protections planned for at least three years before an open season.

Nellie Merrick, Normal college class of 1925 and University of Washington alumna, is listed as a co author of Typewriting Behavior a 1937 five hundred page book. She directs personal typing in Tacoma public schools and serves as a Carnegie Foundation research assistant. Sheep Creek Rancher A J Lounsbury Dies in California

A. J. Lounsbury, longtime Sheep Creek rancher from Beaverhead County, died last Wednesday in Pomona California where he spent winters. His body was moved to Dillon for burial beside his wife in Mountain View cemetery. Surviving are a son Dan and two daughters.

May Queen Candidates Named at Normal College

The Montana State Normal College reports five May Queen candidates Thelma Bartlett Dorothy Blackburn Emma Hughes Edith Nelson and Elena Shepcevich were selected in a preliminary vote The final election will occur in about two weeks with the May Fete set for May 14 featuring Toyland as the theme and participation from the training school high school and Normal College. Mrs Jennie E Nash formerly of Dillon died Jan 19 in Portland following her son Francis Nashs death She is survived by daughter Mrs Clara Hetlesater and son Dr G W Nash Interment was in Portland.
